@Kicakicakica That's what black and white, good hair and makeup and good lighting can do. In the 1997 version, they made her look more child like, less put together and more carefree.
this lolita's alot sweeter and more likable than the 1997 lolita she just comes off as sort of a brat,i mean i get that shes rebellious, but it was to the point where ppl didnt like her
I thought Dominique did a better job. Sue looked much older and acted like a much more grown-up kid which I thought kinda removed some of the shock factor. Sue looks way older than she is-think it's partly the over styled hair.
The girl playing Lolita in the '97 version is bland with all the '90's affectations that you would never see in a girl from the 1940's. The practiced Angelina Jolie sleepy eyed sexiness and all knowing smarminess that makes the current crop on teen aged girls insufferable... Like, ummm.. OK?
The movie was controversial. The idea of an old man being obsessed with a child bothered people. You shouldn't hate the movie over something that none of the writers had control over. The best they could do was let us use our imagination as to what they did.
In 1954, a 16 year-old girl babysitting a 5 year-old boy waited until grandmother left the house, then sexually abused the boy, at one point actually sitting on his face without panties...the grandmother came back unexpectedly and beat the .... out of her...the police were NOT called because the family feared a scandal...Incidentally, the girl was beautiful and grew up to be a stunning model....The point is, women are EXACTLY like men when it comes to getting what they want, only more devious.
lol i forgot i watched this movie. that comment seemed so long ago. anyway i think what i was saying was that in this one it was more in the vain of innuendo unlike the remake we saw lolita do all the sexual stuff.
oh, i see what you mean.. and i do agree, but on the other hand an over sexualised child could be creepy than the audience being forced to think about what shes saying, rather than just watching it... but its all about tastes really i suppose.. and i guess the newer one could get away with much more overtly sexual stuff, plus modern audiences are more obsessed with sex and easily distracted if its not as in your face... omg i went around the houses a bit there, but i hope you get what i mean :D
Except that she's blonde, but yes, she really fits for this role. She is adorable and yet a bit vulgar. I love her laugh, and I think the man that plays H.H. is better than Jeremy Irons, 'cause in the book they put him like really attractive and cynical.
But I think the Humbert in this movie is better, because he's kind of creepy and if you've read the book, you don't want to symphatize with him. That's what happens in Jeremy Irons' case.
I think the version from 1997 follows the book much better, and Dominique Swain is more convincing as Lolita, although none of them are 12 years old, but I guess they couldn't have such a young girl to play the part. That ruins a bit, because now you just have an elderly man who simply falls in love with a young girl - not like a childish, pubescent one.
She seems a bit too mature for this role. Besides, the book describes Lolita as having reddish brown hair and tan skin. She is blonde and dresses like she's 30.
Yeah... sadly it's plainly obvious that he is lying xD That's what irritated me about the book. Humbert was writing IT to show that he hadn't done any thing wrong, so of course he would say things like that. Heehee, love the 'LOL-ita' xD

I hate how this movie is so clean.
Was this honestly considered controversial back in the day??
I mean, i don't think I've even seen them kiss, this far into the movie. It's all just insinuations and bullshit.
If the people who saw this movie when it first came out, saw the remake, and how blunt it was, they'd probably shit themselves silly.

I've read the book, and I think the 1997 film is far more accurate than this one.
She's too mature, too old, and he's conveyed as just being creepy. Irons really makes you believe the role of Humbert...
this is just kind of flat.

@papadontpreach123 I agree, I don't find this movie hard to watch or controversial at all because Lolita seems to be a woman.

They decided not to show the part where he says " I was not even her first lover" Also I thick Dominque swain is a better Lolita.

No, if you're referring to the 1997 film, they clearly slept together, being that she says "I hurt inside" in the car after they leave the hotel.
