He is -so- gorgeous. I've considered raising a few of these guys when I have the space. I adore rats, and a pouched rat seems like a great experience. How much did you sell him for out of curiosity?

@EnglandBeat He was sold for 700 SEK, although at that time you'd basically have to pay to get rid of them since there were more gambians than buyers at that time. Now that there's almost no gambians left in Sweden it'd cost a hole lot more to get one - for example, I paid 2000 SEK for Anders when I got him before the big baby boom we had over here :)

I live in the US currently, and there doesn't appear to be any breeders remaining, though I do have an interest in starting up my own program on the West Coast if I manage to get my hands on a couple of these wonderful creatures. This isn't any pet rat, it's a Gambian Pouched Rat. They are very clean, but they can smell a bit. Ours smelled a bit cheesy (the only way to describe it really), but they make for lovely pets if handled from a very young age.

@KisahhRage Yep, they're not banned anymore, although you can't bring them in to the US as far as I know and the ones already there is either wild or too old for breeding... So there's still some problems, but at least it's gone in the right direction :)

I got Anders from a breeder - I'm Swedish though so I'm guessing it's a bit too far away ;)

But yes, gambians are basically loners, although some females can live together, and of course male and female. There's even some gambians that live with domestic rats. I don't really see the point in that though, seems too risky to me... But well, some do :P
