I do hope Ali is right about the South-to-North links helping to foster elements of Democracy in the U.S, so far ''Occupy'' isn't anywhere near the sort of critical mass it would need to achieve its aims.
Another wrong does not make a right. But 911, as terrible as it was, was an effect, not a cause. The cause for the "blowback" of 911 began with the partition beneficial to the west of middle east post ww1. And the US joined into the machinations of propping up bloody dictators in middle east post ww2. From overthrow of Iran's true democracy in 1953 by US/UK, hiring Sadam to assassinate the president of Iraq's democracy, etc. gulf war one, US bases next to Mecca, led to 93' fail, then 911.
Tariq Ali, one of our great minds in the past 30 years, makes a crucial point. In so many words Ali sees how the world was tricked that globalization would promote human rights on the world. On the contrary it has decreased rights via exploitive capitalism. You can't fight to make rights laws(as Ali also points out as crucial-human rights must be made law in countries) when laissez faire capitalism forces workers into misery sapping them of their strength to fight for rights to laws.
A state must grant temporary privelidges for some citizens in order to maintain political stability but, when the need arises, must take away these privelidges. To say that all have the "right" to food, housing etc. would thwart the law of evolution, thus condemning the future of humanity to wretched degeneracy. Niceness, as a state policy, is self annihilation.
Democracy by force is nothing but a trojan horse. What comes out of that "gift" is expoitive capitalism. Even the current situation of the disputed election in Ivory Coast to be enforced by military intervention, even by sister African countries is something to be wary of. What should be done in Ivory Coast is continued negotions and even another election to be held if all else fails. Force is never the answer unless in defense. Ironic to say the least but the truth of the matter.
@smilingasteroid There are other videos that go into more detail. One is titled:"Talk - Michael Parenti - The U.S. War on Yugoslavia". Tariq is great but Dr. Parenti goes into more detail about the post US imperialism exploitation, destruction and death for the 1%. The upload was from talkingstick tv. I recommend subscribing to that You tube channel. Parenti is special because and also talks in a like-able w class nyc accent. He's a scholar for the people like Ali.
Damn this guy is great, we hate great people in Pakistan, we hated our first Nobel Prize winner because he was a Ahmadi, and I have never heard of this man and that's assuming its down to him being an Atheist.. yet idiots like Zaid Hamid are capturing the minds of young people..what ignorant society..
a world empire is in the making. USA ans USSR tried it with weapons they both failed. Now China is trying to do the same with economy... let's watch and see if they will be able to pull it of. I belive they're going to fail as well.
Something is missing, something else is needed to make a truly world empire
All these conversation for an APOLOGY for the COLONIAL & OCCUPYING nature of the Western Rulers and their desire to supply SPICES, COFFEE, OIL and even MORALS from the EAST to the WEST?
Why not tell the truth- that you the West LACK all these essentials of life & that thee decided to steal it b/c t is CHEAPER than paying accurate price for it? Unlike how India, Africa etc pay for YOUR over-priced Computers, Cars, Trinkets? ? under COMPULSION & Fear of US Nuclear Bomb?
Latin American revolutions are giving way to the rest of the world. So no one order is lifetime. I am Optimistic about Global order revival. I know this is a one world, but not a system. Differences should be handeld with harmoneous idea. Thanks
Your absolutely right. Tariq is to my mind utterly resolute. His meticulous disarticulation of neoliberal lies is (as always) inspiring. Pakistan's finest export to the UK.
Tariq is also one of the few 1968 icons who has stayed true to himself ... unlike many of the scumbags in the Blair/Brown cabinet and unlike phoneys like Cohn-Bendit and Fischer who were among the first to advocate (and carry out!) the bombing of Yugoslavia. I wish Tariq's speech could be heard by a much wider audience.
@LewisBeyman How prescient you are my friend. You wrote this comment 3 years ago. And now look at the meteoric growth of the occupy wall street and 99% against the 1%. However we cannot overlook how much the Arab spring has significantly influenced the current street protests in the US today. You are a veritable oracle. Our hats off to you and others who have felt, like me, the same would happen here in the US. When authority start killing, cops&g.i.'s will fight for protestors=revolution
