Awesome! I'm a beginner and just starting this dance, so your vid gives me something to study (for the first step at least, all the rest of mine are different).
That's an amazingly well done Seann Triubhas!! I absolutely LOVE your Leap Step: you demonstrate excellent control in that step, which is, I think, what the Seann Triubhas is all about. :) Superb!
I'm a highland dancer from Scotland in Premier Adults. The dancers that I see from America and Canada dance very differently from us. Oh, I'm called Fiona and I'm on my brother's account.
Hello there I have been continuously watching your performance...You are a beautiful dancer..One of the best i have ever seen technically and presentation wise. ( What is your name?.I have the same kilt red & white Menzies..My name is Connie Doglio I live in Perth Western Australia but was born in Dundee Scotland and attained rhe Scottish Championship and World at Cowal Highland Games..pls respond
Holy Crap your good!! LOL yes i'm entering the belfast championships too n they will be hard. I'm premier dancer so if you could give me any advice on how to keep my energy levels high throughout the dance please...... thanx
im a dancer too, im in intermediant, and its hard enuf the championships in belfast are in april and im nervouss .. pleasee get back to me on that :) xx
its been along time since i have done any highland dancing but this song and dance reminds me of when i was younger and i'm sure it was called the highland lilt ( i danced from when i was 4 until i was 14 ) so i might be wrong im 30 now and it seems along time ago lol x
This dance is called the Seann Triubhas and the tune the piper is playing is called Whistle ower the lave o't' ...we do have a dance called the Lilt though, but it's quite different! lol
I did HD 50 yrs ago. When did it become standard for the females to plaster their hair back and wear a "donut" on the back of their heads?
The Military inspired HD costume is already unfeminine. Why do we Scots force our beautiful women to dance in mens attire?
Isn't it time to "a-dress" this problem? I danced in a kilt too. When we Scots see a kilt it 'registers' as male attire - even though others see it as a skirt.
Want to mention, this dance celebrates the lifting of the ban against Highland garb. Somebody correct me here if I'm off, but the name means "without trousers". The beginning of the dance is slow and mournful, reflecting Highland Scotland after the '45 devastations. Wearing the kilt was a death sentence and was part of the dismantling of the Clan system. The tempo changes to reflect the joy when the ban was lifted and men could go 'without trousers'. But, many Highlanders fled during the ban.
I am Highland Dance illiterate so forgive me cause I don't know what they are called but those air-split-jump things were amazing!!! It looks like you are gonna freeze there and stay in the air. We have something like that in Irish dance but, does it kill your knees at all?
sarahjane117; It doesn't hurt your knees at all until 40 yrs later - when they give out from over use :-). I'm glad to see an Irish dancer visiting the HD videos. I've been wandering around the ID parts of YT lately. I'm in culture shock over the changes lately. I assume it's the River Dance influence. Anyway, I feel like Rip Van Winkle
Yeah it does have a lot to do with all the dance shows, I wish that some of the stuff would change back cause sometimes I feel that its a little too much quantity over quality (eg. kicking or leaping higher but getting off beat). If you go to my page I have some favorites of dancing in the 80's and earlier which show amazing rythms.
sarahjane117; Wow, I think I've met a kindred soul. I've left some comments on ID videos criticizing the changes in Irish competitive dance. "Kicking and leaping" are the exact words I used too. Amazingly, people have responded saying 'well - how can you tell who the best dancers are if they don't leap and kick the highest?' My answer like yours is 'skill, restraint and quality'. I will vist your channel.
I partially agree with you. I'm a premier level highland dancer and a world championship qualifying irish dancer--just to preface.
I think Irish dance has gone WAY too far with the glitz of it. I always appreciate the very traditionally inspired "look" of highland dancer. However, the best Irish dancers in the world right now are the ones that can do all the kicking and leaping and do it phenomenally well with good rhythm. Choreographically, I think Irish dance is doing just fine.
highirish; I disagree about the best Irsih dancers being the ones who can kick and leap. It's not about gymnastics, it's about doing the dance steps according to form.
ID and HD are classic dance forms - like Classic ballet or Japanese Kyoto. The steps, height of a leg thrust, angle of a foot, hands, etc - are all predetermined. The real challenge is sticking to the tradition when you are a 12 yr old, have leg muscles that can 'spring' like a fox terrier, and you want to "let 'er rip". :-)
highirish; On the other hand, I do like that ID is evolving . It proves that it's alive - like a language evolves. The difference between the traditional ID and the Michael Flatley influenced school is so marked that perhaps it's time for the two types to have different names with different standards of execution.
How the H Fling would look if the dancers kicked like they were Can Can dancers? There's a YTer who has choreographed the HD steps to contemp. music. Love it - but it's not HD :-)
I'm just a begginer at highland dancing I've been doing it for 4 weeks and I'v just got the first step down!! You're really good! Are you intermediate or novice? (i'm on my brothers account. That's why it says josh!)
I like the Highland Laddie myself, and the dancing seen in the "Laddie/Lassie" scene of Grandpa's Magical Toys" (confirmed to be real Highland dancing by the creators themselves).
The warriors used to dance across swords and the people who cut their feet it was told would die in battle. Hence it was in the best interests not to cut the sole's of your feet.
I danced from 8-13 years old and i am now 41. watching these videos brought back such wonderful memories. I remembered the music and the steps. great job and keep dancing (beware the bung knees in later life though
you need to watch your arms, they need to be tighter on your hips. ^_^ good job, though. I have been dancing for nearly 10 years, and I am taking my teachers this year.
oh thats cool, ive always wanted to go to scotland, i was gonna go last year but i dislocated my knee, so i was off for a while. Are you going to the Victoria champs this year?
