The movie is a fusion of 2 of the Earthsea cycle books with references to a 3rd. It does not follow any particular story-line of the Earthsea series but makes ALOT of references to different elements of it: Such as Cob, Tehrru, Ahren, Sparrohawk's boat, his scar, the tombs of Atuan and his association with Tenar...
But all-in-all it is just a slight glimps, it wasn't a great movie IMO compared to other studio Ghibli films, it was a good attempt at an hommage to a very complex book series.
I did think the plot was a bit confusing, which you didn't touch on, not the plot itself, but the way it was executed was not smooth enough to be clear. good review. ^.^
dude, ALL Ghilbli films are 'hard to follow'. That's what makes them awesome. I had to watch Spirited Away 3 times to fully 'get it'. Tehrru's song is based on a famous Japanese poem about life and loss and environmentalism. the official english dub is being released in July. in the credits, there is actually a caption which says "inspired by Hyao Miyazaki's.... (I forget) which explains away any of his film's 'references'.
I agree that some things were inconsistent, but I think I have come up with some reasons why characters acted the way they did.
Auren, I assume kills his father because he was possessed by his dark side, which happens during other times.
Therru hates Auren because she was almost killed by usagi and auren called his bluff, making it look like he didn't care about her. She says that she hates people who don't value life.
I still agree that the movie leaves the viewers (at least me) with questions.
At best, the movie is loosely based on the plot in the original Ursular LeGuin book, namely, the third in her trilogy. The book is much more fulfilling. The movie was slow and tedious in places. The device of introducing Cob's underling as a main character in the interactions between Arren and Ged was a nod towards the lighthearted influence Miyazaki Snr. It would have been better had the plot been more faithful to LeGuin's storyline rather than messing with it.
I read Wizard from the Earth Sea and that was bout Ged (aka Sparrowhawk) summoning a demon beast thing that was hunting him down, is that in the movie, or is it based on the third book?
I did notice a similarity between both Sparrowhwak's and Ashitaka's headgear.
Basically this was Goro's attempt to make a movie that holds up to high standards to his father's.
I did like the movie not as much as Hayo's previous movies. I wonder what the movie would have looked like without Goro. Too bad Hayao's dream project had been taken away.

Although, Terru's initial animosity is explained because, while saving her, Arren mentioned something about not caring about life, while later on she explains she believes life is precious. I thought this idea was integral to the plot and accounted for Arren's change in character. But don't quote me, only seen the film twice.

I think Therrus behaior of being mean and harsh after being rescued is pretty much explained by her charecter if you read the books. For this movie to make sense it seems that one has to read the books for the full enjoyment.
It was clear that this was not a recreation of any of the books. Watch it as a story all it's own. I was surprised how much they added from the books but there are different types of book movies, ones recreating the books and ones which are their own stories they created with the characters. This is the second. This is not book 4 but a replacement of book 4. Think of it similar to the alternative ending in movies.

In itallian its pronounced "Gibly," but Miyazaki decided to use it for his studio name, he wasnt aware of this. I watched an interview with him explaining all of this.

Regarding Therru character, her first reaction is somehow exagerated, but actually in the movie she makes some remarks that emphasise her repulsion towards those who don't apreciate life. And I thought also that Arren's motivations for killing his father are basically left aside. And this is one big problem with The Tales..

Interesting review. I have been following this film for awhile now and as a North American fan who is chomping at the bit to see Tales from Earthsea, its nice to hear a review on the film and get some good info on the Japanese dvd releases. I don't think I can wait for this to be released in the US, I might just have to import this.

While I disagree with you on some of your opinions, this video was incredibility insightful. Thanks a lot for sharing. I feel like I understand the film a little better.
Oh and I love the 'emo father son antics' line. It was really funny how you delivered it. Basically, you rock at life.

And something else I consider relevant for the mixed appreciation of this anime is that the main ideas of the Earthsea books are western ones, not jappanese, and this thing is reflected also in the movie.

Well, adam, I think that the song is the essence of this movie, and is where it supposed to be.
Regarding Therru character, her first reaction is somehow exagerated, but actually in the movie she makes some remarks that emphasise her repulsion towards those who don't apreciate life. And I thought also that Arren's motivations for killing his father are basically left aside. And this is one big problem with The Tales..

The World Wide Web consortium is the biggest waste of time and effort on Internet and does nothing but force older web sites to become non compliant and create overly strict rules of HTML content that no one can adhere to.

Interesting review. I have been following this film for awhile now and as a North American fan who is chomping at the bit to see Tales from Earthsea, its nice to hear a review on the film and get some good info on the Japanese dvd releases. I don't think I can wait for this to be released in the US, I might just have to import this.
