I have to disagree. Not with the quality of your work, but with the idea that this is a better design than the one used in the film. This design wouldn't have held up on the big screen. It looks like a TV show ship design and I don't understand why the nacelles were redesigned, but not the actual saucer and hull. I still think the film design is as good as you can get with the basic elements.
thanks to everyone for all the positive feedback If I get less busy I'll reopen the model and maybe do a high res render for you to see. Something thats not so flat lit ande maybe make something that looks a little more dramatic ( don't worry it won't be pulling out of dock or in a phaser fight it'll be something else.)
This ship looks more like the real Enterprise than the motion picture model, much better looking and it just looks right for the show. Too bad we didn't get to see this series Phase 2 produced because it would have been a great series I think.. Back to the ship, it looks great and with just the right tweaks to stay updated and no look totally changed .
The Museum of Television and Radio showed a ST:TNG episode in their screening room, and even that show, the ship shots looked terrible when shown on a movie screen.
I do like how it's between TOS and STTMP designs and actually the volumes look more realistic to the re-fit story line. The lines and dimensions of the Motion Picture refit ship don't compare well to the TOS. Never completely comfortable with that issue. It really turned out looking like they just re-built the entire ship, not just refitted. I love you work!
@bjbearorl I agree. I wish they could have taken the money spent on redesigning the ship from scratch and spent it on punching up ST:TMP's script, but I guess that's not how it works.
There is another USS Enterprise that never made it to the screen, one I would have like to see, the NX-1701-A the stepping stone to the design of the next generation ships and originally was to be the NCC-1701-A before they canned it and moved back to reusing the then current movie model.
Good work. I'm definitely geeking out. My only nit to pick is that the ship name font looks more like the (inaccurate) AMT model than the original TV lettering.
I still like the Franz Josef font myself.
...Would it be workable to upload a higher-rez video? I'd love to see the detail compared to the images & blueprints I've seen.
@cadror26 actually the model they had was still being built they had an Enterprise model and a dry dock Niether were used once Robert Wise stepped on board prodution.
@cadror26 From what I've read, when the decision was made to go with a movie instead of a T.V. series they built a new Enterprise bring it up to the detail level needed for a theatrical release. A model made just for T.V. doesn't have to be as detailed as one for the movies.
And yes, I have heard that Brice Price built the "Phase II" model. This would make sense as he was working or the Project UFO T.V. series at the time.
@cadror26 Additionally, the TV model wasn't designed with a movie in mind. you don't need so much detail on television in the 1970's. Movies had much higher resolution and so they needed a more detailed model.
That is VERY interesting! It sparks a memory I haven't thought of in years - possibly decades. For a couple of years before the 1979 movie, there were posters and full page ads on the backs of Marvel comics advertising for it. And I distinctly recall one of those ads showed what was supposed to be the new Enterprise. And it looked much more like THIS than the version in the actual movie! It must have been the "Phase II" Enterprise they were using before they had the final design nailed down!
Very nice. I like the Phase II Constitution along with all other versions. To me the 2009 Enterprise is almost a realisation of the Phase II Enterprise.
Beautiful work, thanks for going to all the trouble to show us that ship as it might have been. Looks great.

Way better than the JJ Abrams design. Great job, by the way.

Nice job! I don't see much difference than the TMP one, though.

If they already had the model for the show, why not have just used it for the first movie instead?

As I understand it, Brick Price actually built this version as a miniature. It still exists.

IMHO 1701-A ( and the refit in ST: TMP ) are the best looking enterprises.
