On this date in 1963 {Feb. 16th} "South Street" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at No. 3 and spent 13 weeks in the Top 100
Ranked 47th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1963 chart
Was the last of three straight records by the Orlons to make Billboard's Top 10; started with "The Wah Watusi" {#2}, then "Don't Hung Up {#4}, and finally "South Street {#3}...
do you who played sax on the Orlons tunes. also have a suggestion(don't know if would work)
have someone who has conections set up a web sight just to answer questions about songs, musicians, groups etc. and maybe one for those of us who would love to have an autograph of someone in a video before they all pass away. iof the person doesn't want their life inturepted that way. ok but might be worth thinking about.
I'm thinking of my dad, and this, one of his favorite songs. It saved his life one night while he was doing dishes and dancing in the kitchen - lightning came flying through the window and instead of him, zapped the radio. That's a fact. Cheers.
ok i was born 68 way after this music was released however mum says when i was in my cot the only way i would sleep was to find the nearest oldies station on the radio and have it as background music in my room :-) hence now i am 43 years of age and i love this music . please keep the brilliant music coming your an absolute legend in my book as they say in the uk anything else just isn't cricket keep up the good work pal :-)
My favorite Orlons' recording. I turned 16 in the Spring of 1963 and just loved their music. Sadly, this genre of music was sent packing by the Fall of the same year when the Beatles, Stones and DC5 landed on the shores of America. Thanks Ron, for all the great music you post that always takes me back to my musical roots.
Thanks for posting this rocker. As the Greasegun gets closer to oblivion, he finds he spends more and more time on u tube reliving his youth through the music that is unique to his generation. I wish every young person today could have been with us hanging around the jukebox slamming back Coca Cola and pigging out on Ring Dings. Great days, sadly long gone.
I was in second or third grade when this record came out. It, along with "Da Da Ron Ron," stuck in my head for years and years before I heard them again. Those songs are as good now as when they were made.
the expression ''be hip'' was used in the ghettos back in the 1940s among jazz players - I believe hipster came along at that time but I'm not sure ''hippie'' was used back then
high school sophomore. played varsity football (northern ohio) and danced the livin' heck out of this tune after every game. i still love every chick that danced with me.
I had to go to the Crenshaw Macy's to find this single which I played with do the 81 and Wah-Wahtusi til I haf to replace them! I loved those 45's! oh yeah and wild one by Martha and her female Vandels aka The Vandellas!
@vicious426 Actually, this might be the first reference to "hippies," meaning something a little different than what it came to mean a few years later.
In Glendale, CA South Street ran parallel to Eleanor J. Toll Jr. High and stopped at Herbert Hoover High and back in the late 60's we were ALL get high!
'63 i was about 14ish, depeding on the time of the year this came out. I rememer it and I absolutely loved when it came on the little transistor radio i turned up the volume. I had gotten that radio for Christmas the year I was 12 and didn't I think I was just "too cool for school." Thanks for this post.
Malt shops. Man, I had almost forgotten. Today, people go to Starbucks with their frigging computers and text-messaging overpriced cell phones and just SIT THERE and don't even talk to anybody!
1963 was a bridge year from what rock'n roll had been to where it would go next in 1964 with the beatles, and the british invasion. I'm a good exsample. my true immursion into rock began with the beatles. yet all the music of 63, (and 62 as well) were still finding airtime on radio as well . so they too were an influence in rocks next period just as 60 and 61 were on 62 and 63. its fasinating to me how it's all interwoven. I probably hummed south street , as much as I want to hold your hand.
I *sort of *like this silly little song. But REALLY hate that stupid dancing graphic from 1:06-1:24, and that trash in the disco at 1:48. Did anyone tell you you have the touch of s--t.
Someone needs to "hit the showers." and get it clean.
Until the tragic accident that ended their operation, Philly's "Duck Boats" played this song full-blast while ferrying tourists past South Street landmarks like beloved Stooge Larry Fine's birthplace. Philly...it's the greatest!
My vote for best girl group ever! Wah Watusi, South Street, Don't Hang Up, and backup for other songs such as Mashed Potato Time by dee dee sharp- fantastic sound. This one might be my favorite-thanks for putting it on.
The first hit record I can think of that mentioned "hippies". The Dovells' "You Can't Sit Down", which came out just after this, also mentioned the word. Both the Orlons and the Dovells were from Philly and I think the hippies they referred to were a local Philly movement, more like the beatniks than like the later San Francisco hippie movement.
This song is a very happy song.
