Fan of Dan's forever. Though, this song was based on Dewey's character from the movie, so it's hard to tell if it has any true meaning at all... and a lot of his own songs are very guine and heartfelt.
I love it! Some of the commentors have to remember this is an acoustic version. The song they heard in the movie was a polished studio version. Both are great but different for a reason.
Sorry to tell you not everyone who is great sings like they're on American Idol. Especially seeing as how no pop artist writes their own songs any more. Go Dan!!
He's probably a better singer then you which is why your being such a dick. If you don't like it then go away, you don't have to listen and we really don't need to hear about your bitching. As for the guy sticking up for John, so what if he is. You act like it's a bad thing. Maybe if you were a better person you'd occasionally do the same as well. Dumbass! Now go drop dead in a corner somewhere loser..
What do you mean by, "write it better?" YOu mean, "perform it better", right? I agree, I think the version John C. Reilly sung for the film came out better, much clearer, etc. BUT you have to give credit where credits due - this is Dan's song. He wrote a good one. A lot of songs don't even become recognizable until other people sing them and I'm glad the movie brought Dan's work out in the forefront.
Does he have to blow his nose or does he just suck

wow you must feel really proud for taking a side and standing up for someone
especially for mentioning american idol and stating an obvious fact
your completely right that not everyone who is great can sing like those on american idol.
there are many great people who can sing better and sing worse
of course it sure would be a lot easier if the measure of someone's greatness resided in their singing ability
my point is that i never questioned his greatness
i stated that he isnt a very good singer

originally i simply stated my opinion:
i thought his voice was too nasally
just as the guy below me did when he said that John C. Reilly sings it better
i even complimented that i did like the song
then someone came along and stared all of this
i was in a bad mood when i read it so i wrote a long winded insult
i dont take any of it back though in hindsight i would have not wasted my time responding
i just think it odd that all those comments below me say the same thing but nobody confronted them

Great song, but John C. Reilly sings it better.

yeah. too bad he didn't write it better. and his version was studio, not some live version from a club.

I was there :) It was weird knowing the lyrics while the movie played.

I think the song is for the Apatow movie Walk Hard--a folk singer/biopic parody. It would explain the Womack-esqe nature, anyway.

Ugh! This smacks of LeeAnn Womack's "I Hope You Dance". What the hell has happened to you, Bernstein?
