@ryand9282 Racers are pussies these days Ryan. They won't challenge the IHRA or the NHRA. They just tuck their tails and skulk off and then destroy their machinery on sub par tracks while the track owner the body BIg Wheels sip Champagne in their boxes.
looks like he jumped on the brakes a little hard when the shutes didnt come out... Im willing to bet they had carbon fiber brakes on that car to cause them to lock up that fast
I remember hearing about this from my neighbor who is good friends with Carl. Baker lives just down the road from me. Not too sure what hes doing now a days>?
They have a "cannon" (for lack of a better term) arrangement that spits them out into the airstream behind the car, because when they are mounted under the spoiler they are essentially in still air. These "cannons" are either a coil spring or a compressed air ram, and they are what actually deploys the chute after the cable releases them. If these fail then the chute will either just tumble out of the mount and posssibly tangle in the wheelie bars or simply not deploy at all.
Are chutes required for pro street class? I'm a auto/performance tech by trade, and was thinking of takeing my chev all the way to that level. Never raced prostreet before, or with anything requireing chutes.
Remembered watching this when it aired. One of the scariest Pro Stock accidents I have seen. Bruce Allen and Kenny Koretsky on the NHRA side is still the scariest in my opinion.
Great video, thanks,if you maybe could have the huge wreck of Steve Spiess in 1999 at Bradenton, that would be a another great video to see, that was really scary.
Play by Play is James Bates (TENDED TO NEVER SHUT UP) and doing color is "Big Daddy" Don Garlits (Never really gets a chance to talk) The coverage of IHRA that year sucked. Speedvision had Alcohol Funny Car and Pro Stock while TNN had Top Fuel, Pro Mod, and Nitro Harley. Never live, and never shown in conjunction with one another.

Is it just me, Or do the IHRA prostockers wreck more violently than their NHRA Counterparts?
nitroholic2002 3 years ago 5
I think because the IHRA pro stockers have 820 cubic inch engines which makes them a good 15 mph faster than the 500 cubic inch NHRA Pro Stocks
fueldragster 3 years ago
Yeah, and the time comparison now would be:
NHRA Pro Stock - low 6.6's @ 210 mph
IHRA Pro Stock - apprx low 6.3's @ 220 mph

Why didn't the chutes open?
salemcripple 4 years ago
It could have been any number of things. Air launchers lose pressure, spring launchers get bound, you just never know.
cmccarthy 4 years ago
I thought they were operated by a cable.

A parachute is required by the NHRA and IHRA for any vehicle exceeding 150 miles per hour in the quarter mile.

Don't forget Bob Glidden in 1986 at Atlanta, the one Steve Evans called "Glidden's 6 and a half flip trip down the Atlanta Dragway".

That was ugly right there.

it was prolaby better that he did flip rather than try and slow down before he got to the sand. those are some shitty announcers
