  • This makes me cry...

  • Nice simple (for Ted Greene) take on a Christmas classic. 'Miss ya, Ted.

  • im literally crying.... amazing tone, i would give my left nut just to have that tone!

  • Anyone that would dislike this is not capable of appreciating harmony and true artistry.

  • @KABRIS1 Ted amazes me... You are so so right about appreciation and Listening ...the ability to listen is a ever evolving learning trait... Ted keeps getting better & better the older we get ... Cheers ...you have been listening very well ...Cool and bravo

    Dave

    Alberta

  • beautiful

  • Joe Pass

  • I can't comprehend people who would dislike any videos of Ted. What an incredible musician who was so generous with his incredible knowledge.

  • i feel honored to share the same birthday as mr. greene

  • DIVINATION..........!

  • 1:53

tabs for that??? must learn to play this

  • @itwasntmexb Tabs? Go learn to read music son.

  • Didn't know Riff Raff played guitar :P No seriously, Ted Green was/is the shit. Joe Pass, Lenny Breau, and Ted Greene are all having a jam session right now in that great gig in the sky.

  • Is that an Guild DE50?

  • Dang that is a cool guitar

  • @powersoftritone the Guild? if so, shh. don\t tell people.

  • he looks like Mr Trevor Ochmonek from ALF

  • A guitar player layed one of his chord books on me back in 1976. And afterwards I

heard a record of him playing. I was amazed at his ability now as then. Sounded like a computer was playing. Just too much. Kinda like the time I started reading Buckminster Fuller's book > Synergy<.got to page 6... and... well... am still thinking about it decades later. I love good music and play jazz on guitar but, like with Bucky, something else was happening with this man, something else.

  • I've been listening to rock, classical, jazz guitar for the last 20 years but didn't know who this giant was up to this year. He was in my blind spot so to speak...*sighs* Part of it is surely my fault but talking about the bullshitness of the music monkey industry. It's a real shame that even among musicians Ace Frehley is more famous than he.

  • Thrill me EVERY TIME YOU SEE THIS VIDEO! ((TED WAS AND IS FANTASTIC)

  • today is the first time I saw Ted play. his "chord chemistry" book was my guitar bible-thanks for posting these vids!!!

  • I highly recommend his books...single note soloing 1 and 2 they really had a positive influence on my guitar.

  • Celestial. R.I.P. Mr Greene.

  • amazing performance

the links dont work though :(

  • what is the model and year of that guild?

  • Lead sheets forbidden - check links

    Awesome - thanks for sharing

  • This is beautiful.

  • Nice!

  • anyone know the tuning? open something

  • omg ty<l

  • extraordinary

  • HA love the reverence his guitar case gets!

  • he's remarable guitar player ever but I'm wondering why I hardly find any his album at store?????

  • its not the room to play music in because all the guitars on the walls resonate to much,, But he is juts having,,,right

  • 8:03!

    Beautiful harmonizations

  • It's sad this only has 95,000 views. Genius doesn't get the attention it deserves.

  • I'm dreaming,

Bach has come back as guitar player. He just loves where Western Harmony has evolved to since he's been gone. He takes it all in, and begins to trail-blaze through these new sonorties with his own unique paths.

That is how I feel about Ted Greene

  • @jasman699 Play Bach's F major Invention (no 8) harmonically and you will be surprised at the similarities in certain sequential progressions, and discover I‘ll see it hasn’t evolved that much. Like wise for certain Beethoven sonatas.

Don't get me wrong Ted Greene is an amazing player and I'm not slating him, but people have this idea that before the 20th century no one played a 11th 13th or 9th chord.

  • Lol That summer shirt on a Christmas jazz song..Just seems weird.

  • @TheBeatlesCom I'm from Australia so it seems perfectly normal! Love his playing though, absolutely stunning!!

  • I think the reason why he always sound "so good" aside from his great voicing is because of the unique timbre produced by his fingers and that differs him from another guitarist.

And just my guess that unique timbre is somehow related to your heart/soul or whatever.

  • skip the first 2 and a half mins, nothing happens but guitar tuning....

  • It's that good it brings tears to your eyes

  • no sabia q encias sangrantes murphy tocara la guitarra

i didn't know bleeding gums murphy played the guitar

  • I find Ted Greene is a better teacher than he is a player. His ideas do not seem cohesive and he seems like he's hesitating when he should be focusing on making a musical statement instead of a disjointed one. I have both of Ted Greene's books on chord voicings and they're great, but as a player, I find him quite clumsy and inconsistent.

