  • The description sounds confusing. I guess your friend was going a bit fast there.

  • More videos on flash please.

  • Nice video Fro! You really can make some money doing that...

  • When you pop up the photos on the screen, are they´re the RAW files or did you edit them already???

  • @93Delphi they are the edited files from the RAW.

  • great information :)

  • Why are they wearing pants when its 105?!?

  • 5 minute portrait 40 minute video. if you weren't Jared Polin i'd be mad. however you are Jared Polid so i am not mad.

  • This videos should definitely last max 8 mins

  • do i have to use a diffuser because my external diffuser is broken thanks to my maid

  • i didn't catch the camera settings... what was the camera setting anyone?

  • I rewatched this 3 times because richie was talking to fast. But it's worth the time. Very informative even though alot of times there are small talk, but that's what photography is. Communicating is an important aspect.

  • thank you for this great vid!!!

  • Appreciate the time and effort put into this video but after 10 minutes without some solid information I was losing the will to live! It was a bit too bogged down with chit chat, ie I'm not interested to know that you visited a friend at midnight to borrow his lens. Maybe one day when I have more time to finish this I will re-visit. Thanks for your effort though and videos like this can be really helpful.

  • Love this video, thanks

  • 5 mine prtrait/ yeh 41 minutes long?

  • nice video love how he explains everything he was doing in the phoot shoot one question the umbrella you was shooting with what size was the umbrella was you shooting with love all the advice you was giving thanks again fellow photographer jb3

  • Thanks for sharing! I appreciate the fact that you post these videos. Sure, sometimes it may be something a person already knows.....but that's ok. I find in most videos, if I listen with an open mind, I'll pick up something I didn't know. Again, thanks for taking the time to share.

  • ok numbnuts, 1- set the damn camera somewhere closer to u next time, better yet get a cameraman, we dont see shit from 100 feet.. 2- now i watched pretty much the whole thing why did u even go out to field for this video. just do it in ur apt, actually u dont need any camera or gear, u been chitchatting for 30 mins taking the exact same shot over over again lol. ironically in the beginning u were saying something about taking the same shot too many times? lmao

  • This was truly a great tutorial. I felt like I was there myself asking the questions would want answered. Keep them coming!! :o)

  • Hey Jared is there a part 2 to this already? This was so helpful! I hope there will be more of this. I totally forgot my D7000 could fire my SB 700 off camera. I wish I saw watched this video sooner I wouldn't have bought my cheap transceiver just yet.

  • 5 Min Portrait ? Are you drunk ?

  • I've got a Paul C Buff 13 foot air cushioned stand. $100, GREAT stand.

  • what if you can't use your camera as a commander?

  • Great video! Thanks!

  • He talks about buying 100pack AA Batteries. Which one from Duracell?

  • Cheers dude! I actually like the fuck ups as it shows you all the things to think of while shooting no matter how simple! Thanks again fro

  • is there a wide angle lens for dx size cameras ? i mean with out the 1.5x ratio

  • "I shot a guy, the head of Homeland Security." Nice. Context is everything! Haha.

  • Jared! Please come out with or direct me to a good speedlight buyer's guide! I went as far as to look to Ken Rockwell for advise, that's how desperate I am! What's compatible, what features are actually important, what can do HSS. Please Jared!

  • pocketwizard is all what u need, great video, but too much time is spend on faulty gear and nothing, U should edit out those scenes of boring nothing...

  • pocketwizard is all what u need

  • lmao.. now taking it past the shoot. what else would you do for PP?

  • what batteries do you use for your flashes?

  • You two make a great team. Very infomative, and its nice to see other photographers perspectives. One of my favorite videos!

  • I would like to understand what Richie was looking at in the images BEFORE he started using the flash. He was making changes but the images all look the same to me. And why are the images in black and white before the flash, and then suddenly changed to full color when he began using the flash?

  • This was the longest 5 minutes of my life!

  • was that a pop-up flash he had on his camera, I couldn't see it every well, I want to get into flash photography as well, but need all the help I can get and hopefully I can see more videos from this guy richie as well.

  • thanks bud!

  • What flash gel did Richie used? I watched the whole video and i don't remember where was that part :(.

  • 42 minute portrait...Haha Thanks for this video Fro!

