@willobi LOL! Yeah,..what is it about Sheffield that always gets it whenever nuclear war or any other destructive event comes about on TV or the movies? I'll bet Godzilla will destroy Sheffield next? LOL
@irvan36mm There was (is?) a major arms factory there as well as a RAF base. It gets hit in every movie because, like the narrator says, it got hit heavily in WWII and would surely get hit in any nuclear war.
British cold war civil defense has always seemed a little ridiculous to me just because of the population density, geographical size and warning time. Many medium/small cities in the US would have survived along with millions of people, but the UK would have been a wasteland.
@jkl6652 Either a 4 minute warning (UK) or 15-30 mins (US)...it's still not enough time to kiss your ass goodbye when the missiles start to fall. Civil Defense at that point wouldn't even matter.
@irvan36mm I would argue in the US it would have made a considerable difference, because there would still be considerable portions of the US left mostly intact, including a number of small cities. The urban populations would be hit the hardest, and the rural populations (with the exception of around the missile belts) the least. In the UK this would not be the case. The population density being so high in the UK, 95% of your population would be dead or fled in under a year.
@boobtuber06 small point about THREADS..it was a very accurate depition of what might have happend,if WW3 had broken out! since then the civil defence network has been disbanned and the offical attutuid is "sod you jack!"
