I almost had tears of nostalgia after listening to this song because I had sung this song several times while at school, especially as part of Independence Day celebrations or Republic Day celebrations. I don't remember listening to it after school. And I certainly didn't know that MSS Amma had sung this song. Listening to this song after so very many years in MSS Amma's voice is simply ethereal. Thanks for putting this song up.
Not a single time that I did not cry when I listen to you Amma,my divine mother.
How must it feel to be loved by millions of people? There are millions who hug your picture to their hearts and cry amma, why do I get so emotional on listening to you?
This is awesome .. MS has packed more emotion (verging on the sublime) into this song than any Bengali I have known - such was the power of MS's music.
It was so rightly said about MS - she did not sing, she was music herself. I had the opportunity to listen to her sing live during the 80s in Ernakulam (where I grew up) and then a couple of times in Delhi in the mid 90s. She embodies goddess Laskhmi in beauty and goddess Saraswathy in talent !!
One of the greatest patriotic songs in Bengali and again by DL Roy. MSS's voice and singing style are just amazing. My salute to MSS and thanks to the pbagchi.
Someone commented that the intervening part is a translation in Kannada because she is a Carnatic vocalist. I know Kannada and it is definitely _not_ Kannada. It is in Sanskrit. She has recorded the same song with her guru Shri Dilip Kumar Ray on HMV and the same is available on iTunes Store (with a preview). Just search for the phrase "dhanadhanya-pushpe" in the iTunes application.
An awesome rendition. I haven't heard anyone else sing this song with as much devotion (couldn't find a better word for "dawrod" in Bengali) as MS has done. Although her Bengali pronunciation may not be as perfect as one would want it to be, but then doesn't music transcends all barriers - linguistic ones included?
Arguing about who does Bangla belong to is a bit ridiculous. The grand old masters of Bengali literature all happened in undivided India. Robi Thakur was vehemently against any division, even as early as the 1906 (?) when the first division took place.
This rendition may be considered the most authentic as she learnt it from her guru Dilip Kumar Roy, although various 'modernized' renditions are in vogue now.
Can we forgo the useless debate about ownership of such cultural gems which not only belong to the Bangalis and Indians but to the common heritage of mankind in general? Perhaps it should unite rather than divide us. We all are proud inheritors of the great Indian civilization.
To mitraprasenjit: Please listen to the entire song sung here by MS Subhalakshmi and focus on the time sections 2.11 to 2.57 and again from 2.58 to 3.23. My last comment (question) pertains to these sections.
Can somebody please write the Sanskrit lyrics? I got the second half from Roopanilayaam...to Janmabhoomi naomi. But I am not able to decipher the first half from Chandrakatara (not even sure if that is the word)...Thanks.
And to "altrnatvthinker": This song is indeed written by D.L.Roy and not Tagore.
well i do not know or heard about ms. subbulaksami. but surprising is that i always thought that this music was written by rabindranath tagore, are yu right or i am here damn wrong?
Although MS Subbulakshmi doesn't speak Bangla (or Bengali), her intimate touch & warmth throughout the song is felt so profoundly. Kudus to her! thx Pradipto for sharing!
"in the late 19th century. Played a big part in the Indian freedom struggle and also in the 1971 freedom movement of East Bengal. Continues to be extremely popular in Bengal even today"
Well as far as I know most of indians speak bangla, except the West Bengal Province.
We called it Bangladesh and in Bangladesh,we speak Bangla Not Begali.

Is it ingreji or english? Foraashi or French or Francaise? Is it Mishor or Egypt? Is it Maarkin Jukto Raashtro or USA? A rose is a rose, doesn't matter what you call it.
It is true most Indians don't speak bangla but there are 8 crore bangla speakers in West Bengal (Poshchim Bongo/Bangla in Bangla)...and yes Robindronath wrote our national anthem too ;)
lets get to the point, golaapkey jey naamey daako na keno golaap golaap i.but the problem is we live in information age,not the Utopian age.but some people wanted to make others Utopian with muscle that's all.aamee aamar nijer maakey sara onno kaakey maa bolbo na..........
Most Indians also dont speak; Gujerti, Punjabi, Kashmiri, Urdu, Tamil, Malayalam, Oriya, Marati, Kannada, Telugu, Chattighari.. all big states... SO YOUR POINT IS?
Bangla is also spoken in Bangladesh, u idiot. Political Borders came into being only 60 years ago. Bengali is the English (anglasised) adaptation of Bangla.

@ayonam my half baked effort
Chandraktara nayanabhiramah(Magnificent beauty of moon and stars)
Prabha shwara bhati kutashwi devam (grace of so many gods glowing above us)
Nilavaralagna taritibhi shiva ( like the cobalt blue lightning of Shiva)
Swapnabha bodhou cha bihanga kuja (the singing birds like in our dream)
Roopa nilayam atulaniyam amit baibhabo rama ( the incomparable beauty of our limitless wealth)
Garahi lagi kon bariha janmabhumi nahmi (we are proud of our mother land)

this is not sanskrit. it is a bengali song written during the freedom movement. it is a very popular nationalist song in west bengal and bangladesh.