  • @timvanurk Ah I see.. makes sense! Thank you.

  • Why didnt he use VR?. VR is always good to have on in my mind?? am i right?

  • @heestenhats vr is only used when there is not enough light and you'd need to compensate for a lower shutter speed, at higher shutter speeds not only do u not need vr but it can affect picture quality by compensating for motion blur that is not there. The best thing to do is TURN VR OFF unless needed, in this case he does not need vr because there is plenty of light and the flash itself will stop all motion.

  • @zamanakhan Oh never thought about VR as a bad thing:). But i understand now and it make sense:)

  • @zamanakhan So helpful I have been using the vr all the while my bad

  • @gaskelld flash will freeze motion, if you point it at your subject either on camera or slightly off and then expose for the ambient light, the background will still have blur from movement yet your main subject will be stopped. Its all HOW you use flash, there are more ways to use it than will fit in the comment box. Flash is just 1/4th of the picture... literally.

  • @heestenhats the only time to not have it on is if your on a tripod unless you have VR II then your golden

  • @heestenhats vr affects picture quality as it has a moving element, if you have right shutter speed try not to use vr

  • @heestenhats I was wondering the same thing.

  • @heestenhats

no, on fast shutter speeds the vr make the pictures blury, ok i heard this, but don't know.

    try it out!

  • pap-are-at-zie. haha. :)

  • Excellent video idea! I had to watch the video twice but it really helped me to understand flash usage. I currently have a sb-900 and until now have not understood exactly how to use it effectively. I would definitely like to see more videos like this with flash photography and lighting.

  • The guy doesn't explain well...

  • at 35:19 why was the top right corner of the image cut of?

  • @TommyPh500d that wasn't a part cut of, it was cuz he captured the umbrella

  • @TommyPh500d It seems like he got the umbrella inside the frame.

  • @TommyPh500d i think it's part of the umbrella

  • Jared, thanks! PLEASE do more of this type of video. Learning how to work with lighting form people who know and are willing to show their mistakes is really valuable.

  • Can't believe I watched the whole thing haha.

  • I know you're a pro and almost knows everything jared but isn't nice if you learn something new from others as well. you look like a student learning new things in here.

  • 5 min portrait in 41 minutes :) nice vid :)

  • Nicely done.

  • Was that a fart i heard at 36:48 ? dear so funny and more so as there was no reaction

  • @Daffy6262 LOL no that was Jared saying mmmmmm :p

  • @Daffy6262 No, it's Jared saying: "Mmmmhm!"

  • I prefer to watch Jared going solo, not some annoying co-photographers being there with him :(

  • @JanErikEdvartsen Well, Adam and Greg and Lil - they're all good - but this is a stranger to me - it's like one of my friends suddenly has a new, stranger as friend.

  • One of the best videos you've done jared, very very helpful!

I hope you'll continue doing those kind of videos about flash photography and all that stuff :)

  • stopped watching when he said turning to the darkside (canon) thats photography racism.

  • @orgazmo1009 ha, i will have canon gear soon enough to make videos with.

  • @JaredPolin yeah, Jared, don't hate the Canon (insert 20th Century Fox fanfare).. I shoot Canon, I love my Canons, I sleep next to my Canon, I.. you get the picture? But I never, never, ridicule Nikon.. I never talk about how they don't make their own sensors *cough Sony does*, never mention the D700 that got busted when the ex-singer of Dragonforce threw water at me at a gig at Tavastia, Helsinki a few years back.. I never mention this stuff when people ask me for an opinion Nikon vs. Canon ;)

  • @markuzio117 and please have a sense of humor people.. I just took offense (just this much) of his "Dark Side" comment :D Love these vids. Love em'.

  • Comment removed

  • @JaredPolinYou're just going to use canon dslrs to shoot your videos with? Or will you be reviewing canon gear? Please reply- Love your videos for both technical content and your personality makes watching/learning fun.

  • @JaredPolin thats cool. I use both. Both canon and Nikon have their ups and down. Im just giving you shit bro. BTW i love my squareup credit card swipe. Thanks for the video on that.

  • oh and Jared btw i didnt stop watching, just took a break and put my head down and cried lol.

