by retarding the cam in relation to the crank the valves close later and provide better efficiency at high rpms

it might be being broken in but that "smoke" is not msoke, its water. some drag boats have water ran through the engine to cool them down, so then they dont need a radiator. my dads southwind has the same thing. water gets picked up through the jet pump intake, ran through the motor, then spit out the exhaust

It's a jet, you can see the big Berk' hanging off the back. Only time you'll see an engine face backwards is with a V-Drive; outdrives and jets face forward. Pro/Con for each is too numerous to list here!
