The extremely strong magnetic field induces current in the metal can to oppose the field, and this makes the can fall slowly. It does not float because the can is not superconductive, so there is friction from the moving electrons. Try this with some Yttrium-Barium-copper oxide, and it will indeed float.

Cool, but there is a much easier, and just as dramatic war to show this principle without resorting to "the worlds biggest magnet". All you need is a very strong magnet(like a rare earth magnet) of a fairly small size. Now get a copper pipe that is just slightly bigger than the magnet. The magnet should be able to fall through without touching the sides of the copper tube (except for occasional bump). Drop the magnet through and it will fall in slow motion. The more powerful the mag the slower.
what a load of rubbish. The can is in a very strong magnetic field. Since the can is made of aluminium, when the can moves, eddie currents are induced in the aluminium (induced magnetism) which oppose the magnetic fields flux in the opposite direction to the cans fall. The results are a slow falling can. Do it in an MRI and see for yourself if you have friends who can get access to one.
What i said was not "a load of rubbish" i drink half the can and place it on it's side and it stays balanced on an angle. I was mistaken, i thought that it was the same method. i prefer my own method its simple and looks about as good. i wouldn't bother getting a magnet.
I did not make the magnet. It is the worlds strongest DC magnet located at the National High Magnet Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, FL. The magnet reaches a field of 45 Tesla.
Before you downvote, look at the science:

how did you make the magnet?

its not a magnet :)
i can tell you how to do it
drink half the can
then balance it at an angle on a flat surface
then carefully slowly remove your hand
it should stay balanced
the luiquid inside equals
do it to your m8s i do and it impresses every time!
:D hope i helped!

fair enough. I thought you said that that's what this dude is doing in the vid. nuff said.

I assure you the slow falling nature of the aluminum can is in fact because a physical phenomena known as Eddie currents.
