I remember secret of mana. me, my dad, and my brother would sit around the tv and all play together. it is a key feature to my childhood and all my life right now. just a couple of months ago, I found my old super nintendo and invited a friend over to play the game with me. it brought back all my memories of being young i wish they redid this game so that the generation of kids today could know the wonders of secret of mana.
@SPeacock i'd say 80's and 90's in general, cuz i mean even the final fantasies at the end of the 90's had fucking epic music, arguably better than ff6's music.... but secret of mana and chrono trigger and link to the past were all epic, even donkey kong country had epic music...
@DaRkLoRd1061 :) The music in these games kind of remind me of the music of progressive rock bands like Genesis - especially early 70s Genesis (Firth of Fifth, The Musical Box, Supper's Ready, The Lamb, etc.)
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as Secret Of Mana. It’s up on my channel ORTmusic to check out and download!
Whoah, magic nostalgia moment. The SNES truly had some memorable music. Secent of Mana, Equinox, Contra, Actraiser, Ghouls N' Ghosts. Thems were the days. :heart

Eartbound, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger all deserves a special place in video game history
JRPG died with FFX !!! I know I will have tons of hate replies but...damn this game killed the RPG genre. Just saying NO WORLD MAPS is enough...because all the other companies said "yo if Square did this and it works, Why Not ? and It will save us some money cause we dont have to program a World Map !!!"
Nah, I think it all died when Squaresoft and Enix came together. Not only that but I think after well over a decade, the "chosen warriors must save the world from evil!" formula got a little...old. I mean, I realize a lot of games still surround this idea, but it's not so black and white compared to the JRPGs.
All these people acting like modern games are nothing but graphics. Modern games still have amazing gameplay and stories. Go replay Secret of Mana and see how poorly it has aged.
In ten years from now we'll look back to today and think "aah the nostalgia, so many shitty games, ohh man remember call of duty and halo? They sucked so much ass!"
@esideras That's kinda unfair to the games of today. If you look past the generic shooters and God of War/shitty Mass Effect games being shoved down our throats, you can find some really amazing games that can actually rival some 8-and16-bit gems. ^_^
@ScorpionAndZangief You're entitled to your opinion, but just letting you know that your opinion of Mass Effect is shit. :) I agree with Esideras, you clearly have no idea what a good story, plot, or gameplay are.
@esideras Actually, RPG's today are legendary. Good enough to easily match up to the days of Super and 64. Fable II & III, Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption (not sure if it's technically an RPG), Dragon Age, Borderlands...you can't dis an entire generation just because of Square Enix. (P.S. Skyrim>all)
More sophisticated cutscenes haven't allowed game designers to use video games to their advantage when it comes to storytelling, they essentially pause the game and force you to watch a movie. Video games and film are both visual mediums but interactivity is something almost wholly unique to games and something as simple as player-advanceable dialogue can create a very strong emotional investment in the story and characters.
@Conchobhar I like especially when a game uses the calm between plot events to allow the player to wander around from point A to B. It's a very valuable moment to conjure contemplation on what may have just transpired and the world you're exploring. You don't get that moment to rest during a play or a novel without literally halting the story and removing yourself from the experience. If a game is going to pad its length to warrant the $60 price tag I'd rather it did this than force me to grind.
I'm thinking about playing this game in my winter vacation emulated (never played it before). Is it still worth playing with games like FF13 and Fallout 3 out there?
this always brings tears to my eyes even though i never played this game when it c out i bought it of ebay along with many other classics such as EarthBound, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, ect i hate what video games have became there all about the graphics not the plot or music and im only 13
Man, brings back good memories. I still have this game on my SNES, lucky me. For those who missed it, you can buy it through the Virtual Console on your Wii (if you have one!)
Quoted for truth. Still, it isn't as bad as it could be. Every now and then we're reminded why we play video games. Super Mario Galaxy, Sonic Colors, Donkey Kong Country Returns... I guess what one should do is ignore the bad and play the good.
wow :,) this game has sooo many great memories :D what an amazing game im glad got to play it!! no games released today will ever be like secret of mana or other great games in the past......maybe they should do a remake of secret of mana with all the music and stuff??
This music and game in general DEFINED gaming for the SNES, and has set a bar for other modern consoles that I've yet seen reached, let alone surpassed.
Oh, I remember my early beginnings of playing games... I was just 4 years old... and since now I never ever played such an epic game like this. The epic melody, the storyline, the graphics and even the fantastic gameplay... everything was so legendary... I think there is no game which can ever beat Secret of Mana
I love this video, I love this opening... thanks for bringing back my childhood in those old dusty rooms

