@OTKP You are right we shouldn't lock people up for minor things like weed possession, but why give weed possessors probation or house arrest?
Here's a better idea: let's not give them any penalty because they have done nothing wrong! Possessing a non-toxic weed harms no one, and CAN'T be considered a crime.
And yes you are right that hardcore criminals should have first priority.

Hey Cenk? Read the book In the Belly of the Beast, by Jack Henry Abbott. Abbot was a career criminal and convict. As much as I disagree with the draconian drug laws in this country, I disagree with Ana's idea of just releasing people from jail who are serving time for small-time drug offenses. The laws need to be changed, absolutely, but those people did knowingly break the law when it was the law; reform the laws and reform our "correctional" prison system into a more effective one. You're going to create a lot more problems if you suddenly let a bunch of people out of jail for crimes they committed.
People should be arrested for weed. last time i checked its illegal DUH. robbery against the law. murder against the law. until they make it legal or whatever then you should be arrested its that simple
the only people who should be in prison for non-violent crimes are drug dealers who are distributing drugs that are all ready available for pharmaceutical needs. the users themselves no, let them go, and the dealers who are distributing drugs which are already available, well, five years max.
@MrMikailus well, i certainly agree with the legalization of marijuana, decriminalization of cocaine, salvia in the states in which it is illegal, and slacker regulations on OTC drugs. but i dont support the decriminalization of heroin, crack, pcp, etc. those drugs only cause negative effects, maybe not for the economy (if decrim'ed), but they do hurt people in more ways than one.
Whats wrong with this country? When will they learn that they will never win the war on drugs. We're just dumping tons of cash into a pointless war. Legalise it. Drugs are always going to be here if you like it or not. But if you legalise and regulate and make it safe, then your on the right track. And plenty of countries are doing this and guess what? It works. But the US, of course, won't take this route. Why? Cos it makes sense and anymore this country is all about not making sense.
You guys know that if ur not tough on crime pple will commit more crimes right? I agree pple who do drugs shouldn't be put in prison as long as they don't commit any crimes while doing the drug.
If the State or Federal Government sees fit to prosecute and sentence an American citizen, it is up to the same institutions to provide for their incarceration within Constitutional guidelines.
How can any Legislature pass it's responsibility for the situation onto another state, much less a for-profit institution?
With "State's Rights" come State Responsibilities.
New law for being caught with pot $50 fine that's it. no jail and if you can't pay the law will come and repo all your snacks and weed that is all...!
Imagine the insane amount of a society´s money being WASTED through the corrupt private-prison-system. I want to see those, who oppose higher taxes for the rich tackle that subject, as well. Strange, that I do not see them anywhere around when this issue comes up. "Someone gets rich - it´s time to celebrate". No matter if HOW the money was made is DEEPLY immoral!
@taxiuniversum The money wasted on private prisons is nothing in comparisons to the wars the United States is waging around the world. Why not resolve that?
Private prisons and "American" (= corporate-initiated) wars are but two aspects of only ONE problem: That America is in the hands of corporations, pulling the elected politicians through the arena on a nose ring. This is slavery 2.0, and this time around, it is less racist, because EVEN WHITE people get exploited. ;-)
Just "ending the wars" will not be enough, for two reason: First, this has happened so many times before. The American Public brought the troops back, and only a few years later the propaganda machine had the public back to support yet another war. And another. And another.
Secondly, as someone explained, America is ENTIRELY DEPENDENT on wars as a way to "create jobs". Some people claim that up to 40% of America´s job are linked to the military. So this demands for HUGE changes!
@taxiuniversum adadadadada yeah right. end wars. nobody wants us, nobody invited us, nobody needs us except for our comparatively high level of technology. The world doesn't need the U.S. to run things
Personally, I think that until the Second World War, it was still a different story with the military. Then, the U.S. first became entirely paranoid about "communism" (maybe because they hired nazi liars like Reinhard Gehlen as consultants), then sold the entire country to the interests of companies like Halliburton, Blackwater and other war profiteers. And they will always find someone who "invites" America, to "liberate" some country and so forth...
ALEC should be unconstitutional. So called non-partisan org my ass. They actually write laws then have special "get aways" with politicians. When the politicians leave these luxurious ALEC "conventions" they have in their hot little hands laws that were written by ALEC. Laws like "Three Strikes" for example.
How about we just make drug use, possession and minor sales not a crime, that would empty out about 40% of jails and prisons. Oh wait, I forgot, the justice system is now a "for profit" system and these sensible changes would ruin that.
@FumingPoliticalPunk "Socialism is an economic system in which the means of production are publicly or commonly owned and controlled cooperatively, or a political philosophy advocating such a system. As a form of social organization, socialism is based on co-operative social relations and self-management; relatively equal power-relations and the reduction or elimination of hierarchy in the management of economic and political affairs." There really is no excuse. Google is your friend.
@SuperLonelyLife. You're right that drugs are illegal for a reason. And that reason is because government can't make money offf them. Cigarettes and alcohol are worse than most drugs but are legal because government makes money off them.
not that I am for, for profit prisons, but how come private companies can make a profit and our government run prisons can't? I mean wtf, if anyone need to make a profit from prisons it is our indebted government.
government pays the private companies. If it ran the prison themselves, they would be paying themselves. Either way - it is an expenditure. If you privatize the prison system, you'll create an incentiv-based system to create more prisoners by lobbying for laws that give you more prisoners.
If it is government run there will be no such incentiv.
That is the fundamental problem conservative dogma has against government.
