Question-Why would someone who plan to buy a car that cost as much as a home let that car be a Hyundai? I mean, who wants to spend that much money on a car and still need to prove to ppl (even one they don't know) that the car is worth it. One made by freightliner would probably have less performance, and also be heavier. If you buy something from Aston Martin, you know it will be good because of how long they've been making supercars.
Luxury is also heritage such as a hundred years of involvement in motorsports, pioneering and consistency - things that Hyundai just doesn't have. People don't dream about owning a Hyundai and for good reasons, it's not all about gadgets, gizmos and the latest specs.
You know, I think people do not buy luxury car thinking which car has wooden desk in the rear etc, they buy a luxury car because they dreamed about it when they were kids. I dream about Mercedes and I study and work hard to own Mercedes one day, it is the way you show to yourself, you really made it. You may say I have some problems with myself, but all in all, I feel good in Mercedes and if I will have money one day I think I will buy myself Mercedes (the new one, otherwise I buy myself H) ...
I think it looks nice overall, but the prominent chrome grille and hood ornament look ugly and out of place on it in my opinion. It could use a long wheelbase version too.

In fact, one of the reasons that the Sonata is competitive on price is that is was engineered from the get go as a four cylinder line up only. That is the car platform. However, a huge business case in developing engines is to amortize the cost over many programs, as does Mercedes and Audi. The key point about Hyundai, Value.
@g37muflih Hyundai actually spent millions and millions of money and time building this engine that is specifically made for the Equus. So that is not necessarily true. And Some reasons that German competitors are so expensive is that its a big brand name for luxurious cars so they can make it that expensive.

Good review, and a really nice car! However, there's a flaw in your mustard analogy. In this segment, branding has A LOT to do with it. It's not the price, but the ability to buy what most people can't afford. Hyundai is about "the masses", not about exclusivity. Equus buyers are those concerned with how much they can get for their penny - like your interviewees. If you have to show a girl the toys in your car to get laid, you're missing the point. The key alone should be enough.

Believe it or not, this episode was shot in summer of 2009! Just the other day I saw a brand new one that someone just picked up from the dealer - looks like they are out there now!
At the LA Auto Show, Hyundai let folks get inside and experience the car. Sit, touch, press buttons, etc. BMW, Benz, Audi locked their car doors or displayed their cars behind glass displays. If a car company wanted my business, they'd have to let me do more than just "kick the tires".

@ScientistSoundSytem, I heard that Hyundai will designate separate technition for Equus only. Also, you don't HAVE to talk to them. Equus will give you the Ipad(is that what's called) which you can set up appintment for service then they will actually come to you, take the car, leave you with either Genesis or Equus as loaner, and bring the car back to you when it's done. You don't even HAVE to visit the dealer. Though I am no fan of Equus either.

They made him come up with a design so that the water pump would slowly break down and cause problems. How are you going to sell cars if none of them break down? He said that engineers today are capable of designing and building cars that will practically never break down (except for the natural wear and tear parts such as tires) but the auto makers purposely design them to break down over time (usually 4-5 year when the warranty expires) since they need to keep selling cars and replacement parts.

some actual achievement in car races where they can demonstrate the
performance of their cars to the world, if they want to construct and sell
their car as a premium brand. A real luxury car has to be recognized
not merely by its appearance but by the history of auto racing behind it.
Such are Aston Martin's cars or Bentley's ones.

guys simple mercedes has lots of engine choices for single car so the researching cost for each engine adds on the cost of the car. wherelse the hyundai has one engine choice. even that single engine choice is copied so there isn't any researching cost so the car is cheap

@g37muflih You are missing the point. Yes, there is a cost to engineering multiple engines into a car platform. In fact, one of the reasons that the Sonata is competitive on price is that is was engineered from the get go as a four cylinder line up only. That is the car platform. However, a huge business case in developing engines is to amortize the cost over many programs, as does Mercedes and Audi. The key point about Hyundai, Value.

@g37muflih Hyundai actually spent millions and millions of money and time building this engine that is specifically made for the Equus. So that is not necessarily true. And Some reasons that German competitors are so expensive is that its a big brand name for luxurious cars so they can make it that expensive.

Good review, and a really nice car! However, there's a flaw in your mustard analogy. In this segment, branding has A LOT to do with it. It's not the price, but the ability to buy what most people can't afford. Hyundai is about "the masses", not about exclusivity. Equus buyers are those concerned with how much they can get for their penny - like your interviewees. If you have to show a girl the toys in your car to get laid, you're missing the point. The key alone should be enough.

@otbway She was COMPLETELY shocked when I told her what kind of car it was. In fact, no one had any idea what it was when we turned up at that cruise in. Believe it or not, this episode was shot in summer of 2009! Just the other day I saw a brand new one that someone just picked up from the dealer - looks like they are out there now!

At the LA Auto Show, Hyundai let folks get inside and experience the car. Sit, touch, press buttons, etc. BMW, Benz, Audi locked their car doors or displayed their cars behind glass displays. If a car company wanted my business, they'd have to let me do more than just "kick the tires".

Its a nice car but I wouldn't feel safe taking it to Hyundai to get it serviced. Who would trust a Hyundai technician who usually works on sonatas and accents to fix a genesis? Mercedes has special technicians that work on maybachs so I hope Hyundai has special technicians as well!!

@ScientistSoundSytem, I heard that Hyundai will designate separate technition for Equus only. Also, you don't HAVE to talk to them. Equus will give you the Ipad(is that what's called) which you can set up appintment for service then they will actually come to you, take the car, leave you with either Genesis or Equus as loaner, and bring the car back to you when it's done. You don't even HAVE to visit the dealer. Though I am no fan of Equus either.

I have to take my lexus to the dealership, then they give me a 2010 loaner lexus with half a tank of gas. To me thats a lot since they lose money that way, so I dont mind going to them. So its impossible that Hyundai spends thousands to send guy to pick up your car just because you need a window fixed or an alignment!!

If you look around to the various message forums, it is known that Hyundai will extra mile and that means, you do NOT need to be at the dealer, to buy, and to get serviced. Yes, THEY will come to you. All you need to do is schedule the service by Ipad. When you buy the car, THEY will bring the car to you and explain about the car the first time.

@SpiaggiaVita mate for what ever reason it does break down, all vehicles made by any company is supposed to breakdown by 5 years. My grandfather worked for Ford Motors and he was an engineer. They made him come up with a design so that the water pump would slowly break down and cause problems. How are you going to sell cars if none of them break down? You need to mass produce more each year. thats business.

@AutoPilot69 Very good point! My automechanic teacher once said the same thing to our class when I was in highschool. He said that engineers today are capable of designing and building cars that will practically never break down (except for the natural wear and tear parts such as tires) but the auto makers purposely design them to break down over time (usually 4-5 year when the warranty expires) since they need to keep selling cars and replacement parts.
