  • well, i've use ubuntu for 3 years, the problem is not how to make it full of effects, it's how to make a balance between beauty and speed, Furthermore , you've to know where to find the necessary files or unwanted files'll just pile up and make your system slower quickly

  • In addition: to all you Apple lovers. Bill Gates is your almighty saviour and overlord. Thanks to him & his sucess with Windows dominance, your able to have your Macs today! Back in 1997 Apple desperately need 150 miillion to avoid bankruptcy and Bill Gates bailed them out. Google it! So thank Bill for allowing almighty Apple to survive long enough to create your Mac crap that you like to bash Windows with. I can't stand foolish Mac fanboys who bash MS or Linux. Go learn some tech history.

  • is you want OSX why dont you just buy it?

  • apple wannybe

  • @piercydavid1 - Hey idiot with the "apple wannybe" comment. MAC OSX is built from Linux kernal moron. If anything I would call Apple a linux wannabe. Apple, took what was open source and developed by others, stripped away the functionality, restricted it to only work with expensive apple approved hardware (Same hardware PC uses BTW), and made it where you can only purchase from them. OSX has a nice front end but it's still a limited version of linux underneath. Why u think it's so stable?

  • cool but IUbuntu has more effects

  • looks like a mod.

  • Yes. That was a response to olelyn. Your video was cool.

  • omfg why cant you ppl learn to use "linux" at the right time?!

linux is JUST a kernel! u either have ubuntu, xubuntu, suse, dsl, backtrack, fedora., learn that linux is JUST a friggin kernel!

  • you're right but a little bit overreacting ;-)

We just call it Linux and we all know what it really means. No point in getting too excited about it.

  • What the hell?

  • @olelyn That's because when people say Linux now they mean all Linux distributions. And when they say "Linux desktop rocks" what they really mean is "Compiz Fusion" rocks... Just like when people say PC they mean Windows... But PC doesn't mean Windows, it means "personal computer"... and no one really likes Linux they like "Compiz Fusion" and if "Compiz Fusion" was on a PC "Windows" we would even need Linux... "Linux distributions"

  • How can I get the snowy effect -_-

  • Dude, this is amazing. This is why i love linux. Can't wait until i get my new pc so i can run compiz fusion. (current laptop has an unsupported gfx card and other problems besides).

  • I guess it's a little like a Mac, other than the fact that Linux is awesome and Mac totally ruined the concept of a computer. You could either build a computer for $500 and have a fast, free OS with a great interface, or you could spend $10000 on a computer that's slower and has an OS with a terrible interface (and one with a mouse that has only 1 button).

  • This is so cool! I just learned more about linux, and this looks great because the MAC OS is pretty sweet and it is amazing what you can do with linux, now i am a newbie in linux, would it be difficult for a person like myself to set-up my linux like this??

  • not too hard, just find a decent tutorial on it

  • Google Ubuntu. To watch movies/dvds affectively though, you have to get a "Win32" folder filled with codecs and drop it in /usr/lib. Then just install Kaffiene. The Ubuntu OS has a button in it's menu that lets you get Kaffiene automatically

  • People like this kind of effects (that's why they prefer Mac's over M$). Showing that Linux can give them the same "look and feel" is the best way to convince them. On the other hand it is a good benchmark of its performance. There are videos without "effects" but in most cases to technical to be a good advertisement. Anyway... it was a nice comment. Thanks!

  • Yea! I'm running DL! People like the look of the Mac but not the Mac OS itself!

  • I like the mac pro.....but linux is on it. The new macs are nice, just in case you want to run some mac osx programs. But 8 out of 9 computers in my house run linux and only one runs mac osx for reasons known to me. M$ is not allowed on my home network at all. -Pizo56 on AIM if you need help with compiz-fusion

  • Why buy a Mac when you don't have to ?

  • why buy, when u can get linux it for free..

  • and linux has such versatility... idk what everyone is smoking now days but I've been using linux for about 8 months now and I wouldnt dare resort back to windows for anything other than gaming, yeah bill kinda forced me into that one. it sucks that dx10 is vista exclusive.

