First destructive solar flare was recorded in 1859. Telegraph poles were on fire and telegraph network were down. After careful study, next event was already foreseen with 90% life wipe out but Scientists coded the actual date in Religious way to prevent people from panicking (late 19th century). @QuantumQuacks It's happened before, it happened in New York in 2003 and in Canada in 1989. I watched a lot of this stuff and I know a WHOLE bunch, I could answer questions all day. THIS IS PURE SCIENCE -.- . Our magnetic field has weakened a whole lot in these years, and we don't know when we will have a solar storm acctually 'hit' us. The solar storm may happen in 1,500 to 2,000 years, because that's when the magnetic field disappears. So I don't want to hear it.

@unoriginality1 That wont help. It won't matter if a device even has power turned on to it. If it is connected to the grid; it's gonna fry. The reason is because its not the power on the lines that does the damage- it's the amperage INDUCTED on the wires by the magnetic fluctuation around the lines. It's kinda complicated to explain, but if you want to research it further; search "electro-magnetic induction". It will fry anythng thats plugged in as well as a lot of electronics that arent.

@abahannin -- Depending on severity, ALL electric circuits could be affected, in many ways similiar to a nuclear-bomb-caused Electromagnetic Pulse. In the mid 1800s a big solar flare caused barbed-wire fences to become electrified causing fires. Delicate switches & circuits in everything from transformers to relays, generators & sensors and pumps -- the whole infrastructure could be seriously impacted, everything from communcation & transportation to manufacturing & food production/distribution.

If the engines off the plane stopped, its still possible that the plane can land because it glides with the winds. Planes with no engines have made succesful landings so jumping from a plane with parashoots would not be a good idea. Even tho the engines would be off, the plane would explode once it hit the ground and create massive damage to the area where it landed.
