Chrysler always meant for the hemi (Firepower and Desoto Firedome) as big V-8's with 2 four barrel cards right up untildiscontiuned in 1959 - 4 years later when the "new" hemi came out it had 2 fours & posted performane the new 392 Hemi with fuel injections etc has a hard time equalling.
What a lot of people don't realize is that the original "Hemi" was a Chrysler development during World War 2; it grew up through the 1950's in the 392, cam back in the middle 60's as the 426 and now is offered in the 2012 Challenger and Charger once again as a 392. Sidelight was Mercedes when they owned Chrysler could never come up with a better engine. Long live the Mopar Hemi. Good old American Muscle.
just curious, how do the original exhaust manifolds do in the horsepower/torque range in comparison to headers? Are the original manifolds very restrictive ( I know they weigh a ton, but weight aside )?
Why would you write a thing like that? Is all you care about just being faster than the next guy on the street? Dont you ever appreciate the engines themselves?
I like all engines i rebuild them, my all time favorite, for versatility, is the small block chevrolet. Because you can get parts for them anywhere. I'm not knocking any type engine, I like them ALL.......
@oldstyle1957 I would agree, you can get small block chevrolet parts anywwhere. And you can build one on a 500$ budget. Thats what's great about them. certainly isnt the terrrible (cheap) metalurgey / engineering. I too appreciate all internal combustion engines for what they are. However My favorite engine(s) come from the earlier chrysler products 1964 - 1972. My favorite race car has to be one of Bob reeds w2 340 cars!!
@moparsbymosher At what temp do those Hemi's like to run at and what size lift was the cam? Im referring to the race hemi in the fury's and such not they later street hemi's.
ok now you can just stick that in my dart and ill be good . wait i love my small block i have had several big blocks and seem to be cranky in this cold part of the country so ya maybe not .

Actually, a fully done hemi to original would be around 25,000. That's a fact.

I've heard that an original hemi, actually built in the 1960's, is worth 20 grand today.

Why the heck is there an ugly toyota in the background while this beautiful piece of AMERICAN history is running?

how big this damn thing is really makes it a surprising fact to know it displaces 426 cubic inches and not like 624.

@GigaMinion It's just the way the cylinder heads & valve covers are setup up, really does make the engine look beefy. =)

Back when cars had the "fucking move your ass" pedal, rather than todays "just gas" pedal.

Then why write that the ford 427 cammer would take it? why not write something anti-trashy in the first place like what you just said?

It belongs to a customer. The numbers match the original '65 Plymouth Race Hemi that it's going to.