  • Is Linux good for anything other than playing around with your windows, and watching them displayed on the surface of a cube? Just curious, that's all I've ever seen it do in all the videos about it....

  • Desktop effects are the easiest thing to make video about. It might be difficult to make a video about the stability and performance of Linux. One has to find other sources of information about this kind of stuff. Just try it yourself! :-)

  • I think that for an average person linux is good enough. You can easily watch films, browse web, torrents, listen music write, MSN... But when you get the hang of it only the sky is the limit... I use it also for programming and games.

  • I am more productive on my Kubuntu (GNU/Linux) system than I ever was using Windows.

  • Just to show how flexible Linux is. Nothing else .

  • Give the community a favor, get linux for free.

Buy a mac, and your doing steve jobs and some other already wealthy apple executives a favor.

  • Fuck YOU. I use Archlinux + KDEmod myself, Linux user since 2001, yet I don't see the point of you kids doing that Mac-buntu shit.

I am 100% sure the ones who do this kind of thing wanna have a Mac, and use Linux only to say that "don't use Winsucks".

At the first opportunity (read it "Mac mini discounts"), you leave the community and turn into a fanboy Mactard.

  • Nice tool, create your own mac

  • i don't know why people need a video game for desktop.... it´s

    Suppose to help in work?

  • Why would someone record themselves doing work just to post it on youtube?

Obviously you wouldn't be wobbling windows around at work. You CAN turn the effects off and take advantage of all the powerful open source alternative software available to linux users.

  • Thats pretty cool. Thanks.

  • ya i did the same on my ubuntu and the cool thing about it, is i can have kxdocker plus kiba dock plus what ever running. i'm a 2 year newbie and i'm sold, linux rocks

  • Hey, how did you make Linux look like a Mac? Did you use a tutorial, or is that just a single theme? Can you post a link to the theme/tutorial?

  • Hi!

This is easy. First of all you need to install new kde style called baghira. Just google for baghira and you'll find a nice tutorial for cloning OSX.

If you want 3D desktop install beryl and emerald (window decorator). You can find osx-like emerald theme on the web without any problems. Last thing is a nice dock. That's kxdocker. Everything takes about 1 hour. Good luck!

  • Already did it with Gnome. I never liked KDE, so I just Googled for a ubuntu-to-os x tutorial. By the way, you should try Avant Window Navigator if you haven't already. You can make it look a bit more like the dock from that new Mac Leopard.

  • I've install AWN and have to say it's very cool! Especially that Leopard reflection.

  • Looks good, feels good and It's FREE.

  • Yes, unbelievable. Someone took a Mac and ran some linex applications. Very difficult to do if you don't have a few minutes in a day to spare. Thank you Apple for supporting this environment. To the rest of you, please keep being delusional.

  • It's nice that you think it's mac :-) This was my purpouse I now I see I have achived it. Tell me please, do you have this kind of 3D desktop and gelly windows in your mac? If you do, post a movie.

    ---

Reading your post I can conclude you're a newbie.

  • Nope, it's all linux. Dumbass!

  • Looks great. I see you're using beryl-vidcap. :3

  • You're right. It's vidcap. But I don't know how to get rid of that red rectangular in the bottom-left corner. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • linux + desktop = working charm !

    hardware specs pls.

  • athlon 3500 + 1 GB RAM

nVidia GeForce 6600 252 MB RAM

but it works on much older hardware.

the CPU usage is minimal ( at least not higher than when using standard KDE desktop )

I have it also on athlon 2000+ (1,6 GHz) with 192 MB RAM and GeForce 4 (64 MB).

There is no difference in performance on these two machines.

  • nice, lots of available resources.

what was the linux distro again? and the name of

the package that shows icon animations down in the middle of the screen?

    tnx

  • yes indeed- it allso need support from software manufactures laike adobe etc, othervise linux/mac= future os. ;) nice vid

  • That is really fantsy man!

  • Linux will soon be as popular as Mac OS X or M$ Windows. It just needs some more advertisment!

  • it's simply beryl

  • nice..how u did that