it is very stupid how we have laws and yet the stupid laws puts someone who smokes pot in jail and takes out the rapist! or better "Casey Anthony" can get away with murder!
@FumingPoliticalPunk The better word is PRIVATE. PRIVATE + PRISON = private prison. A socialistic prison would do the task at cost, not with a profit margin in mind. I'm sure your smart enough to get it, but want to pretend in this case it isn't something called privatization. You want to link it to a word like soicialistic because you want to cut from the privatization failures list. Like Blackwater or Contractors in Iraq.
Might I ask you Americans how the fuck commercial companies makes money on running something without any kind of profit incentive at all?
.
I mean, do they rob the convicts and seize their homes as payment?
Where do they get their money from?
As somebody who lives in a "eurosocialist hellhole" I am very keen to know how who the convicts, who are the customers of the services offered, pay for it.
.
The idea of private prisons is utterly repulsive as it is with corporate bribes and corruption.
if you get arrested for weed you are a fool. its against the law its that simple. doesnt matter whether it should be legal or not face is its against the law therefore if your caught your fool
@knucklez92 First, learn how to write before making a statement. And 2nd, learn to think for yourself. Stop spitting out bullshit that your mom and dad taught you and learn to do your own research on issues you know nothing about.
@plushman79 learn how to spell. its the internet. Get a life and stop bloging on the computer 24/7. you need a education do something better with your life instead of sitting behind a keyboard talking shit. Get life insults are for children grow up
@knucklez92 No you see, this is the thing. I have an education, and thats my whole point. And from the look of the dribble that you write, an education is something in which you desperately need. Trust me, it doesn't take long to spot idiots and then correcting them. I don't need to spend a life doing it.
@deveousdevil So the government gives money for all the things public prisons need it for, such as food, security, electricity, heat, and so on, plus money for the ceo's to shove into their pockets? ..... that doesnt sound efficient at all
it's designed for inefficiency. if they were efficient then prisoners wouldn't have such high recidivism rates. the goal is arrest people on bullshit reasons, make their lives miserable, let them go into society fucked up and anti-social, arrest them again and on and on the cycle goes, meanwhile our money is stolen, society if filled with more criminals and more miserable ppl.
@deveousdevil Yes but there is financially inefficient and purpose inefficient. And these private prisons are inefficient in both senses. My question is now, why are we wasting money on private prisons when its cheaper to just have a state prison?
@deveousdevil Why is it legal to have corrupt politians? Why isnt there a law to punish politicians that take what is essentially bribes? Preferably with at least ending their careers or prefereably by capital punishment
@FumingPoliticalPunk When a company is keeping their profit margin in mind. There isn't anything socialistic about it. You "just looked into" a huge issue that varies from state to state? How much research did you do in hours? They are called PRIVATE prisons..... so how is it you disputing they aren't really public or private. What word would you use other then "socialistic". Which is a poor choice of words at best, probably more a way to dismiss the critics of privatization.
What TYT and friends dont tell you is that prosecutors use drug laws to convict violent criminals because proving someone has drugs is easier than proving they kicked someones head in. US prisons arent filled with people who smoked some weed but are up standing citizens.
@DigitalDistribution Ease of a prosecutors job being as a reason for people to be in jail is an even more disgusting idea. Private prisons take least serious offenders and the more violent and serious offenders go to a state prison. Why are we paying a 3rd party to take care of the easiest prisoners we have? Also when you send these people to jail you sometimes make them worse then they came out, they have a record now and cannot find employment, so they go back to crime.
@FumingPoliticalPunk when our public water is sold off to private interests, you will be claiming it's socialistic as well. privatize everything and don't take any responsibility with your free market ideals.
Everyone has great ideas to the end the prison culture in this country. Unfortunately, they will never be implemented as long as the crime rate is as low as it is (even with the recession) in this country.
@gj804 They wont be implemented because the billion dollars industry of private prisons pay lobbyists to support policies that increase the private prison population.
@aloudninja he's getting fatter off of eating republicans alive. That's a republican for you though. Don't criticize their arguments or their words. Bring up so non related issue about the traits of the person to distract from the issue they talk about. It's ok though no one expects you to be capable of even having a coherent discussion on any serious topic other then what color your velcro shoes you'll pick out.
@FumingPoliticalPunk um...... prison labor and the privatization of prisons, these are but two of the many symptoms of capitalism, a system designed to maximize the profits of the few at the expense of the overwhelming majority
You legalize these things you get rid of risky drug dealers in regards to weed, and you make hookers more safe and clean. These two things...will happen regardless of legal or not...but you make it alot more safe and clean if its legal. Theres nothing to lose...oh U.S.A Government...how you depress me in your stupidness.
Well what can they do? They can't early release them people will rage. They can't build new prisons because California is broke and if they raise taxes people will rage.
They should change laws and stop locking up drug addicts, but they won't because then republicans will run millions in ads saying they are soft on crime. Can't win for losing.
Cenk, they do it in a very rational way. They let loose the most egregious offenders they can get away with so that they can incite the public outcry needed to up their funding. You're easily manipulated, Cenk. :/
@computerjero Actually, I doubt Ana was thinking rationally. At 0:20, she says the prisoners will be transfered to PRIVATE facilities. Then, at 1:10 she reads out the statement that says inmates will be transferred to PUBLIC out of state prisons. Since I have never been to prison, I can't say for sure, but it sounds to me like Ana and Cenk contradicted themselves and basically the whole point of this entire video.

