What's sad is that a bit of simple pre planning would have prevented this. Cranes have a chart that shows max load for a given distance and angle. Before even starting the pick he should have checked the weight of the pool and the distance from the crane to the final location, that would have determined what elevation he needed to keep the arm at or if he would need more counterweight or a larger crane.
