A friend showed me this; i'm generally anything from a Delta blue to British bluesrock. But, I liked this. I usually say that I don't like jazz unless mized in with blues; well, this fits in for me! check out John Mayall's Jazz Blues fusion records!
"Jazz started to get a reputation as being immoral and many members of the older generations saw it as threatening the old values in culture and promoting the new decadent values of the Roaring 20s. Professor Henry Van Dyke of Princeton University wrote “...it is not music at all. It’s merely an irritation of the nerves of hearing, a sensual teasing of the strings of physical passion.” [wikipedia on jazz]
@pooperscoopr69 It's just musical variety, which I believe is a good thing. Although you're probably right, you're obviously sophisticated yourself, with a name like pooperscoopr69.
There was a time before mid-century that the two most popular, best-selling musicians in America were trombone players! (Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey) Some of us can hear 50 tenor saxophonists and immediately identify the instrumental "voice" of each. Whether or not the complete shift to vocals and guitars represents "progress," it was a radical shift. This was the 2nd movement of the Suite before the first riot in outdoor music festival history--Newport '56. Caused by a tenor saxophonist.
man it's ALL good i mean people have different tastes which is why that makes music such a diverse thing. It allows people to express themselves in any way they want (yes that includes rock hip hop jazz blues rap pop etc.) and saying that one is better than the other is just being intolerant and ignorant. the fact is that there is no better or worse, it just boils down to opinion.
jazz hasn't got it's roots in be bop.... be bop has roots in jazz... be bop is 60'+70' jazz... But yes... All the popular music (jazz, pop, rock, hiphop...) are based on Blues
I think young people are more open minded to different types of music more than ever thanks to the internet as it allows us to bypass the radio and make our own choices - saying young people dont know music is a little judgemental - although I can see why you might make that judgement by looking at the top 40 - but the the top 40 has allows been full of junk - its just the way - but dig a little deeper and youll see music is still very much alive
@jonytew Good for you. I started listening to jazz in my early 20's (ironically thanks to Hip Hop, which sampled freely from jazz) and it opened me up to other forms of music as well. Classical, new age, Latin American, even some eastern music. Always keep an open mind.
@jonytew Couldn't agree more. I'm 28 and love pretty much any kind of music as long as it's truly good music. It's more and more common now of days to here people say they listen to pretty much everything. Pandora is also a great tool for exploring music. Type in something you heard for the first time, create a station, and expand your musical tastes. Bouncing between Pandora and Youtube, it's truly a never ending journey of amazing music.
A magical performance by the orchestra, as they hold the slow and measured tempo with calm insouciance. Note the hint of menace in the brass ensembles as they paint a sound portrait of a man of mystery heading who knows where? In the same league as 'Jeeps Blues' another favourite from the Newport era.
just because you are older and ignorant of what good music IS being made today, (don't just listen to pop), doesn't mean you can generalize that all youngsters are devoid of taste. So yes, this is very good, but i don't need you to show it to me, i can judge for myself.

It's not about taste. People can eat excrement and exclaim...that's just my taste.
Taste uniformed by the presence of beauty, imagination and style is cannibalism, in lieu of aesthetics.

America has devolved and degenerated from Duke to the likes of Snoop Doggy-Dog.
From sophistication to incarceration.
From Blues to Hoes.
Right.

yeah it all boils down to what the Duke said: "there's only two types of music: good and bad."

@omgHOOPLA it's called being subjective... not wrong