Why? Cos it makes sense and anymore this country is all about not making sense.
mrselfdestruct23 6 months ago
You guys know that if ur not tough on crime pple will commit more crimes right? I agree pple who do drugs shouldn't be put in prison as long as they don't commit any crimes while doing the drug.

If the State or Federal Government sees fit to prosecute and sentence an American citizen, it is up to the same institutions to provide for their incarceration within Constitutional guidelines.
How can any Legislature pass it's responsibility for the situation onto another state, much less a for-profit institution?
With "State's Rights" come State Responsibilities.

No matter if HOW the money was made is DEEPLY immoral!
taxiuniversum 6 months ago
@taxiuniversum The money wasted on private prisons is nothing in comparisons to the wars the United States is waging around the world. Why not resolve that?
cpufightclub 6 months ago
@ cpufightclub:
Private prisons and "American" (= corporate-initiated) wars are but two aspects of only ONE problem: That America is in the hands of corporations, pulling the elected politicians through the arena on a nose ring. This is slavery 2.0, and this time around, it is less racist, because EVEN WHITE people get exploited. ;-)
taxiuniversum 6 months ago
@taxiuniversum yeah thats nice. lets focus on ending the wars to increase revenue.
cpufightclub 6 months ago
@ cpufightclub:
Just "ending the wars" will not be enough, for two reason: First, this has happened so many times before. The American Public brought the troops back, and only a few years later the propaganda machine had the public back to support yet another war. And another. And another.
Secondly, as someone explained, America is ENTIRELY DEPENDENT on wars as a way to "create jobs". Some people claim that up to 40% of America´s job are linked to the military. So this demands for HUGE changes!
taxiuniversum 6 months ago
@taxiuniversum adadadadada yeah right. end wars. nobody wants us, nobody invited us, nobody needs us except for our comparatively high level of technology. The world doesn't need the U.S. to run things
cpufightclub 6 months ago
@ cpufightclub:

Laws like "Three Strikes" for example.
deandake 6 months ago

Google is your friend.

not that I am for, for profit prisons, but how come private companies can make a profit and our government run prisons can't? I mean wtf, if anyone need to make a profit from prisons it is our indebted government.
fatlazyidiotamerican 6 months ago
@fatlazyidiotamerican
government pays the private companies. If it ran the prison themselves, they would be paying themselves. Either way - it is an expenditure. If you privatize the prison system, you'll create an incentiv-based system to create more prisoners by lobbying for laws that give you more prisoners.
If it is government run there will be no such incentiv.
That is the fundamental problem conservative dogma has against government.

underbjorn 6 months ago
@FumingPoliticalPunk The better word is PRIVATE. PRIVATE + PRISON = private prison. A socialistic prison would do the task at cost, not with a profit margin in mind. I'm sure your smart enough to get it, but want to pretend in this case it isn't something called privatization. You want to link it to a word like soicialistic because you want to cut from the privatization failures list. Like Blackwater or Contractors in Iraq.

I mean, do they rob the convicts and seize their homes as payment?
Where do they get their money from?
As somebody who lives in a "eurosocialist hellhole" I am very keen to know how who the convicts, who are the customers of the services offered, pay for it.

The idea of private prisons is utterly repulsive as it is with corporate bribes and corruption.

How exactly do prisons make money?
Gr4yW0rld 6 months ago
@Gr4yW0rld
PRIVATE prisons get money from the government. funny how they consider that to be "free market"
deveousdevil 6 months ago
@deveousdevil So the government gives money for all the things public prisons need it for, such as food, security, electricity, heat, and so on, plus money for the ceo's to shove into their pockets? ..... that doesnt sound efficient at all
Gr4yW0rld 6 months ago
@Gr4yW0rld
it's designed for inefficiency. if they were efficient then prisoners wouldn't have such high recidivism rates. the goal is arrest people on bullshit reasons, make their lives miserable, let them go into society fucked up and anti-social, arrest them again and on and on the cycle goes, meanwhile our money is stolen, society if filled with more criminals and more miserable ppl.
deveousdevil 6 months ago
@deveousdevil Yes but there is financially inefficient and purpose inefficient. And these private prisons are inefficient in both senses. My question is now, why are we wasting money on private prisons when its cheaper to just have a state prison?
Gr4yW0rld 6 months ago
@Gr4yW0rld because the politicians who vote to fund these private prisons are corrupt scum...it's not as complex as you're making it.
deveousdevil 6 months ago
@deveousdevil Why is it legal to have corrupt politians? Why isnt there a law to punish politicians that take what is essentially bribes? Preferably with at least ending their careers or prefereably by capital punishment

deveousdevil 6 months ago

Gr4yW0rld 6 months ago
@FumingPoliticalPunk When a company is keeping their profit margin in mind. There isn't anything socialistic about it. You "just looked into" a huge issue that varies from state to state? How much research did you do in hours? They are called PRIVATE prisons..... so how is it you disputing they aren't really public or private. What word would you use other then "socialistic". Which is a poor choice of words at best, probably more a way to dismiss the critics of privatization.
Bigbird5553 6 months ago
What TYT and friends dont tell you is that prosecutors use drug laws to convict violent criminals because proving someone has drugs is easier than proving they kicked someones head in. US prisons arent filled with people who smoked some weed but are up standing citizens.
DigitalDistribution 6 months ago
@DigitalDistribution Ease of a prosecutors job being as a reason for people to be in jail is an even more disgusting idea. Private prisons take least serious offenders and the more violent and serious offenders go to a state prison. Why are we paying a 3rd party to take care of the easiest prisoners we have? Also when you send these people to jail you sometimes make them worse then they came out, they have a record now and cannot find employment, so they go back to crime.

drunk drivers usually overestimate their driving abilities, stoned drivers don´t.
alcohol is a neurotoxin, thc isn´t.
in fact in some situations drivers who are under the influence of cannabis
react even better, than completely sober drivers. of course, it depends on
the strain of cannabis, you consumed before driving, but in general i would
say, that you can not compare alcohol to cannabis in terms of driving a car.
alcohol is much, much, muuuuuch more dangerous.
and btw, the case,.
