Don't cut into a live tree if you don't have to, you tool. You've just opened the tree to insects and fungi while only harvesting the thin paper bark you could've gotten with your fingers also. People like you are the reason why we can't go anywhere for bushcraft...
Try to learn bow drill or hand drill to avoid so many bad reactions from people to your fire lighting. I, in difference to them, understood the message of your video was supposed to be mainly the fire management and its use to cook something rather than actually lighting the fire in a heroic manner. As modern man has degenerated into such a state that most city folks would burn themselves to death if attempting a fire, your video does a good job for the totally inexperienced.
@ArtisanTony What the hell is the big difference between using matches or a lighter versus firesteel, flint and steel (steel and marcasite are not that easy to find in nature) or magnesium fire strikers? To me all these are the same kind of man-made trinkets with one common weaknesses-if you forget or lose them, you are screwed. So in my opinion, the really "manly" ways of lighting fires are most techniques employing friction, where you can find all necessary materials directly in the forest.
@sutrar Matches are not dependable. You can do whatever you want. I have been in the wilderness in the rain and you will not start a friction fire if the material is wet but with a good fire steel you can. Don't get your panties in a wod. It's my opinion.
you shouldn't cut that deep into the tree you should just peel it off the tree cause it doesn't harm the tree and cause you cut to deep then you got the wet green bits which aren't highly flammable and it is never bushcraft if you have to use matches and a tin opener
The clown did'nt put the match out, and put it down right next to the box of matches. There was no need to cut into the tree like that. This fool needs to take a lesson from the Silverfox.
dude, that sucked i thought you didnt have matches what kind of shit is this? i could make a video on how to wipe my ass without toilet paper and it would be a better video than this lol
Really stupid... you should leave that tree alone and start using your hair for "fueling" the fire.... (it looks more flammable) and use sand (or dirt) instead of water to extinguish the fire, (you should drink the water instead) pfff.....
Why on earth would you kill a healthy birch for a tiny piece of bark? Dang! Folks, there are TONS of dead birch lying all over. Find a few and just grab the bark as it peels back naturally as the tree dries out. DON'T kill trees needlessly!
although you are right in saying he should have used dead or the bark that sheds naturally what he did wont kill the tree,If i had hair like his i would use that as hair makes excellent tinder
there is nothing wrong to start a fire with matches or lighter, especially as a beginner exercise. ray mears do use lighter, go look for his videos.
firesteel had been stereotypically associated with bushcraft. a lots of videos use firesteel simply to make is more bushcraft like. come to think about it, firesteel is so man made. and it's not easy to use, you need special tinder, cotton ball...
All good except you missed two major things for fire. A good can of petrol and a chainsaw to make the fire bigger, im sure you could carry that along with your can opener, tins of beans and matches.
I have to say this video is terrible for bushcraft. You cut an innocent and living tree for bark when you could have found some from the dead wood nearby.
If you want good bushcraft vids watch the AZ Bushcraft.
hi their edmund great video and it realy helps me when i camp out did you happend to get that method from ray mears outdoor survival hand book i use exactly the same way !
You were in the Scouts, right? Just because that is the method Scouts use to collect birch bark, ripping it off the tree leaving bare wood. It peels off, you even did so yourself. Why cut the bark off? You'll open the tree up to possible infection, so the tree dies and isn't there for you to use in the future. Look after it and you'll ensure that you have good tinder in the future. Please, don't preach bad techniques to people.
If you are a Beginner at Bushcraft/Survival,think first do I need to Kill or destroy anything,or can it be found by looking a little harder?for instance, pine resin,or standing dead wood from spruce made into fuzz sticks then using a fire steel,or bow drill,as for tinder, scrapeings of birch bark from a piece of dead wood.?or just goto Trueways Survival,or at least watch Ray Mears on TV.
I can only re-iterate what everyone else has said.
But, I do want to ask is: how does a fire know whether it is a square one or not? And, is it possible to fool a round or irregular shaped one into thinking it is square so that baked beans may be more effectively cooked.
I think this video had some good points, but seriously, get your tinder from dead wood already. And maybe label the video as more about "fire building" with emphasis on the fact that you are not showing more primitive ways to get a coal.
Well... since tyou took with BEANS, MATCHES AND A CAN OPENER you could put paper or something else in your fire instead of killing a tree for fun that is living lots of years more than you.
I agree, this video is very uninformative, and shows you how to do the most damage possible. If he had just looked a little further he would have been able to find a dead birch branch where he could have easily peeled off the bark with his fingers.
no affence but i could of made this video when i was 8, really when i searched bushcraft for begginers i didnt want to see a can opener, a box of matches or the killing of trees, bushcraft is about respect for nature not ignorance
was this video a joke? Seriously. Who the fuck throws away their only drinking water on a fire? who kills birch trees by destroying the bark/ Don't you knwo a tree is only alive on the bark layer? It drinks breaths etc all from ONLY the bark layer.
You probably killed all the trees you hacked into. Secondly you coudl just as easily have taken the bark off that was already flaking off. NO one carries beans in the woods, ....
nobody would have matches..AND WHO WOULD HAVE A CAN OPENER?? you basically made a video of what a 6 year old would do if he wanted to "pretend" he was camping from the comfort of his own back yard, excpet you KILLED dads birch trees, and forgot to replace moms can opener after steakign a can of beans, then used a HOSE to put out the fire you made. This has ZERO to do with bushcraft. Youa re a smart kid though it seems you can learn, but you shoulda have known a little better.
@BadMuffler You should consider what the purpose of the video is. Most people today would not even know how to light a campfire with a flamethrower let alone cook anything on it. Beginners Bushcraft:
Step1: Find a perfectly healthy living tree
Step2: Kill it, removing bark you don't need to, don't worry about the spirit of bushcraft just go ahead and gouge out strips with your knife.
Step3: No need to practice bushcraft fire lighting just open a box of matches.
Step4: MMmhhhhh Beans yummy who needs to forage trap or hunt? Tesco's is around the corner.
Step5: (AND THE ONLY DESCENT THING YOU DID) eradicate all signs of your camp!! Leaving it as you found it.
