  • Silverchair is doing so good!

  • hes changed so much

  • he never sings perfectly on live performance...wat a waste..the album is superb, but live shows all wrecked out...i miss the old silverchair...*sigh*

  • he had nerver fully recovered from laryingitis at this point by ATGD his voice was great

  • Why is it impossible to find their appearance on the Jay Leno show when he Daniel lost his voice? It seems to have disappeared yet every other live version under the sun still remains.

  • i have it :) it wasnt too bad. it just sounded grungy yet hoarse

  • it's back on youtube!

  • Wow. That was simply AWESOME!!!!

  • daniels new look is kinda like freddy mercury from queen lol

first time i heard this song... and lovin it

  • yeah well, they have one thing in common :)

  • Or not :p

  • This is ARIAS 2007 AWARDS

  • btw, I think this is the ARIAS 2006 or 2007 performance

  • it's not the ARIAS, I just checked this might be the MTVS or something.

  • I know that the first half of their appearance is somewhere on youtube- it's of them accepting their lifetime acheivement award. There you can find out where this show is exactly.

  • I am pretty sure it was the MTV's they replayed it on Austar several times on the MTV channel...

  • Its the Australian MTV awards 2007, probably from about this time last year....

  • I don't know why everyone gets critical of his voice; granted, it's a hard song for him to sing, but from what I've seen on youtube, he hits this song dead on more than he misses. Look at Scott Weiland: he sounds awful sometimes at live shows, yet people keep going to see him. It's all part of the rock-show experience: you get to hear the notes being sung, but you also get the emotion and passion of the performance. It's hard to channel both 100%.

  • i agree 100%, hard to sing this one.

  • I saw them last night. He sang this, and avery other song perfectlu. They're awesome.

  • I meant perfectly. Youtube really needs an edit option.

  • mate i think the one without the perspective here is you.i mean honestly man, name afew singers who can or could ever sing across the night.i rest my case.

  • this song is really beautiful, and difficult to sing. i dont care if he doesnt reach the notes, he does transmits the powerful emotion of the song. i admire him, he's so talented and inspiring =)

  • Fuck man, I've got this song stuck in my head for two days already, it has a great hook, it's different but it's evolution, they reinvented their music and their selves too. He looks like fuckin' Justin Timberland-Timberlake

  • he is diggin the headbands, maroon 5ish

liked the old style more, but this track has a good hook!

  • its because he has a receding hairline. all that stress from depression took its toll I guess.

  • isnt live supposed to be about emotion and performance not perfection? thats what the cd is for, nobody is perfect and that song is really hard to sing, ive been a singer for a few years and i cant even come close

  • he is one of the best rock singers ever, easily, i have no idea why people are so hard on him about his voice, its not easy touring and traveling and not sleeping or eating the way you do when your stuck at home, and i dont think he writes out of his range he just likes to challenge himself. it would sound boring if he just played it safe

  • Fuck top perfomance. The best bands in the world are the bands that get better with each album, and always take a different direction without loosing their roots. Young Modern is their best album to date . Seeing them in melbourne . Also respect to paul mac, you can really hear his influence in this album

  • Ya ya. I knew every silverchair fanatic would jump on me. I'm still right. Yes - I've seen them 3 times, every performance was excellent. He's still writing out of his vocal range :).

And to say he's one of the - or the best rock singers ever.... is ridiculous. Get a little perspective please.

  • In my opinion, I would rather have him try for the high notes and fail than to play it safe. Safe is boring.

  • seconded

  • More precisely, I said that he was "one of the best rock singers alive". So I meant "at the moment".

Moreover, I really think he is... Not only because of his good technical level, which is actually not as impressive, but also because he's extraordinary inspired. The way he sings is particularly original and that's the most important.

A lot of singers are extremely talented, but sing in a boring way. Not Daniel Johns, who always tries to reach something new.

  • please cphunk! in Diorama tour Daniel sing so great, was perfect, in that time he was the best vocal ever (sorry for my bad english)

  • I was super into these guys for Neon Ballroom, Freak Show, and a few tracks on Diorama. Just seems to me that Daniel's gotten a lot sloppier live? I really like Young Modern (though I find it lacks any sort of soul). Compare this performance to this:

    youtube.c om/watch?v=i-tZao9UaL0

No real comparison. Different points in his life I guess? I'm sure some people will hate on me for this, but just being honest.

  • To be honest, the 2 songs you want to compare are technically completely different. So it's just totaly useless to compare them... Moreover, "Straight Lines" is a lot more difficult to sing than "Spawn Again" and all that we can say is that Daniel Johns was probably unable to sing such a song in 1999. He was too weak to reach the notes contained in the chorus... So I don't really understand what you mean :/

  • He's writing out of his vocal range. He did on Diorama as well. Sounds totally strained and often out of tune live. This is coming from a person that was so into silverchair that his friends bought him a silver chair for his birthday. Signed stuff, you name it. I'm not a hater, I think I'm just being honest. Dropping the key a lot of this stuff was written in would have solved a lot of the problems he's having live imo.

  • Even if some songs are not perfectly sung (Straight Lines is one of them), Daniel Johns is one of the best rock singers alive ^^ When he performs "Straight lines" like he did during the australians MTV awards, or like he did during the Young Modern Launch Show (this one was close to perfect), I just want to applause.

  • Dan's live performances are honestly brillant most of the time, and i don't care if it's not absolutely perfect. Some gigs in 2006 were awfull (Clipsall 500 was horrible) but since the Homeback 2006 in Sydney, his singing is impressive again. He was really unlucky to get this fucking laryngitis at Jay Leno and I sincerely think that Silverchair is a totaly "must see band" live. More in 2007 than in 1999.(Sorry If make some mistakes, I'm french, i try to write in english as well as I can ^^).

  • Have you ever sang day after day, and performed continuously? It's not out of his range, it's just things like climate and continuous performing can have a serious effect on your voice. You'd be amazed at how different this song would sound whether it was the first or last song in a line up.

Although an awards show could be different. You're too used to artisits who lipsynch. They're in key because they aren't actually singing. That's the album in the background.

  • Oh yeh .. copyright sh!t i get ya!

  • MTV Australian Music Awards. Thanks man :D

  • there hasn't been a perfect live vocal performance of this song, he almost nailed this one ..hope his throat gets better...

  • Outofphase, you are the fuckin' man.

  • if only he sang like this on jay leno :( STUPID LARYNGITIS!
