Thanks for the video! I just had text instructions and it wasn't working out, so I just made two braids and twisted them together haha. Maybe next time I'll get it right~~
Thanks so much! I've been braiding it with 3 strands and pressing two 3 strands together for a wide challah. This is such a help! I hope there's a vid on how to do the round one.
Thank you so much - I am just in the middle of making one and realised I didnt know how to braid with 6 strands! Thank you for your clear instructions and the extra clever tip with the sesame seeds! Shalom!
Great for visual learners. Thank you so much for the video. It helped immensely. I am excited to try it. Please keep the videos coming. Shabbat Shalom.
That is so beautiful.....I was think about how you said that is was like hair wile I was cooking and so I decided to do my daughters hair like that and it turned out perfect just like the bread
@loisen I'm glad you like the video! You don't have to use a stone. Any loaf pan or flat cookie sheet will do. The reason I use a stone is that the likelihood of the bottom burning is lower than with a tray. It can be room temp when you put the bread on it to rise the second time and then just place it in the oven. Good luck!
Hi Maya...I just want to tell you that I found your video a few years ago. I make challah a few times a year, and I always come back to your demo to remind myself how to make the braid. My dad's family is Jewish, but none of family did this kind of thing when I was growing up. Thanks for your helpful, clear instructions, which have allowed me to connect to a piece of my heritage!
This was a fantastic, if not THE BEST, video tutorial on how to do a 6 braid Challah!! My very first challah bread came out looking perfect . . thanks to your video!
I am working on this but have a question about the stone. Do you oil the pizza stone?? Because it specifically says not to put oil on it, to sprinkle with cornstarch. So I am confused what to do. Can someone help me with this?
@dodibatzion In the video I put the challot on oiled stones. I always oil my baking stones. I've done this for over fifteen years and I haven't had a problem.
@MayaSophia thanks, I have had a hard time finding out if you can. But how do you oil them, or with what? I did sprinkle my stone with corn starch as they suggest on the box, and the crust did come out fine. What is the difference with the oil (do you use olive oil?)
@dodibatzion I've used both olive oil and vegetable oil in the past. I simply pour a little bit of whatever oil I'm using on the stone and then wipe it around with a paper towel so the entire stone is covered in a sheen of oil. That's it! :D
finally some1 who actually does a 6 braid the right way i just watch some other video and the ladys braid was horrible..i worked at a jewish bakery for years and we made 80 big and 4 small challahs a day and we braided it exactl like she did but at like 5 times the speed lol it fun tho
Thank you so much for demystifying the challah braid. I ran back and forth from my dough ropes to your video, and produced my prettiest loaf ever. Shabbat shalom!
Thankyou so much for our video, it has helped me quite a bit in my hallah making! I ESPECIALLY loved the tip at 5:10 with regards to the uniform application of sesame seeds. It makes the loaves turn out beautifully! THANKS again!! :)
you make it look so easy!!! i majored in baking & pastry arts when i was in college, & had to do the six-stranded challah. thanks for teaching me how to do it again, because i honestly forgot how to do it.
hi how do you make your braid strands soo uniform mine come out in thin-thick and everything in between i want my loafs to look more uniform and such. any help would be great! thanks for the video i sorta have it down now!
Hi! When you make the "ropes", if you can make them as uniform as possible, then the entire loaf should turn out fine. I will say that sometimes even my loaves can differ from time to time. We are human beings, not machines, right? It mostly takes practice to find out what works for you. I think I just had really good luck the day we shot this video. ;)
@patisserie1...your assertion of Maya's recipe is incorrect. Perhaps you have bad yeast. I have used Maya's recipe for 3 years with perfect results. Her recipe is among the best ever..as I have people constantly begging me to reveal the secrets of *my*/Maya's recipe.
We love your video, Maya! (my sweet Girlies & I) We used it (and your recipe) about two years ago and loved it. Then our lives turned upside down for over a year. Now we are wanting to make Challah again. Thank you sooo much! Hugs, Robin

Thanks! This is a great video, I have made Challah in Culinary School. I need to practice at home, thanks for taking the time to show the braiding the challah as well as demostrating the various ways to decorate the Challah.

