Not mentioned here is that Steve Winwood is a musical genius in his own right. He can play something like 18 instruments and complemented the Traffic albums with saxophone. Everything is true about Clapton being low key and a gentleman when playing with others but Winwood is no slouch on the guitar. I just wish both of them would get a little more competitive this coming up tour. I have tickets for 2 shows and can hardly wait.
E is a gentleman in situations like this. It's Steve's song, and it's not a guitar competition w/E. It would be uncouth for E to try and smoke Steve here. E behaves in similar fashion when he plays w/MKnopfler, BBK, RWaters, but he will occasionally let loose with and "old comrade like Buddy Guy. There are "style" issues also, like with CSantana or JBeck, but they really don't come into play in this performance with SteveW where his and E's style are actually quite similar.
Eric is amazing, but it's little known that Stevie is an AMAZING guitar player in his own right, and could hold his own with Eric, Pete Townshend, all the best of the day. He is actually the one to play the original solo on "Dear Mr. Fantasy". There's a good article of how they "worked stuff out by vibe" in Guitar World this month...but watch Stevie on this song at Santa Monica in the 70's. He's amazing...not to mention they're good mates. Always that way when playing with close friends, eh? :)

Agreed all'round. I saw SW perform at CGF2007 at Bridgeview... E and Stevo are great together! Their guitar styles are quite similar. I expect that the msg performances will be released on dvd later this year. Also, a mini-tour is something that they both would like to do. Keep those fingures crossed!
What a music!

The solo at 5:15 puts a chill down my spine -- guess I need to see them in Chicago.

Hard to believe I saw Clapton on the same stage @ Msg 35 years ago with Cream - frizzy "do" and all. The man is like fine wine - better with age.

Eric, you're fabulous but you got smoked on this one. No one can top Winwood on this song, and I mean no one!

Clapton looked bored as shit for the first couple of minutes but then you see him get into it during the solo :)
