All I know about free-floating snare drums is that you're still waiting to find one with a built in metronome. Be lucky young Michael.

I have bought 2 hohner marine bands and both of them played perfectly out of the box, I suppose its just luck with them...

Embossing the reeds is closing the gap along the length of thee reed.
Go on youtube to Elk River Harmonicas or Chris Michalek and you will see how this is done.