Well Maya, I tried your recipe for ' Cinnamon Raisen Challah ' and all I can say is that your recipe Sucks! I've tried it twice and on both occasions the dough never ever doubled it just stood there like a stone. The only useful tool I can use from the above video is the braiding other than that there isn't anything useful about your recipes. Maybe, you should tweak & revise the recipe. I would advise anyone in this forum to don't bother wasting precious ingredients on this crappy recipe.
I'm sorry your attempts at using my recipe didn't work for you. It's interesting to me because numerous other individuals have used the very same recipe and had what they said were great results. I'm glad the braiding portion of the video was helpful.
@Lagolop It is just a fricking cinnamon bread. Take responsibility for my failure? It doesn't appears that Maya was overly offended. I suggest that you try the recipe maybe you might be more successful at it than me. At least, I had the guts to try it, and I call it as is. But some how, I have a feeling that you won't even attempt Maya's recipe. You're probably in this forum for entertainment. So there!
@patisserie1 I couldn't bake anything if my life depended on it but I'm a damn good taster. I came across this vid in a round about way but I do remember my grand mother and mother baking this kind of bread and it was incredibly good :)
Your comment to the channel was rude and I responded in kind. Why did you bother to post it publicly? Why not to the owner privately? What did you have to gain? And no, this is NOT just cinnamon bread. It takes skill to create; it's not a basic bread recipe.
@Lagolop Never baked a thing, yet you know that it takes skills to create cinnamon bread, and it's not a basic bread recipe. For your lack of information, the recipe is pretty basic. There is no mystery about cinnamon bread. One doesn't need any acquired skills or apprenticeship training to make this bread. This bread doesn't require a Levain, so its very Basic in my humble opinion.
@patisserie1 Apparently u do not read well either. I said ... this is not a basic bread recipe. It's not cinnamon bread you idiot, its a CHALLAH. Got it. No wonder it didn't work for you, you only listen to YOUR OWN SELF ....
@kdroush You know, I really fogot about this clip until I saw your comment, and I had a good laugh. Did you try this recipe? If you had any success with it; let me know. I'm betting, you would have a bread that is as hard as a rock if you follow this recipe. Already Tested & Proven by me.
Thank you for the video. Would you have a recipe for yeast free Challah? How about showing how to take Challah? Also a loaf that may look like is 6 buns in one?
Oops...I typed too soon...I the link to your website...thank you so much for showing us how to bring in Shabbat so beautifully! :) G-d Bless You & Your Family!
Try letting the dough rest after you pound it down and divide it. Let it rest again after you first stretch out the ropes. Once it recovers and softens - about five minutes - then finish making your ropes and start braiding.
I have a question please. why every time when I want to braid my challah dough as I put the straps(ropes) on the desktop so all my dough (ropes) shrink shortening and hard to work with bands. It's drives me crazy. I used high gluten flour and replacing it with other types but it happened to me again!!!! Where is the problem? i will be happy if some one can help me with that problem !!!
Thanks so much! I have a diagram, and I did it, but it was hard and confusing. Also, it didn't look as nice. You made it much easier. Can't wait to do it.
Thanks Maya for taking the time to pass on the secret to making wonderfully braided challah bread. My grandma used to make this for special occasions. I will try it. You are very nice for sharing. Good luck to you!
To all those that left comments or questions, I haven't been on YouTube for months. I've tried to send you answers and the recipe for the challah today. Thanks for being so patient.
You can achieve a similar effect by making two three-strand braids, one half the size of the other. Place the smaller braid on top of the large one and tuck the ends under - it looks like a six-strand braid and bakes up the same, but there's less to remember.
Challah is an egg bread that is traditionally used at Shabbat (Friday night to Sat night). It is delicious...one can buy one at a bakery, however it is wonderful to make your own, not only for the taste, but the wonderful smell in your home as it is baking...It is pronounced CHallah...the CH comes from your throat. Enjoy.
Wow! I've been trying to figure out how to do that forever. I would love a better challah recipe - would you share yours? Also, I tried to get to your blog at wordpress and saw that it was a "protected blog" - how do we access it? I want to make your round challot for the chagim this year and surprise my parents!
Thank you for posting this. The step-by-step visual helps immensely. This is coming from someone who has difficulty braiding her own hair. I love challah, and now mine are so much more beautiful. Thanks!
I'm a baker at heart and never knew how to make challah bread until I watched your video. You went nice and slow in your demonstration and explained each step beautiful. Thank you! The bread turned out perfect and I look forward to braiding another one, just to keep in practice. Would love to learn other baking techniques from you!
I tried going to your blog for the recipes but Wordpress is saying it's a protected blog and I must login. Even after logging in with my Wordpress account it's still saying it's protected. Can't view the blog no matter what. *pout*
If you're worried about having family content on there and keeping your privacy safe (sensible to do these days!), could you please make a second (different) blog posting the recipes?

Thanks so much! I have a diagram, and I did it, but it was hard and confusing. Also, it didn't look as nice. You made it much easier. Can't wait to do it.

Maya can I have the recipe for challah? Please
graciefisher 2 years ago
Thanks Maya for taking the time to pass on the secret to making wonderfully braided challah bread. My grandma used to make this for special occasions. I will try it. You are very nice for sharing. Good luck to you!

Please post or share your recipe for challah - I notice your blog has been made private and I did not get a chance to write it down! Thank you!

Very nicely done. Informative and pleasant.

You can achieve a similar effect by making two three-strand braids, one half the size of the other. Place the smaller braid on top of the large one and tuck the ends under - it looks like a six-strand braid and bakes up the same, but there's less to remember.

That came out beautifully.

what exactly is challah?

Thanks!

Hi Maya,
I love your braiding, but would like to ask for the recipe. The one I found and used didn't turn out great.
Thanks!

Your challah are beautiful and your dough is fabulous. Would you consider posting your recipe? Kasher Pesach Sameach!

I'm a baker at heart and never knew how to make challah bread until I watched your video. You went nice and slow in your demonstration and explained each step beautiful. Thank you! The bread turned out perfect and I look forward to braiding another one, just to keep in practice. Would love to learn other baking techniques from you!

Excellent video, and so easy to follow!
