Why couldnt we watch THIS version in school not the fucked up donald duck version where the ghost of christmas yet-to-come was smoking a giant ass blunt and during this scene in the version we watched, donald gets sucked into hell.
Aww, such a sad little boy... oooooh, wish he stayed away from those high notes. And to all those people who think he was saying "beach"... no, no he was not. : P
They say "Why such a lonely beach." three times in the kid version, and once in the adult version and none of these times they say "Why such a lonely bitch." for one that doesn't make any sense in context and two it's a kids movie. However you can miss hear it to bitch all you want it however will not change the fact hes saying beach all four times it's said
This is, in my opinion, the perfect song to represent the true nature of Beast Boy. The young shape-shifter may act goofy and moronic but deep down, he feels just like young Scrooge used to.
In a way, BB is one of the few titans that truly feels alone in the world. He watched his parents die, when he felt that he could somehow save them, countless numbers of guardians either died as well or left him, the other titans barely respect him and don't get me start on the Douche Patrol.
@nikkichick1999 Hey shutup. He said he knows how that kid feels. He didn't go into a huge monologue about his "woes" calm the hell down and stop trying to dish out crap you probably can't even take.
One thing I noticed is that nearly all of the dialogue (with some exceptions, and of course the songs) is verbatim Charles Dickens. I watch this every year at Christmas, along with Patrick Stewart's A Christmas Carol. Neither has an equal.
This cartoon is fantastic. I had battld and servived depression and even with family and friends around at that time ifelt like this. Thank God not anymore
Maybe this is just nostalgia talking, but I've seen SEVERAL versions of A Christmas Carol, and I find this one one of the most moving and harsh versions.
there is a book (available at amazon) that is the story behind Mr Magoos Christmas Carol. They had top notch broadway composers writing the music- and this was the very first annual Christmas animated special, opening the way to Charlie Brown, Rudolf and the rest. I make my kids watch it with me every Christmas as a family tradition. We make razzleberry pudding and sit down for the show.
it's interesting how it has always been socially acceptable for cartoons to depict the average person with four fingers instead of five... no one, not even kids question it as being strange or abnormal, it's just one of those things, i guess.
i also watched this as a child in thye 60's. it kind of dissappeared from the annual christmas cartoon line up but i have no idea why. i also think it was done very well and years later when i found it & watched it, i couldn't believe that i still remembered the words to most of the songs which really says something about the quality of the songs in this cartoon. wish they would start airing it again.
My guess is that it disappeared because Mr. Magoo was deemed to be un-PC. The notion of laughing at a man who has vision difficulties doesn't quite make it in today's society. Its a shame for two reasons. First, as you said, this film was very well done, and very true to the source material. Second, the humor of Mr. Magoo wasn't in the fact that he was near-sighted, but rather in his stubborn refusal to acknowledge that he was near-sighted and do something about it.
Mr Magoo's actual visual impairment is a metaphor for his life. He doesn't see the truth when it's staring him in the face. It's a good parody of people in our society. Many prefer to keep their heads in the sand rather than see the truth right in front of them. (People take a side & want to be right, so they don't want to look at all the facts if it means they could be wrong about something)
That's also why he was perfect for the role of Scrooge. Here, he finally sees the hard truth.

Wow I loved this cartoon the best back then,, for christmas,, what a message an yes it was so soooo sad it made me cry every time,, mister magoo, I love it, they don't make em like this anymore that's for sure
could this cartoon be referring to people that couldn't believe in God during their lives due to neglect/abandonment in childhood and loneliness in adulthood(they do not hear a voice back, no hand in reach) and in the afterlife suffers alone while all the Christians are up in heaven.(look at the graveyard) The spirit sends him back to the grave because the spirit does not believe in him now that he finally believes in the spirit. poor Ebenezer scrooge. this is sad.

one small thing i noticed, when mr. macgoo jumps in, young scrooge sings the harmony - if this was in the past, and young scrooge was alone, why is he singing harmony if there is no one to sing with? shouldnt Mr. Macgoo Be singing harmony?
Boy, you're not exaggerating when you call this the saddest cartoon song ever. The first time I heard this, I almost cried. That's saying a lot, since I don't cry too easily. Even now, the song still hits me where it hurts.
I have always thought the words to this song when I was in a lonely mood and feeling sad,I was lucky to record this show from the Disney Channel years ago.
I remember this as a child having been born in 1958 and still the sad echoes haunt me. Now at 52 and having never been married or had any children...I'M ALL ALONE IN THE WORLD
As an 11-year-old, I tape recorded this show (audio only) off the air when it was first broadcast in 1962 and listened to it many times thereafter. The music and lyrics are so good, and the voice actors -- esp. Jim Backus, of course -- seem to really be giving this project their all. A very smart and clever show that seems to stay in people's memories a long time. Thanks for posting.
Funny, I did something similiar as a kid - and you're right, the voice work and musical segments are so well crafted you can still see it in your mind's eye without the visuals.
@Orsley Glad to see I'm not the only goof who used to do that! I did it for Wizard of Oz, Cinderella, Hans Brinker and several other shows. This is still one of my fave sad songs all these years later!
This is heartbreaking even after 40+ years since I last seen it. I think the most bizzare cartoon was the the Passion Week of Christ. With Popeye playing the part of Jesus. "Where are all the Apostculees when you neegst them?" Please excuse my blasphemy, I think our Lord has a sense of humor...I hope.