  • @JaredPolin nooooo NIkon for life!

  • Comment removed

  • @orgazmo1009 +1 wiles canon has the same system!!

  • @orgazmo1009 I totally agree and that's one things i really hate about Jared's videos. people are already fighting over this silly thing and we again see this in Jared's videos. It's not even funny.

Jared, if you read this, please stop doing this. It annoys a lot of people and it's highly unprofessional. Thanks

  • @orgazmo1009 its too late for you, you stuck in the dark side. Terese no going back.

  • @orgazmo1009 Lol it's beacuse he acts as Darth Vader in some of his videos, and in those he uses Canon, no racism implied :)

  • @BlackArmy6 i know im just giving him shit. He is a pro and he knows its not the gear that makes the photographer. Digitalrev has already proven that many times.

  • @orgazmo1009 Allk right, I'm not saying he's totally right, just saying not to take it to hardly :) better gear lets you do different things, if you have it, it's obviously better to use it, although creativity depends on yo totally, Nikon speedlights have a slightly more advanced systema as far as metering goes.

  • @orgazmo1009 LOL

  • @orgazmo1009 FOLLOW THE LIGHT AND COME FROM THE DARK SIDE NIKON ALL THE WAY

  • @appygirl970 its just a brand name nothing more.

  • Respond to this video... Thanks for the video I knew about the VR but works great form horse back photography

  • Respond to this video... will my nikon lens that fit my D90 nikon fit D3S Nikon? planning on getting this Maga Cam also I have the 600 flash

  • @appygirl970 are you asking me or Jarad? I cant answer that i dont own Nikon gear. I dont see why not. But i would upgrade my lens if i went from a d90 to a d3s. I think they are huge levels apart from one another. could be wrong as i said im not a Nikon guy.

  • @orgazmo1009 lol kid

  • @orgazmo1009 My goodness do we really need to buy every brand? Its like Mac and PC. Who cares

  • @infringinator I wasnt being the product racist. No dont buy every brand but dont talk shit about the brand you dont use. Simple as that.

  • @orgazmo1009 Don't be so sensitive. I use Canon and that's not insulting what he said

  • @vanizg to each his own. I get tired of hearing canon this, nikon that. It gets old.

  • Great video Jared, I thought 40 minutes was fine, lots of info from the pros ;) thank you!

  • I thought for using a flash you had dark eyes in 90% of the frames. Only when you were looking into the flash were the results optimal. <-My opinion.

  • jared, no offense, but 40 minutes of a video is just too long ;s

  • @crazyasspusshole then dont watch it. Simple solution

  • I'm a beginner and although all the information is kind of hard to follow i got it and i learned something when taking photo outside very very informative.

  • Where is Greg??

  • Yes, more flash tutorials :)

  • nice pic @ 24:06. for beginners the additional info Richie is giving throughout the video might be confusing, but could be useful for more experienced photographers

  • Hi Jared! Your videos are awesome and informative but sometimes it eats my patience watching LOOOOONG videos like 20 minutes and 40 minutes.. I know that you wan't to be spontaneous but please consider the "ATTENTION SPAN" of your viewers.. THANKS! CHEERS!

  • My head is spinning from all the details. Nonetheless, it's great information.

  • I do like the way you are going with this video though and look forward to more of them.

  • I like that Fro had brought in Ritchie to show off a topic that he was unfamiliar with.

Good on you Fro to admitting that even you can learn from others.

I found this video a bit slow. Possibly because I was watching on my iPhone in bed and was really sleepy. It did take Ritchie 23 minutes before he managed to take a shot with off-camera flash. Like others I am not sure why we were comparing B&W images in ambient light with coloured images using flash. Video could have been much shorter.

  • please do more videos like this one!

  • This video really inspired me to try something like this, so today I bought myself

Manfrotto 1051BAC Mini compact Air Cushion

    Lastolite Tilthead shoe lock

    HEDLER Umbrella "white-transparent" 80cm

Let the games begin! :D thank you!

  • This was awesome. I learned a lot. Loved you as Jared now love you as a teacher.

  • So i guess this is aimed at the Pro's "Fro".Bit long and drawn out for me.

