@pdim1000 I've heard that, but It never seems to really matter. I've experimented both ways. I just cant tell the difference after a couple of years of growth now.
We tried that with 50 other vines we planted... But the main problem here is we have some thick clay in places, and augering, will create a potted effect when planting vines in it, ie the roots will not leave the area where the auger dug.
you should have cut the roots down to about 6 inches

back breaking technic , better is to use a small Auger with that SM and PTO connection.
