Why did he invent the left hand´trick? So he could fist Joey Jordison with the other hand while still blowing every new school speed demon out of the water.
why is it that the top comments are ALWAYS hating on travis barker. fuck off douche bag. they are both good drummers. yes technicaly buddy rich is better. more dynamics. but travis is in a TOTALY different style of music so stop comparing them they are both very good,
What a talent. Just amazing, but I think those drums are going to be the death of him. Looks like he comes close to catching a pain in his chest. Amazing drumming.
I have to agree with you all, this is wonderful. There is a huge set of drumming cliches. You know the kind of thing that will come next. He is the cliche breaker! You keep tuning in to this solo but you keep misreading what will happen next.
He never lost it, did he? It amazes me every time I see him play, whether it be an aged recording or something nearer the end of his life. Definitely one of the world's best drummers to date, and one of the coolest styles of soloing. :)
@TheAlecDangerProject - Always Zildjian (except once that I have seen in his later years he had a Ride by I think Sabian) -- 20' Ride, 16" Thin Crash, 16" Medium Thin Crash, 6 or 8" splash, 22" China -- the specific type/model varied, as he regularly had new cymbals, but this was his general set-up. Check out Zildjian's website, they used to have the set-up on there.
Based on an interview I saw a while back - Buddy's daughter (Kathy) said that when he finished this performance, he exited the stage to a waiting ambulance. (For those who don't know, he had a long history of heart isssues). Apparently he was experiencing some chest pains, etc.
@DJOTCUTS I believe on You tube there is an interview with his daughter (Cathy). I know he was having chest pains, but I dont know if it was an actual heart attack.
im a heavey metal fan but im trying to learn about swing not all metal fans dont like buddy rich i dont think i could do that with out years of practice
my school band teacher was friends with him. he told us a story that buddy was doing a drum solo and his bass drum started moving, so my teacher pushed it back in place. buddy was like "hey, do wanna be my roadie? ill fire the other guy right now..." my teacher was only 16....
Buddy had so little to work with and did so much and that's what make him so much better then Neil pert and all the others(ps fuck Travis barker that guy thinks flam taps on the snare is crazy hard!)
I'm sorry, Buddy is an amazing drummer and so is Travis along with all the other names that have been said... Until you can drum better than these guys then your argument is invalid...
What a joke these Travis Barker comments are. I suggest anyone who considers him to represent the pinnacle of his craft take a look at: Billy Cobham, Elvin Jones, Dave King (Bad Plus), Mark Guiliana, Chris Coleman, Rod Morgenstein, John Bonham, Carl Palmer, Phil Collins (Brand X in particular), Bill Bruford, Narada Michael Walden, Joe Morello, Dan Weiss ... well, really, I am just getting started. To say otherwise is like claiming Liberace was better than Vladimir Horowitz.
@TachyonDrums don't forget Mike Mangini, Dennis Chambers, Thomas Lang, Tony Royster Jnr., Neil Peart, Steve Gadd, Mike Portnoy, Simon Phillips....all drummers who have a rightful place in drumming history ahead of Travis Barker
@TachyonDrums travis barker is a modern punk drummer and he is fantastic, i think hes on par with some of the old drummers you oldies just think because its new its shit, its not
yes the older stuff tends to be better no one can beat bonham or moon but theyre still good
It's disturbing how Rolling Stone magazine rated Ringo Starr number 5 and Buddy Rich number 6 on the top 10 drummers of all time list. Buddy Rich should be number 1 and Ringo Starr shouldn't even be in the top 1,000
Buddy Rich is the drummer other drummers use to set their standards by. He's the man. There are some great drummers out there, but no one has reached the pinnacle of Buddy Rich yet.
@TheDjpwn3 yes i totally agree. look at wat he does at 2:35. sure there is no double bass underneath but for all intents and purposes dat was a blast beat :P
Am I missing something here??What the Fuck has Justin Bieber got to do with this?And..Travis Barker is a decent drummer but he is not in this league...Maybe Joey Jordison.....And definately Bonzo/Neil Peart
Anybody who would compare Buddy to anybody else is obviously oblivious to what it takes to get to the level of any of these pros. They're all great in their own way. Just enjoy them all and learn from them. Maybe someday you can say something as creative musically as they have.
I don't know how anyone can compare any good musician to another?... Each are amazing for different things as there is a millions of way to hit a one piece of a drum let alone a whole kit. They're all good just different.
i dont get why people are like "i was gonna go jam on my kit after i watch this vid. .. now my kit is on eBay.. : (" watching him play doesn't discourage me it inspires me it makes me want to play and get better

