@awesomeguy115 Believe me, no you don't.I thought that for a while and you just have to realize you can be amazing guitar player when it's simple and plain. Not every song needs something crazy. When the time is right you'll put something together just perfectly. If you want tips, normally solo's are based in scales and arpeggios. Don't forget to do the basics!!

@ThePatrickMacalister From What I have learned in the 5 years of playing is that for soloing Patterns are VERY important. Dont worry about learning one key or one scale. just learn the basic patterns and once you know your root note you can build through the patterns. What this guy says is also a great tip for great Feeling in a solo.

And, passion usually comes with experience of the instrument. If they only care about impressing their friends now, eventually they will probably do it for the passion also.

and just play around with it

That will only come with time. Learn how to walk before you can run. Do lots of ear training. And practice jamming to chord progressions. Don't worry about playing fast, because speed and fancy stuff is a compounded result of being able to play slow, melodically, and perfectly.