  • Exactly what i have been looking for, top work

  • Good information man I'm a student and this helps me a lot. Thanks Jared

  • 41 Min Portrait ;-)

  • which Dslr u used to record the 41 mins long session?

  • @Daideepya He uses a Nikon D7000 probably with a 128gb SDXC card

  • you need a camera man :)

  • Jared, this is an excellent video, please provide us with more of these behind the scene shoots. I learned so much in this one video than the 15 videos i watched before this. Thanks bud!

  • I thought my internet was running slowly until I realized the 5min portrait was 41min long lol

  • Look for somthing. Look for somthing ! ... and then... steel it !

  • why does that look like prospect, or central park in nyc......

  • Great video!!! and thank you.

  • My lawn mower was stolen and the I think they were driving a car or truck or both put together. Have you seen them?

  • Great video Jared!

  • froknowsphoto stepping out of the box, good job. :)

  • @james07jamesjames What do you mean by "stepping out of the box"?

  • @JanErikEdvartsen becoming the model and not the photographer. following instructions instead of giving them

  • Good video, been recently looking at upping my lighting skills!

  • Another thing I might suggest to people who are looking to get into using Nikon flashes is to go with something like the sb-600's you can't use them directly as commanders, but that's not really that important. And if you want to use them with pocketwizards or something similar you can get shoe adapters to hook them up with---- You can get 2 sb-600's for the price of some of the higher end sb's. Granted they don't have quite as many features or *quite* as much power.

  • richie is a dick!!

  • He wasn't in commander mode @ 22:50 was he... lol. Just guessing. Oh nvm he says he was on the wrong channel.

My own two cents ---- when using nikon cls (or any type of flash system) it gets complicated really fast. Go over your lights and get as much set up way ahead of time settings wise.

  • I learn about flash in school today then come home and heres a review kinda =D

  • why would richie want to have the vr off? also, can you make a video about the different ways to hook up flashes to cameras?

  • Comment removed

  • Too much equipment...lol. i would hate to carry that crap around. Much love jared

  • Does Richie have a FB page, flickr page or official website?

  • Why VR off?

  • @smwilhelm you don't need VR if you are shooting at 500th of a second and the flash duration is very very very short so it freezes the action so there will be no motion blur and no visible camera shake and it eats the battery and slows things down a bit.

  • @smwilhelm I'm assuming because his shutter speed was so fast, but I'm not sure.

  • What was this filmed on? it's Looong. Nice vid

  • Like several others, I would like detail info on the clamps and J hooks he used to weight the stand.

  • I've really appreciated this video !

Hope that there will be alot more on the subject (Strobist), it was really instructive but not so creative, really formal serious portrait. Creative off flash would be really cool.

Thanks a lot for producing/sharing this, it's really appreciated !

    CYA !

  • Well done Jared. Your best video to date. Richie slipped so many little tips in this video. I think it is a great way forward for you to bring in experts on many photographic topics and show your learning process to everyone. You are a good photographer and a great presenter but you personally haven't got a full command of more advanced photographic knowledge . Comtinuing to do the beginner stuff yourself whilst showing your own more advanced learning with experts will give you a real edge :~)

  • you should do more of these. I find these videos extremely helpful

  • What state are they in?

  • i have a d3100 with cactus v4 triggers and a vivitar 285hv. they work perfect

  • best ! simply

  • please may you repost the difference between on and off flash both in colour ? :)

  • Comment removed

  • It's your best intro EVER !! :P

  • My 7D has Canon's version of that Auto flash wireless system. Not a lot of Canon cameras have it. But yeah, the "Dark Side" has it Richie. Most pros dont use it anyway, manual flash all the way!

  • Flash makes the pictures boom. I always shoot with flash.

  • 1080 is up :D

  • PocketWizard's bro.

  • thanx guys, 40mins of pro advise

  • Good.

  • how can I know more about Richie? facebook, twitter, fanpage, website?

  • 3483,3474,3489...BOSS WORK!!

  • What's Richie's channel?... Cya!

  • awesome video :D

  • Why make sure VR is off ?

  • Definitely do more vids about flash with this guy Jared. On camera flash too! PLEASE! lol..... for real. because the d3100 is my only body. Great vid. I'ma watch it again later

  • What camera and lens did Richie use?

  • Thanks for a great video Jared,
