I use my rice cooker to steam veggies, actually (usually frozen), so for me it's not a unitasker. It works surprisingly well, although I recommend anyone trying it to be very careful, as it's not the purpose the machine was made for.
Alton's right about households who cook loads of rice everyday. A Rice Cooker makes it easier. We cook so much rice at my place, I finally broke down and bought a basic one that did what it was supposed to do, cook rice and not say filet a steak with it's fancy buttons.
rice cookers can also cook stews, congees, gruels, and even oatmeats. There are also the before mentioned bread, and more. then again, since's i'm asian(chinese) i cook rice often, and it's what i eat 80% of my times. thus my NEED for a rice cooker. I'm so sorry alton, i love your show and you, but i must break your rule this one time.
red snapper and yellow tail are the shit! if you go to a sushi restaurant and you see a Sake roll, get it, its probably one of the healthiest rolls but its pronounced Shock-ay even though its spelled the same and the drink Sake. and try to stay away from spicey rolls b/c they usually conatin mayo in the mixture. asians are the longest living human b/c of the way they eat, we like to americanize everything hence why our country is more obese.
wrong, you dont need salt and sugar with the vinegar for the rice. just use the rice vinegar alone, i used to be a sushi chef and you dont need that stuff. and you're just adding sodium and sugar to a healthy meal making it unhealthy. plus you're already using soy sauce which constains a double amount of your DV of soduim.
this is one of the only times i've outright disagreed with AB. rice cookers aren't uni-taskers; you can also steam veggies, seafood, dumplings, etc., use it for stews/curries, and even bake bread in them, among other things.
How many times do people not listen to AB. He did state that if you go through a lot of rice, then it is a must have and should have fuzzy logic. I do believe in his book about kitchen tools he stated that going through a lot of rice would be at least cooking rice once or twice a week.
remember what AB says. If you cook rice more than twice a week its a must have but if you dont its not really worth the cost. He has stated that in previous episodes and in his gear for the kitchen book.
I used my rice cooker to be quite a multitasker actually XD! I make rice, congee, instant noodles, I even found a recipe where you can use it bake bread XD!
true only if your eating it from your own plate. When taking from the centre or common plate, use the back as to not get your spit on all the other pieces. However most of the time people will ask for a master set as to avoid all this confusion
How did this idiot get his own show? His recipes are Horrible and he doesnt know the first bit about food. Stop acting like such a jackass on tv and either make some good food or get the hell off the TV you idiot Alton!!
BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH !! It is someones bedtime i think. I am a nobody.... hahahahaha angry little girl has a rotten infestation of aids... dont worry you will soon die
Yes you are intitled to your opinion but you can state stuff alot nicer then you did....if you were polite maybe so many people would not have gotten upset at you...
I love Alton Brown. He is by far my favorite Food Network personality. My Mom doesn't like him much because she thinks he's silly. I think his shows are both entertaining and very informative. Rock on Alton.
@MalkavianHand : Silly's not just good, silly's entertaining and thought-provoking, atleast to a degree. Which in this case adds up to a more receptive audience (if you've got the right audience, ofcourse), and a more educational experience.
A.B. keeps things light and fast, but if you watch the show, the pace is slightly intense, which helps draw viewers back into the show. 'Good Eats' is a show you do have to pay attention to, without going too overboard.
my family cooked a whole chicken in a rice cooker and its really good. so its not really a unitasker. also my brother took a rice cooker to collage so he can boil ramen whenever hes hungry :)
uhh, i would believe if a sushi place didn't know about the wasabi between the fish and rice, it can't be called a sushi place (at least i wouldn't go there)
reply to kaiseryuki15 (does it go under the names anymore when you reply???)...oh and many of us eat sushi the 'incorrect' way. the whole lets mix up as much wasabi we can take into your soy sauce isn't 'correct' (but i still do it) -_-"
I agree with you 110%. I love it with a slice of Ginger, and that hot green spicy stuff with soy sauce.
ones with cream cheese are awesome. And fish eggs. Wow, im surprised I said "Fish eggs" and "awesome" in the same paragraph. I tried it once on vaction and im hooked.
Seeing this, I didn't know that im supposed to eat the ginger AFTER, not at the same time. Oh well, I still can't eat with chop sticks :(
Agreed, even if the closest to raw fish sushi I've come is the tuna-from-a-pouch version the Chinese buffet offers on weekends. The prospect of food poisoning, etc. is still a bit much for me to go whole hog.
I use my rice cooker to steam veggies, actually (usually frozen), so for me it's not a unitasker. It works surprisingly well, although I recommend anyone trying it to be very careful, as it's not the purpose the machine was made for.

It's not that hard. You can find out how to make rice anywhere, including on the package for the rice, and instructions for rice cookers.
