i know some of the people in the 12 tribes in Oneonta, NY. They are a group that preys on the outcasts of society. Boycott their products and stores.

yeah.. the twelve tribes are bad news. they prey on lost heads at shows.. it's worth a trip inside their busses to see the intricate woodwork, but those people in there are spaced out. definitely a cult, read about it on wikipedia. And notice that their dancing is very apollonian, not the typical deadhead dionysian dance.. stay the hell away from them..

Twelve Tribes is a cult with bases across the world. They use mind control to abuse weak or desperate people that they use as slaves.

The children are beaten every day and don't go to school. They have no toys, no pets, no tv, ni internet, no telephone and don't have the right to kiss or to talk to each other, and no right to see the rest of the family outside the cult. the twelve tribes have some cool buses you can see on the video.. they will let you on and give you tea.. but my personal opinion is that every one of them I have met is a weirdo... and trust me I've met a bunch of them in order to say I tried to get to know them and just not have a knee jerk reaction..just some of the typical weirdness that fits into the dead scene...

This is a dangerous cult. I should know because these people ran a cafe in my town for a decade. This is how they try and get new recruits. They look all happy and peace loving but in reality they are not that at all.

@BitterrootJournal The TT are absolutely NOT a "dangerous cult". You may have lived in the same town as them for a decade, but you've clearly never spent time with them.

As someone who's been a TT guest on several occasions (once for a full week, talking, living, working with them), I can say with confidence that their children are happy and healthy, the adults are kind and sincere, and they're glad to open their homes to anyone with (respectful) questions or concerns.

They're safe to visit.

@ladyheather2010 This summer I lived in-community full-time for 3 months. I still maintain that the children are more psychologically healthy than most non-community kids I've ever met (and I guarantee these kids aren't "showcasing happiness"). Also, whatever your experience was, I (and some other long-term visitors) have had many VERY long, detailed, personal talks with others who were raised in the communities, and they're neither ignorant of why some have left, nor interested in leaving.

I know this video can be a little long, but it is unusual to see a group dancing and looking like "hippies" behind MSG in NYC. I enjoyed watching them and am a fan of any type of dancing.

I lived at the Twelve Tribes Community in NY for over a year and it is not a cult. These people are like 'real' christians. They live together, work together, dont watch TV, just live for God. Their doors are always open to guests, go visit, and you will say they are not a cult also.

Thank you Karma for ID this group. All I knew was that a friend and I were walking to see The Dead....and we stumbled across a group of people (hippie & folk like-not often seen on a NYC street) dancing to live music. I quickly took a video (as NYC folk are known to do) and moved on. @eabdesigns Just to point out, while Karma accurately ID'd this group as the TT, he's wrong about them being a cult.

I've read everything (good AND bad) that the internet has to say about them. But to get the truth, you really need to visit them in person.

They're good neighbors, generous hosts, patient friends and loving parents. There are no drugs, hidden corners, coercive tactics. The only danger I can see in them is that seeing their lives may persuade you that you need to change yours.

It's just difficult-- as someone who's baked bread with them, had soul-to-soul discussions with them, worked side by side in the cafe with them, slept in the same room, picked raspberries, gone for walks, danced, swam, cried and prayed with them-- to NOT want to defend them when you see them slandered in public.

Visiting them is the surest way to allay one's fears.