@OasisfanDan7 buy it! you can't go wrong with an snes, it's my favorite system of all time, and i'm still finding games to play for it that i've never played before and loving them, so it's not nostalgia talking :)
What's more important? Graphics, characters that speak, and an alt rock soundtrack? Or gripping story and gameplay that makes you constantly want to replay the game?
Wow, I forgot about this game and watching this has braught back alot of memories and gives me a warm feeling inside, it was a great game and i'm glad I was around back then to play the likes of these.
I played this game so much as a kid. I used to turn it on, and go to bed, listening to this over and over, It helped me sleep. Epic game. Forever and always.
I'm one of those kids who played secret of mana day after day, night after night, and I was only a kid. The story and the music boost the feeling while you're playing. When I was listening back the intro for the first time, what makes my eyes watery wasn't that classic game but more about the piece of music, so my feeling is not based on the game itself but on music. I put the cartridge in the slot, then this music started to play and I just went "wow". Sixteen years later I can still play this and enjoy it every bit as much as I did then. They really don't make 'em like they used to.
This theme along with the Final Fantasy theme are probably two of the greatest game themes in the history of gaming. Just a few chords and they draw you back to into the memories of the game so easily.
I bought this game cheap afew months back and the plan was to sell it on hoping to make £40 on it. Stupidly i decided to play it(relive childhood memories) and theres not a chance i could ever sell it now, lol. Epic game! and with all great games comes great sound tracks! One of many beautiful songs in this game.
Too bad squaresoft is gone. We might never see a game like this ever again. So epic. I remember back in the day when games weren't so much about amazing graphics as they were about fantastic gameplay and storylines.
@jacksprat1990 yes, they were about the story. Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 3 Super Mario RPG....Square knew how to make a game with a great story as a backbone.
You mentioned 4 games by Squaresoft that had a story but what about all the rest of the games in the 16-bit days. I meant everything. Mainly the Megadrive.
Well that's true, if you're going to compare to the majority, then yes, majority is about gameplay, but we're comparing the best of the best, IMO, the highest rated games of the more modern systems don't compare to the highest rated of the SNES generation. That is all I was really trying to say.
@IRONSTOVE It's really sad that the mainstream got ahold of gaming... those days are gone now I suppose, never to return. Once corporations sense that they can make any amount of money at all, they pounce and being reproducing the same product again and again to sponge as much money as they can from their exploitation, making a cheap facsimile of something real
@IRONSTOVE They aren't gone....well.....unless you mean Squaresoft by name, since they are know as Square-Enix now. Oh, and they are re-releasing the game again, however it's for the iPhone/iPod Touch line (and I imagine the iPad too).
I have the same thoughts you do on videogames. Kids today are missing out. Secret of Mana is one of the reasons I bought a Nintendo Wii. To be able to play videogames from the best time in videogame history is outstanding.
@IRONSTOVE Basically my sole reason for studying video-game design next year is this. I long for the games of the past :\ Chrono Trigger, the FFs, Secret of Mana...
Back then, gfx weren't important, cause they were so limited (not saying that they didn't do good and create compelling visuals). Because of that, they focused solely on gameplay and story. This is something a lot of newer games lack, I think. It might just be my nostalgia talking though.
@Bunji2k6 Thats true... the sadness of all this is the capitalism. game studios want to show of their best with high end graphics so you better get a 70" flatscreen .... no, 3D flatscreen i mean! games have gained more attention from people over the years and the end is not yet in sight! people are so blended by graphics.... it´s like : what do you wanna buy? hmmm i think ps3 it´s got better graphics! what the heck?but hey, better be happy to have lived in a time where graphics were secondary =)
I know this is probably common knowledge, and alot of people will agree, but alot will disagree too, and it's probably already been said, but I just want to reiterate on this little fact:
Games such as Secret of Mana, will never have competition with games of today, never. The Music is Superb, The Story is all encompassing....for the most part. The characters are cute and loveable and fierce. Todays games. They're just pretty to look at. Now me, I've had it since release.
@IRONSTOVE Don't be so quick to write off modern games just yet. Lost Odyssey is a good indication that there's still some people in the industry that remember that an RPG is centered around a story.
This is a wunderfull game But is not so Epic Like Lufia Rise of sintrals this game is so epicsecret of mana is epic too^^ but my favorite game is Lufia
I love this song, best fucking song ever made, so beautiful!
Me and my friend actually beat this game several times being 7 and 9 years old, something me and my brother couldnt repeat that easily towards the end, about 13 years later..
Hey guys, if you're into games and such check out my channel. I'm into making action rpgs and things of that nature and I'm holding a closed beta soon. I'd like some people who are interested to tell me what sort of games they like!
If you like things of that nature send me a comment or subscribe.
holy shit i just found out this names game since forever. i remember playing this game and i thught its musics and gameplay were awasome.<3forever nintendo
I am with Anzeh on this one, it's kind of like calling Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 3 English version even though there is a Final Fantasy 3 that's different.
i was 6 years old...it was on christmas. my mother bought this game for my brother and me. we played this game with 3 controlers tillw e finished it completly after some weeks. it was my first rpg and it somehow influenced my life. since that i love rpgs, and i would never miss that time. if i ever got kids, i ll play this game with them, too.
Woh, thats awesome, did not hear this music since years, even like this game, and now... this feeling is great, i want to play it again, the first game i have ever played, cause it was so awesome, and the music too
i think this was my 2nd. my 1st was Zelda, then some weird game with a skeleton's tomb on the front i think, but when u press random buttons, the screen changes(probsably found the start button -_- i was like 3). So this is like my 3rd RPG, and one of my favorite games. I'd get it on Wii, but my mom still hasnt got me Wii points Xl
yea no doubt and also some of the situations the song was applied to made it even more a tear jerker gotta say the music made the game easy to lose yourself in
I remember naming these characters Creste (the Hero), Hope (the Female), and Pixel (the little guy) cause Creste is an anagram of Secret (as in he's the Secret of the World of Mana), Hope is from a city called Pandora (thus the only thing left to escape which is not evil) and Pixel is a sprite (a little play on graphical terms).
secret of mana is not turn based combat, but after playing all of the SNES era final fantasies, iv enjoyed secret of mana so far. i actually havent beaten yet
first played this while i was in japan :') such memories

