Yes to the keens! I have the same pair on now in February with wool socks. Unless of course I'm heading into the woods. I have problems keeping any other footwear from smelling like death. Great video!
Excellent choice on the Keens. As a white-water river guide, they were my go to choice for anything I did on the water. By the looks of your Tevas, it has been a looooooong time since you bought a pair. Dont buy anymore. Teva quality has suffered DRAMATICALLY. Had a pair that lasted about two river miles before I went barefoot the rest of the day. Chaco makes a good sandal also. Great vid.
@sameasiteverwas122 Those Tevas are probably 15 years old!! There is no tread left in some places. Thanks for the tip I will keep my eyes open for another pair of KEENS or Chacos
You mean to tell me that you didn't camp out for a day at a mall and risk getting mugged, to gladly overpay for an authentic overseas handcrafted athlete sponsored basketball foot apparel?
from wikipedia: The single biggest advantage is that tanker boots use leather straps, rather than laces, to fasten to the wearer's feet. The problem with laces is that they can become undone easily and then entangled in the many exposed, moving parts of a tank, for instance the turret ring, and drag the wearer or part of his body into the machinery.
Just got a Yankee Prepper inspired buy at my door from Cabela's. I got a card so had a $25 credit & Sperry had some water shoes that look pretty good out & on sale for $29 from $69?. They make a great quality shoe, so I thought I'd take a chance for next to free + shipping. They feel really great & I'm sure they'll beat the hell out of converse & crocks. I love fishin trout in rocky streams & waders will drown you if you're not careful & hell with careful. Let you know how they wear in 10 years.
@tblbaby Oh wait, just checking out these Sperry's they are not even close the quality of those Keens. Not even close. Oh well they'll hold me while I'm saving & watching for an opportunity to grab a pair of far superior Keens. They are better than what I was doing anyway. Now I saw this & really check those Keen's closely which are rockin & dam near bullet proof, they ain't close to good enough. Stupid pull out inserts, Velcro strap & crap. I wanna divorce from my shoes. Maybe an annulment

Sooo so true about the Army boots. My first time I tried wearing non-issue boots made by Danner for a 12 mile ruck march I came in with blisters the size of golf balls on both my heels and 2 weeks later my little toenail on my right foot fell off. After that those boots became targets at the range.
Are they Tanker boots? I had a friend who has a pair off boots like those and he said they were called Tanker boots. I don't know what the strap is for though. I assumed it was for not breaking as easy as a shoe lace.
Thank you for making a useful (at least to me...) prepper video. This is exactly the topic I needed to focus on. Your insights have been invaluable. I'm getting me a pair of those diving socks!
Keens are ten month a year shoes down here in Texas. Best shoe I've ever owned. Bought (not cheap) my first pair about ten years ago...they are relegated to work around the house now but still working. Wore them to Nordstorm's (a snooty department store chain) in Austin once and the Men's Shoe Manager asked me what they were. Two months later same snooty dept store was carrying them.
f.y.i some of the red wings are now made in china! I love them for my climbing boots and I went in to buy a new pair of 616's and found out that they make them in china now! WTF?

@GunfightersINC I flew direct from N. Carolina in a C130 to Anchorage on my first visit to Alaska. One of the best times of my life. Very Beautiful. It was spring and I slept on the side of a fjord under the stars in just a sleeping bag. I was able to write letters at midnight because it was so bright out from Northern Lights. In the morning I woke up to killer whales chasing salmon.

It works really well put it on until the leather wont absorb it anymore and then just work it in with your hands.

