Fidonet worked much in the same manner over phone lines back in the early days of wide area computing.

@ReddmanDGZ that's long before they could read traffic on the lines. It is a simple thing to determine what sort of information is being transferred via a telephone line. Gone are the days of the public BBS.

If they "shut the internet off" it is through compliance by the various telephone and isp companies. The only free communication still in existence is short-wave radio. Everything else is controlled by a corporation who is, in turn, controlled by the government through compliance.

@mhaneline sure, and directed wifi on a local level. My idea would be to get friends and neighbors to set up a node based network via wifi repeaters. Sure they can listen in, but as long as we stay in their power limitations, we are a legitimate LAN. running different services over that lan, well, that's another story. Needless to say it wouldn't be like the internet we use right now, it would be more of a community based information sharing system.

@ReddmanDGZ It's good to think outside the box, but you might as well set up a bluetooth network for all the range a wifi network is going to give you. At that point, it would be more effective to walk your removable hard drive up and down the street, or let people borrow a USB drive. I'm not trollin' just sayin.. They've got us over a barrel because we've let it happen. Whatever comes is coming because we allowed it.
