Globalization means poverty for increasing numbers as wealth and power are concentrated in the hands of fewer people. And of course, to separate economics from psychology and culture (ie individualism) is blind. The world is on an irreversible path to globalization in my opinion, and therefor rural Canada is screwed.
Rural economies typically rely upon the sale of commodities from the surrounding area, and government money be it welfare, social security for seniors, schools or hospitals etc. The degree of success a rural economy enjoys is dependent on the degree to which inflows of money are spent or invested in the local economy. This asks people to see past their immediate interests, and therefor typically fails.
