there are about 2-3 million americans in prison today. Yes out of the entire world we incarcerate the highest amount of our citizens on very minor offenses. That's another issue. Anyway point being there are 15 million americans on average attending college.We can go from there. And if you doubt me, I can give you the link to the FBI's website, which outlines crimes committed against persons, though I think you'll come back saying some more off the wall stuff regardless of what the stats say.
There's actually more Black men ENROLLED in college then there are Black men incarcerated. A lot of people tend to only focus on the fact that there are more Black men incarcerated then Black men LIVING ON CAMPUS.

Yes, but when people make the "Black Men in College Vs. Black Men in Jail" Comparison, they are talking about the "3 Ps", as in Prison, Parole, and Probation. So if you just focus on the number of inmates in prison or in jail, you will probably undercount the amount of black men in the "system" by quite a lot, just enough to put the number of college men over the top.

When the economy is bad, the aggregate crime rate goes up as does the rate of incarceration (for everyone). It's debatable whether a bad economy forces more people to go back to school. I suspect that bad economic conditions tend to hurt ones ability to go to college.

There are many more than 12.5% of black men incarcerated in the US right now. It's like 50-70% nationwide for violent crime.
Black male attendance in universities and college is nowhere near 12.5% on average.
Considering the fact that 15% of black males are currently incarcerated in the US, they would have to enroll at 18% higher than average just to "catch up" to 12.5 %.

In California blacks make up between 11 and 13 percent of the overall population, yet among male prison population they make up over 30% of inmates. If that's the case it's a rather awful statistic, as only 12% of the population is black... "Whites" are the majority so it makes sense they would commit a majority of the crimes.
The more important issue is that similar crimes perpetrated across a wide range of racial and class demographics are not being punished consistently and that the disparity is racial, though also class-based.

How is it flimsy? There are far more African Americans living below the poverty line per capita than there are white Americans. The amount of crime they are committing is comparable to other groupings of people who live in parts of America suffering from multi-generational poverty. there are about 2-3 million americans in prison today. Yes out of the entire world we incarcerate the highest amount of our citizens on very minor offenses. That's another issue. Anyway point being there are 15 million americans on average attending college.We can go from there. This is raw numbers of course, but going by percentages still yields a higher number of black americans in college than prison.

Yes, but when people make the "Black Men in College Vs. Black Men in Jail" Comparison, they are talking about the "3 Ps", as in Prison, Parole, and Probation. So if you just focus on the number of inmates in prison or in jail, you will probably undercount the amount of black men in the "system" by quite a lot, just enough to put the number of college men over the top.

I have heard this kind of lie before and if you look at Amnesty international, The Innocence Projects that estimate thousands of black men have been wrongfully convicted of either false crimes or misdirected suspects of crimes. We have seen it recently where a white woman claimed a hispanic male was following her.

@mee9mee9 That's an excellent question. I don't think enough time has passed for there to be a really big difference; although the trend has probably gone in the opposite direction. When the economy is bad, the aggregate crime rate goes up as does the rate of incarceration (for everyone). It's debatable whether a bad economy forces more people to go back to school. I suspect that bad economic conditions tend to hurt ones ability to go to college.

You'd do yourself a favor to simply state percentages.
There are many more than 12.5% of black men incarcerated in the US right now. It's like 50-70% nationwide for violent crime.
Black male attendance in universities and college is nowhere near 12.5% on average.
Considering the fact that 15% of black males are currently incarcerated in the US, they would have to enroll at 18% higher than average just to "catch up" to 12.5 %.
Otherwise, it could be no higher than 10.63%.

I won't argue this man's figures but I'm a 52 year old, lifelong, white Californian (Ex-law enforcement 25+ years ago).
In California blacks make up between 11 and 13 percent of the overall population, yet among male prison population they make up over 30% of inmates. I'm not saying it is, or isn't the fault of racism but if you go to typical college campus in California you do NOT see 30+ Percent black students. I don't know what these numbers truly mean, but it sure LOOKS racist...

@randy109 one of the problems with your thinking is that the number of people in prison is a lot smaller then the number of people in college. so when you compare the two communities you are not looling at two of the same thing. think 1 out of 10 people go to prison while 4 out of 10 go to college. you must compare apples to apples

If that's the case it's a rather awful statistic, as only 12% of the population is black... "Whites" are the majority so it makes sense they would commit a majority of the crimes.
The more important issue is that similar crimes perpetrated across a wide range of racial and class demographics are not being punished consistently and that the disparity is racial, though also class-based.

Of course they are. Everybody knows they are. This is not a secret. White people make up the majority of the population.
The point is that 12% of the population is committing a disproportionate amount of the crime and this is based on a wide segment of the African-American demographic being born into multi-generational poverty characterized by ignorance and lack of education. The point is also that those of a lower class are punished more severely than those with money and education.

Did you notice that they didn't have a section for Hispanics?
Dark skin Hispanics are grouped with blacks. So this increases the crimes statistics of blacks. If we remove Hispanics from blacks then blacks would commit 15% of all crimes. Not all violent crimes. But all crimes. This is only three points higher then blacks population.

A valid point that is often used, and rightly so, in attacking profiling in general. My main concern is that a focus on the racial element of criminality will not solve the crux of the problem, which is class-based, and thus racially based, as there IS a class disparity among races. Rich blacks get harder sentences that rich whites for the same crime? If you can link me to studies on this, I'll admit my fault.

It goes alot deeper than saying....They are poor so they commit more crime...The thing is they are BLACK and are CONVICTED of more crime, convicted does not mean criminal lifestyle...

How is it flimsy? There are far more African Americans living below the poverty line per capita than there are white Americans. The amount of crime they are committing is comparable to other groupings of people who live in parts of America suffering from multi-generational poverty. Overall, it's not a "black problem," it's an American problem. It's a class problem.

Right. But it's because more blacks are poor and its generational poverty, and that it is identified as racial by some white authorities who are charged with enforcing law and by blacks who profit by encouraging the belief system of victimization, for instance, clergy.
Both Cornel West and Barack Obama are correct when they say it is a zero win, false dichotomy.
The core of the problem is class. Blacks are as guilty of ascribing their race to the problem as "others" are in pointing at it.

You misinterpret what I'm saying completely. I know there are race issues, but the overwhelming focus on race as the dominant issue is a distraction from a much broader and insidious problem that can actually gain traction with a broader spectrum of voters.
The 60% statistic is extremely misleading and insulting to black people, black crime is NOT RELATIVE to the population, under those very statistics. It does not help blacks to equivocate.

Comparing the absolute number of black men in college versus prison is a useless statistic.
What is the proportion of black men in college relative to their proportion in the general population?
I'm guessing they have the lowest rate of attendance (and graduation) in the US of both gender groups as well as all racial groups.
Essentially, black men are underrepresented in college, and overrperesented in prison when compared to the rest of the population.

That's an excellent point, although it's mitigated by the fact that black men are the smallest demographic group in America in terms of race and gender (unless you count Asians or Native Americans).