One of many beautiful songs in this game.

Thanks for posting. Too bad the ending got cut off. I miss that beautiful Eminor chord at the end.

This is a good Squaresoft game. None of this turnbased boring crap.
jacksprat1990 2 years ago
Too bad squaresoft is gone. We might never see a game like this ever again. So epic. I remember back in the day when games weren't so much about amazing graphics as they were about fantastic gameplay and storylines.
IRONSTOVE 2 years ago 108
theyre square enix now.
spaceeskimo11t 2 years ago
@IRONSTOVE Games were about storylines back in the day? I'm pretty sure it was more about the gameplay and music.
jacksprat1990 2 years ago
@jacksprat1990 yes, they were about the story. Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 3 Super Mario RPG....Square knew how to make a game with a great story as a backbone.
xerowrestling 2 years ago
You mentioned 4 games by Squaresoft that had a story but what about all the rest of the games in the 16-bit days. I meant everything. Mainly the Megadrive.
jacksprat1990 2 years ago
Well that's true, if you're going to compare to the majority, then yes, majority is about gameplay, but we're comparing the best of the best, IMO, the highest rated games of the more modern systems don't compare to the highest rated of the SNES generation. That is all I was really trying to say.
IRONSTOVE 2 years ago
@IRONSTOVE It's really sad that the mainstream got ahold of gaming... those days are gone now I suppose, never to return. Once corporations sense that they can make any amount of money at all, they pounce and being reproducing the same product again and again to sponge as much money as they can from their exploitation, making a cheap facsimile of something real
sborowsky 1 year ago
@IRONSTOVE Those were the days!!! Too bad we probably wont experience that kind of feeling again :'(
DaXia333 1 year ago
@IRONSTOVE They aren't gone....well.....unless you mean Squaresoft by name, since they are know as Square-Enix now. Oh, and they are re-releasing the game again, however it's for the iPhone/iPod Touch line (and I imagine the iPad too).

@IRONSTOVE
I have the same thoughts you do on videogames. Kids today are missing out. Secret of Mana is one of the reasons I bought a Nintendo Wii. To be able to play videogames from the best time in videogame history is outstanding.
BuffaloHockeyTown 1 year ago
@IRONSTOVE Basically my sole reason for studying video-game design next year is this. I long for the games of the past :\ Chrono Trigger, the FFs, Secret of Mana...
Back then, gfx weren't important, cause they were so limited (not saying that they didn't do good and create compelling visuals). Because of that, they focused solely on gameplay and story. This is something a lot of newer games lack, I think. It might just be my nostalgia talking though.
Bunji2k6 1 year ago
@Bunji2k6 Thats true... the sadness of all this is the capitalism. game studios want to show of their best with high end graphics so you better get a 70" flatscreen .... no, 3D flatscreen i mean! games have gained more attention from people over the years and the end is not yet in sight! people are so blended by graphics.... it´s like : what do you wanna buy? hmmm i think ps3 it´s got better graphics! what the heck?but hey, better be happy to have lived in a time where graphics were secondary =)
KeunT4e 1 year ago
@KeunT4e But the cool thing is, even most of the BAD snes games still looked pretty darn good.

@IRONSTOVE

@IRONSTOVE imo games like SoM and Terranigma also have the best and most amazing graphics :)

AHEM...... It was Squaresoft that did it.... not "Square-Enix"
zentotoro 2 years ago 11
Well, Squaresoft at that time, but since that company does no longer exist, I thought I'd say Square-Enix so everyone would understand.
Anzeh 2 years ago
@Anze That's not standard procedures I am afraid.
Steven676 2 years ago
@zentotoro read it again and come back later kk? Or can you not read "I thought I'd say Square-Enix so everyone would understand."?
Anzeh 2 years ago
I am with Anzeh on this one, it's kind of like calling Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 3 English version even though there is a Final Fantasy 3 that's different.

i think this was my 2nd. my 1st was Zelda, then some weird game with a skeleton's tomb on the front i think, but when u press random buttons, the screen changes(probsably found the start button -_- i was like 3). So this is like my 3rd RPG, and one of my favorite games. I'd get it on Wii, but my mom still hasnt got me Wii points Xl
