good the south africans give them hell those cubans were sneaky fuckers always trying to do the same to other countrys what they did to their own, that is turn them into shitholes like cuba!
@SuperMauricioromero there were many different claims . this here seems to be most accurate. a long read but worth it. (remove the smilies) htt :) p://ww :) w.acig.org/artman/publish/article_184.shtml
My fathers brother flew mig 21 in Angola, 2 mig 21's were lost to dogfight with mirage and a Cuban Mig 23 scored a partial score against a mirage later in the war. most aircrafts lost on both sides were either due to surface to air missiles or accidents, but, it was mostly a war fought on the groung. Later in the war the SAA lost superiority due to BVR capabilities of Mig 23 and arms embargo. RIP to all the deads.
Ironically, the success of SADF against the enemy probably cost them the war. The amount of money and resources Russia spent in the Angola and Afghan war was a big factor in ending Communist Russia and resulting in the fall of the Berlin wall. The result? No more support for South Africa from America and Brittain. Berlin wall falls 19 Aug 89 - Nelson Mandela freed 2 Feb 90. The end of Apartheid. That's what ended Apartheid not some Cuban in a Mig.
Most SAAF aircraft was lost to ground fire. Especially SAM missiles. Impalas were they biggest victims of these due to their ground support role although a number of Mirages got hit. The others were Pumas and Allouettes. I am not aware of to many aircraft lost to enemy aircraft. Definitely not Cuban, East German, Russian or Angolan pilots. The SADF used captured enemy equipment as target practise deep into the 1990 and 2000. Even under the new South African government.
No it is not true that many F1's were shot down by the MIG23's. You can search the web for documented evidence and very few mirages were shot down. More MIGS hit the dust but in truth the air-to-air combat was little, and sorties were usually dominated by the SAAF.
This brings back a lot of memories. I did my military Service in the SAAF in 1973. Was based at AFS Durban. I remember 19 Squadron ( Pumas) and 5 Squadron ( Impalas) November - December 1976 was brilliant up at the Ondangwa Air Base.

The Arms Embargo....what a joke.
Lugmag001 1 year ago
@SuperMauricioromero The SAAF shot several Migs down. The South African Air Force MIrage F1's were lethal.
At the time the SAAF did not pussyfoot with the enemy.
