I have to comment because its been irritating me. Your dog should always be on your right, not your left. ESPECIALLY if you are doing this in the tradition of horses. Horses must always be on your right hand side not your left. A left-handed lead horse is unpredictable.

Jeez...does anyone on here know how to teach a dog to heel? Use the Koehler method: the dog has no place to go but to your left. First off, in a dog show you have the leash in your RIGHT hand.

Hi Jim I am sorry to tell you that the way you are teaching the dog heeling is not really the right one. If you using food than the food should be in the left hand because like you have it you are training the dog to come in front of you to try to the food. You should make a lot of directions changes so the dog does not know where you go and will watch you more. Then the lead should not be short but long. this is a bored dog, walking nicely on a leash. The dog should be walked on a loose leash,not on a tight leash, because of opposition reflex, dog will pull. There is a difference between formal competition style heel and walking nicely on loose leash.

it's a method to start to teach heel, but in my experience, when a dog walks down the street it's far more complicated! and they won't take your treats

Funny. He says that heel means the dog is on your heels but shows how to walk in a circle with a neither motivated nor attention showing bored dog. Fucking great job, Jim! Let this one do people who having a bond to their dog and know what they do. In nearly every video you BEAR tries to run from you. I would think about it and watch some 'How To - Vids', maybe a 'How to bond with your dog' or 'How to understand bodylanguage'.

Guys please don't try this with your dogs there are much better ways.

Another so-called trainer using an already trained dog and the funny thing about this video is that the dog isn't even heeling!! I think can go to KFC, brought back some juicy chicken and used to have my dog walk in a circle..and it would look better than this guy and his dog.

why do you keep teaching a dog that is already trained! this might have been better if it was an untrained dog, that way we would probably relate or understand better and we would actually see if your tricks work. but so far i have been very unsuccesful with your lessons that are only one minute long.

I guess I really don't to say anything bad aboutthis video. The general public is more wide opened than I thought. Just a bit of info. Horses were mounted on the left because the roman soldiers were ALL right handed. Hence the sword was carried on the left. Same with dogs heeling on the left. Guns were carried and drawn from the right. All the left handed people at that time were people like Socrates, Aerostotal, etc.

This dog is not learning for several reasons, firstly he is holding a short, tight lead so the dog is not CHOOSING to heel, it is being forced to be there and therefore learning NOTHING. Secondly he rewards the dog at the end when it sits, so the dog learns sitting is good, but nothing about heeling. Rewards must be given the instant the dog is in the correct position, not after they have changed behaviors, they are not psychic, they don't magically understand unless the timing is right

First off, in horses, everything is done on your RIGHT not left. Also this guy should stand upright when teaching the heel and have something that gets the dog more motivated (meat, cheese wtv the dog REALLY loves) . Expert Village should really try to get some experienced ppl on here and maybe they could begin to restore their poor image a little.

alfa position will get your dog to respect you and listen when you give him a command, it's not magically gonna make your dog understand HUMAN, you have to show him what you want him to do and associate it with a command, once he gets it, he'll remember his alfa showed him what to do when he hears that command

this is all wrong, never lower yourself (physically) to a dogs level because a slouched posture shows weakness and shows your dog you are bowing to him. Germans respond to voice commands and body language not constant treats. put yourself in the alpha position and everything will fall into place

No offense but i would never train my dog like that. First of all, your voice doesn't seem too mean anything at all to him, because you talk to him ALL the time.

I use my voice as little as possible when i train my dog. That way he becomes really in tune with my body language instead.

When i teach heel i first teach the dog to sit in the exact right position by my side. Then I take a ministep and reward as soon as he follows. Then some more steps, until he heels for as long as i ask him to.

never saw the german military dog trainers croutched over the dogs head with a treat...this is dumb. Heel is done with a longer leash and the dog is corrected when it walks away from you,thus learning that beside you is good and away from you is undesired.

You don't treat the dog every time. If you do so, the dog will _only_ do what you ask when there is a treat. I only treat my dog once out of ten times now that she has learned the commands. This makes sure that the dog anticipates the treat and does what you ask in hopes that he/she will receive a treat.
