The stories in the Bible may well have been based on true events, but they were certainly exaggerated.

I had a near death experience, I rationally knew my brain was playing tricks on me and not for a moment did I think of anything religious.
I was convinced it was the end, I simply felt relaxed and I was letting myself go, I didn't panic, and not for one second did I think about god, gods or Mr Jesus.
When I came out of the situation a few days later I was relieved of being still alive.
One thing I do find amusing is how their argument is incredibly short-sighted. The smug assumption is that is must be entirely due to the brain being flooded with DMT and that the experience is entirely physical hallucination they fail to prose the concept that DMT may be necessary for the physical brain to perceive what is going on in the spirit body.

Nobody really knows... You can't prove nor disprove that God is real. What matters most is how you live your life and how you treat others, hopefully with respect and dignity.

There was a scientist that did a study and came to find out people of all ages from all religons have met "the light" aka god. Also there was a 7 yr old christian girl who had a NDE and said she met some family in heaven..and she met two girls waiting to be REBORN.

@amcas1000 Scientists, hence Atheists (some who tag around behind like younger siblings, mimicking behavior without understanding context), believe in the conservation of mass/energy, & even the conservation of information (which survived the “black hole wars” so is still relevant), but don’t include a conservation of consciousness law. Information as raw data is passionately protected by science, but if the data were absorbed or digested by anything short of a black hole, they believe it lost?
@amcas1000 I think the issue is, many don’t believe the mind has any real existence. They don’t believe its matter… subtle or otherwise, so conservation of mass doesn’t apply. Same goes for conservation of energy, but it seems they imply data protected by conservation of information must also be protected by one of the other conservative laws as well, so information is only protected if it is held in a material or energetic matrix. To them, mind is not a thing or stuff, only an epiphenomenon.

Well, as far as NDE's go. Hindus see visions from the Hindu pantheon, christians see Jesus or other prophets, and Muslims see things from the Islamic faith. This totally destroys the idea of a specific afterlife for everyone, or the idea that this is evidence for an afterlife.

allot of people who have NDE's likely just start with the fact that the experience leads them to believe in an "afterlife" or a "god" & "goddess".
I don't necessarily see how it proves re legion (religion). its most likely a conversion from thinking nothing happens upon death to perhaps something or a glimpse into a semblance of an afterlife.

We have plenty of evidence on how oxygen deprivation affects the brain- we can even simulate the exact effects by stimulating various parts of the brain (also similar to what LSD does, as well).
quite interesting, yet NDE's and folks who have gone completely brain dead (no activity) still experience consciousness.. which appears to be a level above what you were describing, perhaps an even more vivid "glimpse" of life/ experience beyond death, so to speak.

Dannion Brinkley had no brain activity for 28 minutes. you'd think that = a blank nothingness for nearly a half hour.

I had an NDE in a local hospital several years ago. I saw nothing at all. It was like being under anesthesia, just gone, then suddenly back.
It did have a huge psychological effect that continues even now. I don't fear death but I do fear dying without having really lived. Pinning yourself in with so many petty fears that you live a meager unexplored, unexperienced life really should make you fear death. Being true to yourself, living your real life, turns that fear into productive energy.
my mother (a Christian -- not bible thumping, but definitely not someone ready to convert to atheism/agnosticism) had what you may call a "near-death experience" (she had encephalitis that completely debilitated her and she felt, as she was getting well, like she was "dying") and she said that she just didn't remember anything.
Could NDE's be a result from the pineal gland in the brain excreting large amounts of the drug, DMT (which scientists like Dr. Rick Straussman believe causes one to dream)?

The body has a way of preparing itself like a defense mechanism.
I think thats what a near death experience is about...so if you nearly die your mind will be preparing to shut down but your body is just about fit enough to pull through and keep you alive.
Consider the people who lose faith in their gods when a predictable traumatic event happens to them. They know some horrible event is coming and they pray for help. The horrible event happens despite this, so they come to the conclusion that there are no magical entities watching over them or listening to their prayers.
One can just as easily say, "How can a god do that to me?" as "I survived, therefore there is a god".
Uh..ok...so the astronauts are lying...and religious people are telling the truth? They didn't go intot he centrifuge to "prove" anything about near death expereinces, they went in for flight training, and this was a side effect of that. They have ZERO reason to lie about it. Deep ones have common features (life review, sense of time distortion etc.), and they generally change the personality of the experiencer. None of this can currently be recreated in a lab, and there is currently no satisfactory physiological explanation for an NDE.

@vwwarrior the astronauts in G-LOC nor the variety of people who've experienced the NDE's are lying, the shared symptoms of G-LOC and NDE does not make either group of persons a liar, rather shows comparative conditions can lead to similar experiences. yet, there are qualities that are unique to NDE's and G-LOC. and people who experience an NDE often times are affected by the experience and report what happened, even if they are not religiously dogmatic and indoctrinated

I haven't believed in God for a long time, and last year I got really sick and almost died. Guess what? I still don't believe in any God. There was no supernatural encounter. The only thing that happened was that I lost consciousness and almost went into a coma.

I had a near death experience, I rationally knew my brain was playing tricks on me and not for a moment did I think of anything religious.
I was convinced it was the end, I simply felt relaxed and I was letting myself go, I didn't panic, and not for one second did I think about god, gods or Mr Jesus.
When I came out of the situation a few days later I was relieved of being still alive.