I rely on my pair of desert Altama Mil Specs for most applications out here in Southern Commiefornia. (If I could leave, I would) When it occasionally drops to around freezing, I use the all leather Altama mil specs with heavyweight wool socks. Both pairs made in the USA. Good vid.
I have a pair of Danners too...and you're right they are awesome. The boots with the straps are tanker boots. The straps are there because tankers refuse to get off their track...or lace their boots....LOL. great vid!
hey Yankee, how'd you preserve the insides as well as the outsides? i only have a few pairs of footwear but after so much walking/standing etc, they worn down to shit
those are tanker boots, their really good for fire or if u get injured so you can get them off faster then messing with tangled laces, my dad still uses them :)
@21danger21 It's a rock solid very small investment. Easy to carry in your bag. If you ever get caught in a cold snap out there or soak a boot, they will save your feet. I got caught in a cold snap in the BWCA 2 years ago and it snowed several inches. The other guys all pulled out their big boots and double socks. I put on my diver socks and my keen sandals and I had the only warm feet. Take them off at night inside out in the sleeping bag and let your feet breath.
@Yankeeprepper And you said you were done putting prepping info online, lol! You're still a wealth of information, Yankee. I would have never, ever thought to use diving socks in the cold.
the boots with the leather straps are tanker boots and they have the leather straps because laces will tangled in something if they get loose, they also allow for better circulation to the feet since crew men may be sitting for long period of time, and laces will melt around hot temperatures that can be given off by a tank
I'm assuming you wear your "mandals" with socks too just to make a fashion statement right lol all good info but timberland pissed me off they discontinued my favorite light weight all leather upper work boot. I guess the flip flop crowd caused a slowdown in sales bastards !!!!!
I guess I haven't been following along closely enough, you seriously have had to block ppl for flip flop flappery, er... ass-flappery?? anyway good points all around. I see it as pretty simple. 1 = food, 2 = shelter (I group shoes and clothing here), and 3 = communications. I love my Danner's as well. YPFTW
@SomeGuyInSandy Yes. It is sadly true and a good indication of the state of "men" in general and these are "preppers"? Emotionally upset/Pissed over flip flop rejection. My next social experiment on youtube will be pointing out how stupid mullets look, that should be a real doosey. (Think of how much fun we could have had in the 80's pointing out how useless Members Only jackets were or tight Wrangler Jeans are if youtube would have been around......) Godbless America...
Well I wasn't aware that Emelda Marcos had a brother.LOL I agree, buy the best you can for your feet. I have a pair of Vasqu Sundowners I have had for over 15 years and the still carry on.
PLA, I'm not too worried about people listening in. I want comms for short range ops just to keep tabs on my group out of earshot. Other than someone getting my location from my transmissions, I could care less. Being able to talk to someone at distances is a great tactical advantage but like I said before, I’m not planning to use HT's for any serious story times.
I’m chomping at the bit to see how my KG-UV3D performs!
I say let people wear on their feet what they desire. I for one have to wear flip flops for teaching kayaking out of a short boat I can't wear shoes in. In the mean time, I really really want to see more about that truck! Looks like it turned out awesome.
I believe the boots in question are the "tanker boots" - I'm sorry if I'm vague on the name since I am not sure if they have a MILSPEC name to them. Also with the straps - since there are many moving parts with a tank, the straps reduce the chances of the boots becoming attached to any moving parts with the tank. Am I even close or is it a swing and a miss? lol
I really like the Converse boots. One you might want to look into is Hi-Tech's, I've used them a lot in my EMS career and love them.
Great video. I am in the market for another pair of Danner's myself. I just ripped the sole in mine, and they are not the resoleable kind (mine are glued), so this time around I think I will pick up a pair that is resoleable. I also agree that the Keen sandals are great. Saved my toes from getting smashed and banged many times at beautiful Lake Tahoe. Thanks for sharing.
That is Easy. They are Tanker Boots for Armored Personnel. I never really liked riding around in a coffin. I prefer to be on my own two feet. "Follow Me".
WOW!!! That is a lot of boots!!! Redwing boots rule, what is really great about them is that you can send them to the factory and have the soles built up to correct limping due to having a shorter leg. Well now I got to get more boots!! Thanks Yankee!
What do you do for kids footwear? It seems that my kids are outgrowing their footwear faster than they wear them out. I've been thinking about purchasing an additional pair, in the next size, when we are getting them new footwear. Right now we are getting the like new ones at garage sales, and putting them away.
I get a new pair of work boots every fall. I spent 200 bucks and lower on them and they never last more then a year. I do to much walking back and forth and it wears them right out lol
great collection 99 problems but boots aint one ,nice tanker boots ,i personaly wear 6 inch timberlands scotch gaurd them and they last for ever, inthese times boots are the best wear for your money...good bless god speed, happy holidays to you and yours truly...
My wife and I debate the shear number of shoes I own and whether or not its necessary. We have a little storage unit for seasonal items and as the seasons change I rotate in and out of about 15 pairs of shoes and boots. Given the climate here in Ontario I often go for a good rubber boot with a thick liner. Followed second by a high cut gore tex hiking boot. When she mentions the fact that I have so many boots and not a single pair of tennis shoes I laugh and remind her "I don't play tennis" =)
I totally agree that footwear is uber important and, as you've said, preparing with good footwear now will save you in the long run. My only critique would be trying to make items as multi-use as possible. Meaning that one can certainly have 20 pairs of boots and shoes for just about every possible situation, but it is likely that one can also have 4-5 pairs of boots/shoes that serve many different roles, saving the space & money that an extra 15 pairs would bring. Just my $.02.
@FirearmsFreak It really depends on what you have to do. You can not have a boot that you can live in 20 below or worse temps that will work in the summer. Some boots are made for little moverment and some must be able to breath and stay warm while moving. I am very active in the outdoors in many different enviroments and even states. This is how a prepare for that.
All of mine are specific for the task. I rotate back and forth during the summer so I never put my feet in damp boots. Dry boot insoles, another key to foot health.
Number 1 lesson I learned in the Army , if your feet are miserable , you will be too. DONT scrimp on boots and dont scrimp on socks. Smartwool , thorlo or better yet wigwam. And you cant go wrong with Danner , Redwing , Merrell or aslo.
