  • Your 5 beat measures at the beginning are pretty much coming off as 6

  • I really don't know why people get ugly here. They are opinions we offer........and opinions are like "a--holes" we all got them so relax. Holding folders is NOT a preference it is because you don't know the music. Well rehearsed and top notch choirs follow their DIRECTOR and not look at the music. It is crap to say the folders help the sound go forward. It fact it is hilarious that one would suggest that it is helpful. If that is the case lets wear those cone dog collars.

  • The piano rhythm at the beginning feels off, but maybe it's just because I'm used to a different interpretation. Most of the other versions I've listened to have done it differently too. I love this piece though! :) Nice dynamics.

  • Well done..........BUT........come on you guys should have done this without music! STRETCH yourselves. I know that university choirs don't meet all that often but when I sang at Cal State Fullerton we memorized everything. When I sang in HS it was a HUGE no, no to sing with Music but we met every day. Soloist has a tremolo and unfortunately out of tune. I like their over all sound. I also feel the director followed the composer's tempo and performed this wonderful piece as written.

  • Actually there were only a hand full of us actually using music the rest of us weren't. Notice how only 5-6 people actually turn the page. The director thought that it would look weird if some of us had music and some of us didn't.

  • @RayMinkle Heres my impression of you "The way I do things is awesome. Meh meh meh meh meh! Sing it how I want you to! When I did this I was SOOOO awesome and you are only meh"

Suck a dick, they did good.

  • @RayMinkle Chanticleer performs with music. So what's the problem? The folder, if held right, will actually help augment the volume by helping the sound go forward, rather than down. It seems to me that having folders is more of a personal preference.

  • @RayMinkle Why does memorization equal quality? It doesn't. It's a quantitative way to feel accomplished, but does not ensure a quality or sophisticated performance.

  • Great piece of music, also a great piano part!!

  • The soloist wasn't good.

  • omg our school choir sang this song at a music competition today and won!!

this is really a jubilant song! ^w^

  • The Girls Choir of Harlem also sang this song, i was apart of it and i absolutly loved it!!!

  • I think this is well done -- the sound quality of the recording isn't the best, but it sounds like this choir deserves some merit. I feel the energy inherent in the piece on this clip.

  • if you can sing this correctly, your choir is physically a good choir, because it made me want to pass out by pg 27 haha.

  • rofl

  • It's hated because it's difficult. It is, I will admit, but once you overcome that you appreciate the versatility of the song. Sure, it's somewhat cheesey. 2:47 is where it progressively gets more interesting. I don't know. It's hard to justify why I love it, but it's AMAZING.

  • haha my choir took state with this song last year. i love it...killed my voice though.

  • this song kills me,its one of the alabama allstate songs this year it so egfdjjgnfjng,it makes me hate singing soprano

  • LOL

  • wats so funny?

  • I had to sing this tonight and we hated it.

  • My high school choir sang this back in 1970. What great memories of a phenomenal song. A truly jubilant song, indeed. Thanks!

  • I think all of the above comments are malarky. I will begin with the fact that I too do not enjoy this song either. Secondly, who cares if your choir sang it better? We all have are weaknesses. Thirdly, look at the words. What do they mean? You are asking your audience to listen to YOUR song.

  • Take the meaning of the poetry and use it to shape your phrasing. Dello Joio, God bless his soul, is a genious. He made these words come out with such color and vivacity. The rythms do nothing but help acheive the spirit of the words.

RIP Mr. Dello Joio. Thank you for this piece.

To the choir above, great job!

  • ummm that was awful my choir sang it last year and I thought that we didn't sound that good singing it until now wow

this choirs voices are to heavy you don't have to try to out sing each other bring it down some notches and it would be alot better

  • This is an awful lot better than my women's honor chorus' trainwreck of this piece. Still don't like the piece at all, but this choir's doing a very good job with it.

  • i sang this at all-state choir, and i completely agree JohnsonzKid... dello joio's just a little overenthusiastic.

  • we sang this for UIL contest soph. year (may 07) it was my fave song of the year, i love it!! i cant wait to get back into choir again this year, i really missed not doing it last year

  • we´ll sing this song in august the 22nd and 23rd (C.U.T.) with an orchestra. when we begun the rehearsal it was a "not jubilant song at all".. but now I like it a litle more. I hope we´ll give a nice concert.. Sebastián from Tucuman, Argentina.

  • UCI?

  • i sang this in a concert last night.

there is NOTHING jubilant about this song.

    really....

it's like, listen to a jubilant song.

    or i'll kill you.

  • Ya know... That's a surprisingly accurate interpretation... Hehehe.

  • I really don't like the way the "La" is said.

It should be spoken like: Lah instead of Luh. By making it an ah sound, it becomes much easier to sing.

  • I think that LAH would sound really harsh regardless of whether things are easier to sing one way I think that the way that sounds better is the better route to take.

  • Do you think so? Not to argue, but I don't really imagine it would be. It wouldn't be as if each lah would be punched. If the ah sound was simply made to be taller it would be much cleaner.

In addition, it would most likely be much more pristine and articulate.

However, I have sung this song before, and I do know how hard it can be to make the numerous consonances and vowels clear.

  • This was definitely a different interpretation of this song. The song, as well, is long and difficult. It was pretty good for a college choir recorded on a camera. There's always the perception live and recorded. Though some others think this interpretation is absolutely repulsive, it is all in the director's hands and the singers to bring the piece of life.

  • Yeah, our teacher didn't inspire us to sing this song very well. I agree that we do not do it justice. We aren't very motivated to do well at this point because we have been mindlessly drilling this song and others and learning them wrong. :(

  • Way to underachieve on this wonderful song. The tempo is off from how it was intended to be sung. Poor ending continents, some vowels were too bright, for example in lightning. The weird jump to "o to berulers of life" was stupid. For most of the song only half of the words were there, for example "lea" and "clou", pure laziness. If you are not going to sing the song right, don't sing it, and definitely don't put it on youtube.

  • Ouch man ouch....

  • Despite all my criticism (which I still stand by) this is the best performance of this song on youtube.

  • Are you guys a high school or college chorus??

  • College.

  • Nice