@dub1423 ....really? travis barker is TREMENDOUSLY over rated. look up some shannon lucas, ginger baker, neil fucking peart, blake richardson, chris adler. get appreciation for syncopation, polyrhythms, actual drumming not just keeping time and flashy fills in a bullshit washed up punk band we all love to remember.
@dub1423 I get where you're coming from 'cause when I started drumming years and years ago my granddad bought me a copy of 'Big Swing Face' and I would show him Travis Barker videos so I mean no offence to Barker when I say this... But, if any modern drummer can be compared to Buddy Rich I would personally say Thomas Pridgen. Sure, he's not as famous as Barker but his playing style echoes Rich's so much closer than Barker's. If you look at solos from all three I'm sure you'll see what I mean!
@dub1423 and this got 23 thumbs up ? LOL i could name about 30 drummers who would drum travis braker into a hole so deep he'de need a bull dozer to get out....and worse yet comparing him to buddy rich is like sacrelige...Umm Lets see Buddy, Krupa, Peart, Bonham, Lang, Bozzio, Moon, Baker, Roach, Belson urrrrrrr make than 50 drummers
@dub1423 Travis Barker is not at the summit of our time my friend, clearly youre not familiar with Mike Portnoy, Terry Bozzio, Neil Peart, Kenny Aronoff, Jason Bitner, Thomas Lang, Tommy Igoe and many more. Travis Barkers just fast and most people can cover his shit thats why most kids like him.
why the fuck is everyone dissing the rev, he's a good drummer, not the best but why disrespect one artist in order to praise another? (i understand when people say it about travis barker cause he really is overrated but the rev is dead, cut him some bloody slack.). buddy rich is one of the greatest of course.
@jamiedonnellyuk I agree with you man, America needs to stand up and become unified within ourselves and stop wasting american time and make good history with every breath we take! these negative fighting comments on youtube are just an example of out over all attitude that reflects on the whole world. Buddy Rich is GREAT!
Of the "new" drummers I like Tim Yeung best.
No one has the speed and tightness he has! Incredible speed, all he needs now is a Great band to play in!
Check "Jam Sessions Tim Yeung" on this site!
As the WORST drummer (in a famous band) I´d have to say Lars Ulrich
The sloppiest drummer ever, what happened after the 80´s? Drugs?
He manages to ruin such classics as "One" and "Master of Puppets" totally nowadays
Sisters of Mercys "Dr.Avalanche" has more soul than Ulrich ;-)

@dub1423 I get where you're coming from 'cause when I started drumming years and years ago my granddad bought me a copy of 'Big Swing Face' and I would show him Travis Barker videos so I mean no offence to Barker when I say this... But, if any modern drummer can be compared to Buddy Rich I would personally say Thomas Pridgen. Sure, he's not as famous as Barker but his playing style echoes Rich's so much closer than Barker's. If you look at solos from all three I'm sure you'll see what I mean!

@B3NGAG3
As of this day november 16, 2011 I can confidently say that travis barker has reached a level on par with the likes of peart and portnoy.
Dont confuse a difference in technique or style with a difference in skill. They are all masters.

@dub1423 why would they think he is radical
I dont belive that at all but I do belive he is 100 times better than any of these so called ledgends of today

travis barker is not even musical he hits the drums for the sake of making noise.
cadrino20978 2 months ago
@dub1423 "(he has developed all the same skills and tools as Buddy Rich)"?!?
are you nuts?
why don't we ask Travis himself about that statement and see what he says.
He's nowhere close to Buddy. The only guy who approaches Buddy is Vinnie Colaiuta.

why the fuck is everyone dissing the rev, he's a good drummer, not the best but why disrespect one artist in order to praise another? (i understand when people say it about travis barker cause he really is overrated but the rev is dead, cut him some bloody slack.). buddy rich is one of the greatest of course.

Why do people fight so much on videos of great musicians? Music's music, we all love it, let's just got on with it and appreciate all strands.
