the reason why the clothes dont get torn to shreds because i think the clothes is made out of the own users reitsu, if you notice you never actually see them dress, they have the clothes on, with the exception of orihime dressing into the white dress thing, meaning if an attack isnt strong enough to cute or harm the user it wont do anything to the clothes, look at the episode when ichigo fighting one of the vizards, she was kicking his ass and she cut his sleeve off, so yeah thats my opinion

Its more then a theory :) acually in the manga Retsu Unohana tells Itchigo that his robe will repair it self when his reitsu stabilizes so atleast Itchigos robe is a part of his bankai and since the bankai reflects the reistu of the wielder the rober is a part of his reitsu..dont know about the other soulreapers but ichigos robe is a reitsu thing :)