Hey brother glad to see this video. I thought you forgot about it. A good memory and your funny too! I knew I would get along with you...lol Very important prep is memory. Thanks for showing us and the recommendations as well.. Red Wings are excellent work boots.....
those converse boots do they have any design crap glued to the bottom. Im looking for a replacement for my bates and i love the zipper sides. Bates ultra lites are good if you dont abuse footwear like i do but im looking for more durabilty
I always liked Mickey Mouse boots for hunting & ice fishing, I'll check out the LaCrosse though. Always looking for something better. Big fan of the gore-tex Merrell Reflex mids, have one pair I wore ever day for almost four years, soles are gone but the rest of them are still in decent shape.
Got a deal on some brand new Army Combat boots in my size. Will use them for my kick around boots. Also want to get some cool weather hikers. Wasn't kidding when I said I hate flip flops. Used to bust my big toe open with those things as a kid.
Heard the same story from a surgeon I used to work with. If his yard alarm goes off at night, he grabs his shotgun and runs outside buck naked - seriously. He said "NO ONE will stick around seeing a crazy naked guy running after them with a shotgun" LOL You are both right!
Hello Sir, I believe 1tacticalmedic came pretty close to the correct nomenclature for those boots. The correct name for those is STANKER boots. The reason for the straps is because stankers have a natural difficulty tieying shoe laces. something about repeated breech impacts to the head.
@yankeeprepper nice Tanker boots:) I prefer Cochran jump boots myself but ya know, lol. I actually love the jungle boot the best. I also love the good old Matterhorn design for the cold weather great boots and worth every penny. Good info brother, I have wanted to do a similar video but I'm glad you did this. Take care.
@minbound I know you feel the same way as I do about footwear. This is probably next to the most important piece of equipment a prepper can have besides food storage.
YP, you make me feel good. I've got about as many boots as you do and I've always been uneasy about that. Made me feel like Imelda Marcos. :) You have laid that fear to rest.
Large collection, but given where you live it must be necessary. Taker boots, still have my GI boots from 15 years ago and are still my favorite, unless I get a chance to put on the Alpine Stars. Oh, and I dig the Keens and Tevas, gotem both myself, Take care
Rick speaks the same as you when it comes to footwear! He has boots that he was issued in bootcamp that he still uses. They are good boots! He also still uses his desert boots and his arctic issue boots from his 20 year service in the Air Force. The BDUs are also good quality. Everything that he wore in the USAF is is great shape and washes and wears very well. Everyone should consider that. Thanks for this great info. Very important. Noreen : )
More! More! More! I know that you started this thread tongue-in-cheek, but you have seriously hit-on a subject that NEEDS attention. It's one thing to agree or disagree with your personal choices, but there are so many "males" out there who have not had the benefit of "man-training". Yes, a mans boots - better yet a man and his RE-SOLED boots are sexy as hell! They scream, "I have a clue, and I know what I know". Jus' Sayin'. Thanks for posting.
good vid I have been a forklift mechanic for over 20 years and red wing shoe I think are the best, they hold up to all the oil and have once saved my feet from a falling set of forks.thanks for all the great information!
The standered issued Army boot now is those 1st set of suede tan boots you showed (no zipper). Kinda pisses me off that guys going through boot camp now don't have to spit shine their boots any more. I mean that was such a big deal, but now they just have to brush the mud off and they're done.
I know Kiwi lost a ton cash when the U.S. Army made that change, lol. So no more issued boot shine kits any more. Even the U.S. Army can't avoid this nanny state pussification movement.
Good vid and great information.Eventually I'd like to get a pair of those high top black combat boots for my dad. That reminds me that I need to get a good pair of boots for myself when I get the chance. But like you said, the better quality of shoe you can afford, the longer it will last.
@LivingHistorySchool I was going to do a vid on rubber boots and chest waders in a seperate segment. In Minnesota we all jog in chest waders for endurance and smell.
Great vid Yankee. Thanks for sharing. When you got to the desert boots, I was thinking, "hmmm, those look familiar..." the Converse are my everyday boot as well, and I totally agree with you. GREAT boot! Tough, hardwearing, waterproof, breathable AND lightweight. They almost feel like running shoes! Thanks again!
@brotherscoobs Ya I heard they wear em cause the laces can melt because it gets so hot in there. It sucks cause they are the only MOS authorized to wear them, especially now that the side-zip boots arent authorized anymore.
Can you give some tips to those preppers who are so big that they cannot see their feet, let alone their footwear? Also, can you speak about alternatives to the laces - perhaps velcro? :)
@boomd1791 LOL! Yes I understand that this can be a problem for mayonaise farmers from Tennessee..... Perhaps at that point a wheel chair and some flip flops are the best alternative.
At first all the talk about having boots for decades made me feel like I wear-out boots fast , and by fast I mean like in 1 1/2.... to 2 years at the most, THEN, I saw how many pairs you got stuffed away ! Yankee, you are indeed the most prepared man I have ever seen ! ;) I love you man !
I like the sorel /w the felt lining for tree stand use. I usually hike up the mountain with hiking boots, then change into dry socks and boots (sorels).
I would rather be 99% soaking wet and have dry feet than the other way around. Ankle support is key for me as I am double jointed and no matter how much I work out my ankles they still can give out on me time to time but a good boot with support can make a big difference. I have had two pair of Vasque boots that have been worn every single day for years but sadly it's time for a new pair :( The chemicals at my work are very hard on my boots so they don't last as long...
I believe those are Tanker's boots. Leather straps instead of laces because they just won't come undone and get tangled up in a tank... not to mention theyre much easier to loosen and take off, put on etc.
The leather straps boots when riding motorcycle - smart choice over laces. You want to make sure that you stay on that bike. My preference for m/c riding are full height harness Frye boots, also made in America. Nice video.
have you ever heard of those goofy looking shoes called vibram five fingers? my wife bought a pair and said that the majority of her back pain has gone away since she started wearing them. she is a school teacher and is on her feet all day.
You have more footwear than me. What???Did you say no underwear, in the middle of the night, standing only with a shotgun in your hands and your boots on? You STILL doing that?????
Yes to the keens! I have the same pair on now in February with wool socks. Unless of course I'm heading into the woods. I have problems keeping any other footwear from smelling like death. Great video!

