  • Hi Mavoz,

Have you tried a test with the onboard H4N mic using the same settings?

I would like your inputs about the audio quality, especially the hiss in the recording.

  • @aidilteper Hi..since trying this test I've personally just ended up using the H4N for all my serious recording...and an onboard Rode mic simply for reference sound. I then use Plural Eyes to sync in post...this brings great results and provides phantom power etc. (it is an extra step...but does bring great results.) The onboard H4n mic is ok for loud source sound...recording a choir close up etc...but like all mics has its own advantages and disadvantages...

  • I think I am going to go with H4n with XLR mic of some type on camera. I have also seen some videos of people going directly into canon mic port from H4n to eliminate need for sync.

  • was the sound recorded directly on the 60d?

  • Thanks for the comments...I've actually just tried the Video Mic direct into the 60D...have also noticed that hiss...is not too bad when there is a lot of background noise...but in quieter conditions it is not great...for my next project I'll go with dual sound...the Video mic to capture what it can...and the H4n for more ambience...interviews etc.

  • Great video. I was wondering if you could use a mic like the Rode VideoMic plugged into the H4n, which would then feed into the 60D. The VideoMic plugged directly into the 60D gives me a horrible hiss, but I'd like to avoid syncing later on. Would the VideoMic - H4n - 60D combo help things?

  • Excellent test, not many around with examples to back it up. I wonder if you could do that without hiss in all circumstances ie. Very loud ambient room. Could you then turn down the volume on the h4n? Then check the peaking on the 60d.

  • Hi Mavoz,

Very nice test! Hearing the NT4 directly into the 60D without hissing is really good. When you do another test could you stand a little further from the mic and add a little pause (silence) for noise level check?

  • @Idsz Thanks Idsz...I'll try and do another check soon...
