They probably would have done fine with it if they just waited a couple more years, when NBC rebounded with Cheers, etc. But then, if Metromedia kept it, it would have become a Fox O&O in 1986. NBC would probably have ended up on KMSP 9, after getting booted off their affiliate for the second time.
From what I've heard, this station wasn't run so well as an NBC affiliate when Metromedia still owned it. Probably the reason they decided to sell to Gannett, so they could concentrate on what they did best, running independent stations.
Thank you to whoever saved this newscast. It brings back memories. I was a newbie news cameraperson at that station. Things were so primitive then.
To help answer comments here: Gannett bought the station in 1983 and poured millions into it - including bringing in Paul Magers and Diana Pierce. When John Bachman was the anchor, our staff was only about 20-25 people. It tripled after Gannett. NewsCenter was not mandated but it was popular - like "Action News and Eyewitness News".
No. I'm in Seattle. A footnote: Our weekend anchor at that time, Dennis Bounds, went to KSTP and is now the main anchor at the NBC affiliate here in Seattle. Interesting to note how computer graphics and radar have changed the way the weather is presented. The temp maps were done by hand.
This was a totally different newscast before Paul Magers joined them. Was "NewsCenter" a brand mandated by NBC at the time? It seems like it was used on so many NBC O&O's and affiliates alike in the 70s/early 80s.

Whoa! That is the only news clip I've ever seen on the only real murder case in New Ulm in modern history (up until that time).

So someone taped this back in 1981, and kept the tape for 25 years. Wow.

For O&O's yeah, not so much affiliates. My area's NBC affiliate, WAVY-TV, used the (rather silly, in hindsight) name "Area 10 Eyewitness News"