Seriously, one of the best videos you have ever produced.
However, without your understanding of value and craftsmanship, you would have been unable to provide the great content.
FYI: Teva sandles headquarters is Carpenteria Ca. Until they went 100% overseas - I was one of their suppliers of webbing.
I asked one of the owners early on what is the etymology of Teva? It is Hebrew for NATURE.

The straps are there because tankers refuse to get off their track...or lace their boots....LOL. great vid!

21danger21 2 months ago
@21danger21 It's a rock solid very small investment. Easy to carry in your bag. If you ever get caught in a cold snap out there or soak a boot, they will save your feet. I got caught in a cold snap in the BWCA 2 years ago and it snowed several inches. The other guys all pulled out their big boots and double socks. I put on my diver socks and my keen sandals and I had the only warm feet. Take them off at night inside out in the sleeping bag and let your feet breath.
Yankeeprepper 2 months ago 4
@Yankeeprepper And you said you were done putting prepping info online, lol! You're still a wealth of information, Yankee. I would have never, ever thought to use diving socks in the cold.
evilassaultweaponeer 2 months ago
the boots with the leather straps are tanker boots and they have the leather straps because laces will tangled in something if they get loose, they also allow for better circulation to the feet since crew men may be sitting for long period of time, and laces will melt around hot temperatures that can be given off by a tank

FirearmsFreak 2 months ago
@FirearmsFreak It really depends on what you have to do. You can not have a boot that you can live in 20 below or worse temps that will work in the summer. Some boots are made for little moverment and some must be able to breath and stay warm while moving. I am very active in the outdoors in many different enviroments and even states. This is how a prepare for that.
Yankeeprepper 2 months ago
I thought I had a lot of pairs of boots!
All of mine are specific for the task. I rotate back and forth during the summer so I never put my feet in damp boots. Dry boot insoles, another key to foot health.
Good video.

Number 1 lesson I learned in the Army , if your feet are miserable , you will be too. DONT scrimp on boots and dont scrimp on socks. Smartwool , thorlo or better yet wigwam. And you cant go wrong with Danner , Redwing , Merrell or aslo.

Hello Sir, I believe 1tacticalmedic came pretty close to the correct nomenclature for those boots. The correct name for those is STANKER boots. The reason for the straps is because stankers have a natural difficulty tieying shoe laces. something about repeated breech impacts to the head.
