I think this song is a bit like Dylan / Hendrix with 'All Along the Watchtower' - the great writer wrote it and it was performed better by the latter. I think Springsteen is great and share his interest in blue-collar and folk music, but I wasn't interested by this song until I heard Cash make it more radio-friendly. Perhaps I'm shallow, but Johnny seemed to put in far more melody that made it a fine song.
@nicedave29 dylan/hendrix? what the fuck are you smoking? i want some. cash is great, no argument's there....but the original version of this from the nebraska album is flawless. flawless. cash can't hold a candle.sober up.
@jdmccallen28 Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I play the song live occasionally and everyone who's talked to me about it expresses the same opinion that they prefer the Cash version. Each to their own; at least it's all good, real music that is written and performed with passion.

@nicedave29 absolutely untrue, sir. this song is far better off without the backing band or the ridiculous harmonies. those things only distract from a great song
@nicedave29 Have you heard this song from the album Nebraska? It is incredible!! There will never be a better version of this song than that album version. I love Cash . . . one of the greatest song writers and singers our good green earth will ever see . . . and he does a great version of this song . . . but it ain't as good as the version on Nebraska . . . which is, by the way, a perfect album.
Nobody does it better than Bruce on Nebraska album.Bruce's rendition is stark adn haunting whereas Cash's as good as it may be is slightly polished which in turn leads to song losing its edge
@vladamih Cash has a master storyteller voice and style. Bruce was good, Cash was master full. Bruce's inarticulate lyrical style does not lend itself to this song. Cash owned this. In my opinion!!
@justin1502001 WOW!!! I am a Conservative American who believes in God and Jesus as my saviour!!! I do not agree with 90+% of Bruce's political views, and I love Cash too... However, Bruce is a major voice of Americana for the last 25 years since the "Born In The USA" album... He is the blue collar worker, and I would likely debate his politics till the end, but this guy is NOT OVERRATED!!!
@elvisapresley68 politically, you & i are about as different as day& night. but i completely agree - springsteen is not overrated . not in the slightest. he is one of the few 'famous' performers that still & continues to make 'real' music.
@jdmccallen28 Thanks for the comment! I have been fortunate enough to see Bruce in concert 7 times over the years... Each time was an amazing experience with lifelong CLOSE friends! We may have different political view and such, but that's what makes America great. Like Cash, Bruce is a storyteller and one of the tops of all time. As an entertainer, I would put him a close 2nd All Time to Elvis.
yes, what a great movie and how evil viggo mortensen characters frank. but i miss this song in the end credits(: it would have given the movie the final touch and feeling..
And this live rendition is amazing in its own right.Such a heartfelt performance
