I rewatched this 3 times because richie was talking to fast. But it's worth the time. Very informative even though alot of times there are small talk, but that's what photography is. Communicating is an important aspect.
Appreciate the time and effort put into this video but after 10 minutes without some solid information I was losing the will to live! It was a bit too bogged down with chit chat, ie I'm not interested to know that you visited a friend at midnight to borrow his lens. Maybe one day when I have more time to finish this I will re-visit. Thanks for your effort though and videos like this can be really helpful.

ok numbnuts, 1- set the damn camera somewhere closer to u next time, better yet get a cameraman, we dont see shit from 100 feet.. 2- now i watched pretty much the whole thing why did u even go out to field for this video. just do it in ur apt, actually u dont need any camera or gear, u been chitchatting for 30 mins taking the exact same shot over over again lol. ironically in the beginning u were saying something about taking the same shot too many times? lmao

pocketwizard is all what u need, great video, but too much time is spend on faulty gear and nothing, U should edit out those scenes of boring nothing...
I would like to understand what Richie was looking at in the images BEFORE he started using the flash. He was making changes but the images all look the same to me. And why are the images in black and white before the flash, and then suddenly changed to full color when he began using the flash?
was that a pop-up flash he had on his camera, I couldn't see it every well, I want to get into flash photography as well, but need all the help I can get and hopefully I can see more videos from this guy richie as well.
@heestenhats vr is only used when there is not enough light and you'd need to compensate for a lower shutter speed, at higher shutter speeds not only do u not need vr but it can affect picture quality by compensating for motion blur that is not there. The best thing to do is TURN VR OFF unless needed, in this case he does not need vr because there is plenty of light and the flash itself will stop all motion.
@gaskelld flash will freeze motion, if you point it at your subject either on camera or slightly off and then expose for the ambient light, the background will still have blur from movement yet your main subject will be stopped. Its all HOW you use flash, there are more ways to use it than will fit in the comment box. Flash is just 1/4th of the picture... literally.
Excellent video idea! I had to watch the video twice but it really helped me to understand flash usage. I currently have a sb-900 and until now have not understood exactly how to use it effectively. I would definitely like to see more videos like this with flash photography and lighting.
Jared, thanks! PLEASE do more of this type of video. Learning how to work with lighting form people who know and are willing to show their mistakes is really valuable.

@JanErikEdvartsen Well, Adam and Greg and Lil - they're all good - but this is a stranger to me - it's like one of my friends suddenly has a new, stranger as friend.
@JaredPolin yeah, Jared, don't hate the Canon (insert 20th Century Fox fanfare).. I shoot Canon, I love my Canons, I sleep next to my Canon, I.. you get the picture? But I never, never, ridicule Nikon.. I never talk about how they don't make their own sensors *cough Sony does*, never mention the D700 that got busted when the ex-singer of Dragonforce threw water at me at a gig at Tavastia, Helsinki a few years back.. I never mention this stuff when people ask me for an opinion Nikon vs. Canon ;)
@JaredPolinYou're just going to use canon dslrs to shoot your videos with? Or will you be reviewing canon gear? Please reply- Love your videos for both technical content and your personality makes watching/learning fun.
@JaredPolin thats cool. I use both. Both canon and Nikon have their ups and down. Im just giving you shit bro. BTW i love my squareup credit card swipe. Thanks for the video on that.

Jared, if you read this, please stop doing this. It annoys a lot of people and it's highly unprofessional. Thanks
@BlackArmy6 i know im just giving him shit. He is a pro and he knows its not the gear that makes the photographer. Digitalrev has already proven that many times.
@orgazmo1009 Allk right, I'm not saying he's totally right, just saying not to take it to hardly :) better gear lets you do different things, if you have it, it's obviously better to use it, although creativity depends on yo totally, Nikon speedlights have a slightly more advanced systema as far as metering goes.
@appygirl970 are you asking me or Jarad? I cant answer that i dont own Nikon gear. I dont see why not. But i would upgrade my lens if i went from a d90 to a d3s. I think they are huge levels apart from one another. could be wrong as i said im not a Nikon guy.
I'm a beginner and although all the information is kind of hard to follow i got it and i learned something when taking photo outside very very informative.
nice pic @ 24:06. for beginners the additional info Richie is giving throughout the video might be confusing, but could be useful for more experienced photographers
Hi Jared! Your videos are awesome and informative but sometimes it eats my patience watching LOOOOONG videos like 20 minutes and 40 minutes.. I know that you wan't to be spontaneous but please consider the "ATTENTION SPAN" of your viewers.. THANKS! CHEERS!
I like that Fro had brought in Ritchie to show off a topic that he was unfamiliar with.
Good on you Fro to admitting that even you can learn from others.
I found this video a bit slow. Possibly because I was watching on my iPhone in bed and was really sleepy. It did take Ritchie 23 minutes before he managed to take a shot with off-camera flash. Like others I am not sure why we were comparing B&W images in ambient light with coloured images using flash. Video could have been much shorter.
Jared, this is an excellent video, please provide us with more of these behind the scene shoots. I learned so much in this one video than the 15 videos i watched before this. Thanks bud!
Another thing I might suggest to people who are looking to get into using Nikon flashes is to go with something like the sb-600's you can't use them directly as commanders, but that's not really that important. And if you want to use them with pocketwizards or something similar you can get shoe adapters to hook them up with---- You can get 2 sb-600's for the price of some of the higher end sb's. Granted they don't have quite as many features or *quite* as much power.
He wasn't in commander mode @ 22:50 was he... lol. Just guessing. Oh nvm he says he was on the wrong channel.
My own two cents ---- when using nikon cls (or any type of flash system) it gets complicated really fast. Go over your lights and get as much set up way ahead of time settings wise.
@smwilhelm you don't need VR if you are shooting at 500th of a second and the flash duration is very very very short so it freezes the action so there will be no motion blur and no visible camera shake and it eats the battery and slows things down a bit.
Hope that there will be alot more on the subject (Strobist), it was really instructive but not so creative, really formal serious portrait. Creative off flash would be really cool.
Thanks a lot for producing/sharing this, it's really appreciated !
Well done Jared. Your best video to date. Richie slipped so many little tips in this video. I think it is a great way forward for you to bring in experts on many photographic topics and show your learning process to everyone. You are a good photographer and a great presenter but you personally haven't got a full command of more advanced photographic knowledge . Comtinuing to do the beginner stuff yourself whilst showing your own more advanced learning with experts will give you a real edge :~)
My 7D has Canon's version of that Auto flash wireless system. Not a lot of Canon cameras have it. But yeah, the "Dark Side" has it Richie. Most pros dont use it anyway, manual flash all the way!
Definitely do more vids about flash with this guy Jared. On camera flash too! PLEASE! lol..... for real. because the d3100 is my only body. Great vid. I'ma watch it again later
The description sounds confusing. I guess your friend was going a bit fast there.

@smwilhelm I'm assuming because his shutter speed was so fast, but I'm not sure.

I've really appreciated this video !
