Mr trupaktarmac: I'm not sure what my age has to do with the truth; I recently drove a friends 750il with the same motor and I was just unimpressed with the power, 0-60 in about 7.6ish and 15 mpg, if I remember correctly.

Yes, but no one is carrying around graphs with them. When someone asks about an engine, the quick figure is Nm, HP simply isn't shit. For example, the 24 Liter Maybach engine from a Tiger tank has less than 700 HP. Some idiot would thing an engine in a sports car might be more powerful (or close to it). Problem is the 24 Liter engines turns out 1850 Nm! If you know the Nm, you KNOW the power of the engine you're talking about.

Horsepower is used to define the peak of available power at a certain RPM. (T*R)/2525 = Horsepower. It's simply a given measure for overall performance. If it's high, you know it's probably either a torque monster or a killer revver. You can probably guess it makes more torque than anything if it's a big 5.7L.

Yes, you are probably annoyed. It shows. It is not ALL ABOUT Nm, but if you throw only one figure out there, it should be Nm (ft/lbs) and not HP. Nm (ft/lbs) is the true measure of the work an engine can produce as physicist would recognize. HP is a number based on Nm (ft/lbs) that basically says how many times the engine can repear a SMALL amount of work during a period of time. U.S. is one of few countries dumb enough to still talk "HP" instead of true power of Nm (ft/lbs).

HP is an almost irrelevant measurement of an engine - stupid U.S. is really the only ones dumb enough to still talk in terms of HP. TORQUE (or Nm as Europeans measure) is the measure of the engine's power. HP means very little. TWO engines can have the same HP, but one of them have twice the torque (and be twice as powerful). If two engines have the same torque, they are the same powerful.

I'm assuming you are being sarcastic.  If this is the case, you are correct. HP is key for race cars at high end where speed, not power, are important. At any speed someone would drive a motoring car as the one shown in the video, torque is what matters as to performance, not HP (which is largely a fictional number calculated from torque).

Actually they get pretty decent gas mileage, my 1995 bmw e38 750il gets 20mpg highway and can maintain that at high speeds. It only uses about 33% more fuel then my 4 cyl integra, but it's 3 times the engine and 3 times the car so it's not bad.
