If S is followed by a consonant in Spanish there is always an E in front of it (espanol, estado, estudiante, etc.). The only Spanish words that start with S have a vowel after the S (sol, senorita, si, etc.). Thus Hispanics that are new to English have trouble getting used to "S-consonant" instead of "E-S-consonant."