@amcas1000 I think the issue is, many don’t believe the mind has any real existence. They don’t believe its matter… subtle or otherwise, so conservation of mass doesn’t apply. Same goes for conservation of energy, but it seems they imply data protected by conservation of information must also be protected by one of the other conservative laws as well, so information is only protected if it is held in a material or energetic matrix. To them, mind is not a thing or stuff, only an epiphenomenon.

allot of people who have NDE's likely just start with the fact that the experience leads them to believe in an "afterlife" or a "god" & "goddess".
I don't necessarily see how it proves re legion (religion). its most likely a conversion from thinking nothing happens upon death to perhaps something or a glimpse into a semblance of an afterlife.
any religious conversions are more likely to be whats predominant in the culture

We have plenty of evidence on how oxygen deprivation affects the brain- we can even simulate the exact effects by stimulating various parts of the brain (also similar to what LSD does, as well).

quite interesting, yet NDE's and folks who have gone completely brain dead (no activity) still experience consciousness.. which appears to be a level above what you were describing, perhaps an even more vivid "glimpse" of life/ experience beyond death, so to speak.

and as for killing yourself.. one probably wouldn't experience the pleasurable "going through the tunnel of light" until they decide to choose to accept it, as has been reported by Dr. Ken Ring in his study of NDE's (included those who attempted suicide)

@amcas1000 because it goes against their stringent ardent beliefs. Christians think there going to be in heaven worshipping Jesus and Atheists think there going to be in an eternal abyss of blankness and nothingness, so NDE's tend to neutralize those dogmas and fully fledged assumptions

Dannion Brinkley had no brain activity for 28 minutes. you'd think that = a blank nothingness for nearly a half hour.
yet he had a life review and interacted with allot of beings and activities. he went from being an asshole & atheist to someone with a converted knowledge of what happens beyond death and compassion

My experience with the Big D in no way altered my lack of belief in gods. I didn't believe then, don't believe now. There's nothing on 'the other side'. There is no other side. Live your real life, be your real self, while you can. There ain't no second chance.

I had an NDE in a local hospital several years ago. I saw nothing at all. It was like being under anesthesia, just gone, then suddenly back.
It did have a huge psychological effect that continues even now. I don't fear death but I do fear dying without having really lived. Pinning yourself in with so many petty fears that you live a meager unexplored, unexperienced life really should make you fear death. Being true to yourself, living your real life, turns that fear into productive energy.

my mother (a Christian -- not bible thumping, but definitely not someone ready to convert to atheism/agnosticism) had what you may call a "near-death experience" (she had encephalitis that completely debilitated her and she felt, as she was getting well, like she was "dying") and she said that she just didn't remember anything.

Could NDE's be a result from the pineal gland in the brain excreting large amounts of the drug, DMT (which scientists like Dr. Rick Straussman believe causes one to dream)?
I don't mean to draw attention from the video, because I love watching it, too, but if anyone is interested, watch DMT: The Spirit Molecule. That documentary, in which Straussman is actually interviewed, can tell you a lot more than I can.

The body has a way of preparing itself like a defense mechanism.
I think thats what a near death experience is about...so if you nearly die your mind will be preparing to shut down but your body is just about fit enough to pull through and keep you alive.

Consider the people who lose faith in their gods when a predictable traumatic event happens to them. They know some horrible event is coming and they pray for help. The horrible event happens despite this, so they come to the conclusion that there are no magical entities watching over them or listening to their prayers.
One can just as easily say, "How can a god do that to me?" as "I survived, therefore there is a god".

Uh..ok...so the astronauts are lying...and religious people are telling the truth? They didn't go intot he centrifuge to "prove" anything about near death expereinces, they went in for flight training, and this was a side effect of that. They have ZERO reason to lie about it. Religious people on the other hand, have EVERY reason to lie about it. It gets them attention from other believers, helps convince others, and makes them feel better about suspending their logic.

@vwwarrior The "astronauts" did not have near death experiences. some of them had experiences similar to an OBE. An NDE is something very specific, which includes an OBE. Deep ones have common features (life review, sense of time distortion etc.), and they generally change the personality of the experiencer. None of this can currently be recreated in a lab, and there is currently no satisfactory physiological explanation for an NDE.

@vwwarrior the astronauts in G-LOC nor the variety of people who've experienced the NDE's are lying, the shared symptoms of G-LOC and NDE does not make either group of persons a liar, rather shows comparative conditions can lead to similar experiences. yet, there are qualities that are unique to NDE's and G-LOC. and people who experience an NDE often times are affected by the experience and report what happened, even if they are not religiously dogmatic and indoctrinated

Did you know that you can "create" a near death experience in a lab? Yes you can...you mess with the equilibrium of the brain by using g forces in a physical human type centrifuge..and 30% of people report having a "near death experience" from it.
Don't get it twisted, these experiences are ALL brain chemistry.

I haven't believed in God for a long time, and last year I got really sick and almost died. Guess what? I still don't believe in any God. There was no supernatural encounter. The only thing that happened was that I lost consciousness and almost went into a coma.

This guy calling the show is trying to say that pretty much every atheist who goes through something like that ends up becoming a believer afterwards, and I'm living proof that that's not the case.
But even if he was right, people changing their beliefs doesn't make God any more real. Unless they can demonstrate the existence of a god, they're not believing in one for a good reason.