  • @bluemonk82 hesitation or nervous ticks, I find he's an exceptional player. maybe you need someone to guide you through the performance if you think it's disjointed, feel it breath, it's organic.

  • @bluemonk82 I can see how one might see it that way. I honestly think Ted was feeling the music and I feel like Ted lived every note he played and let every note live and breath. A great player for sure with a wealth of information.

  • @bluemonk82 agreed, although he does have some awesome performances I don't believe he is the end all of jazz guitar. great instruction though and surely more knowledge of the instrument than I will ever have.but one of the curses about being a great player is being held to the same standard as every other great play of which there are many.

  • @bluemonk82 wow..............

  • @bluemonk82 I know what you mean, but I think it's the visual distractions of his body movements. He seems to have some need to move around and it doesn't match the music. If you don't look at him but just listen, it's a whole different thing.

  • lovely... he is fantastic... question: is he playing his own guitars? It appears he has many and has a certain appreciation of Guild guitars...

  • he must be the greatest

    hes in his own league

  • wow - am i glad i have ears and a brain right now - beautiful.

  • This is the best version I have ever heard of this song. He's plays chords I could never think of playing. What a unknown genius!

  • I think you all mistake this vast knowledge of chords for what is in reality an understanding of music that most people will never begin to achieve...i guess yes he does understand chords really really well but I see it as more of a byproduct of his overall musical knowledge and familiarity with the instrument....regardless fantastic player really really incredible....i must bow

  • yes. It's not even so much the chords, but how to use them. That's the trick....years of studying

  • can you answer something for me? when he plays a song like this, is he just coming up with a lot of the changes on the spot? or has he figured it all out before?

  • @lukeee89 from what i've read, most of what he played was improvised. Of course, he had an idea of the structure of the song prior to playing, but he mostly came up with ideas on the spot.

  • @milkear yeah that's what i thought. simply amazing.

  • these darn $3000 guitars!

  • You'd be amazed to hear a Harmony H44 with flat wounds play jazz..it's becoming, out of 15 guitars I own, my faavorite guitar to play jazz on...somehthng about the ease, and clarity, and weight...and I ahve a 1940 L5 and a 52' Les Paul, which are both set up with flat wounds, and an Eastman...and still the H44 is my favorite guitar to play.

  • Wow--watching this clip for 100th or so time--words fail me. Thanks so much for posting this clip--it's just plain brilliant.

  • where can I find the sheet music for this?

  • man I would give my left nut to be able to play that!

  • sometimes you see rare people that really didnt have enough time to reach out an touch the hearts of enough people. his rendition of hark the herald brings nothing less then musical beauty mixed with his flawless ability to create a musical wonder that, if used, would have achieved more world piece then we could cope with. instead we fight violence with violence in our ignorance of such musical wonder.

  • @sixstringer82 Hell, I'd give 'em both...

  • @sixstringer82 is that all you'd give up to play like that???

  • @sixstringer82 i might even give both nuts

  • been admiring this for a long time now....does the link to the sheet music work for anyone? please help thank you

  • This is still the best guitar arrangement of any song I've eve heard...

  • WOW.

  • What a sweet sound he Had!!

Amazing. I really love what he played.

  • What a beautiful spirit this man had!Thank you Ted,for your playing, for all your books, and all your guidance, and for sharing all of your special gifts with all of us.

  • don't think i've ever heard him before-he's really great

  • Ted lives.

  • Amazing. Pure talent. I can't think of anyone with this knowledge of chords and this ability to make the guitar a solo instrument in jazz. Actually, it is disturbing.

  • well there is joe pass. but ya very few people reach this status.

  • You cant be serious, heres a few for ya, Lenny Breau,Joe Pass,Martin Taylor,Tommy Emanuel,Doyle Dykes.....

  • I know what you mean, those are top players, and some of my favorites (MT, JP and LB are beyond words...). I was referring to his knowledge of chords alone. But it's IMHO

  • how about charlie christian, the man who did it first.

  • @fishytank1land Not quite on the same level as Ted Greene though, he broke new ground but this is on the 101st floor.

  • @androidguitar then you need to see joe pass, chet atkins, les paul, and many others :)

  • @NegoAlelas: Those are absolute, undisputed masters, far more popular that Ted was. Today we also have Martin Taylor, and the like. But it's my personal opinion, it's just that.

  • @androidguitar With all due respect to you and to Ted, I must say that there's only one other player that I feel had that knowledge of chords and ability to play solo jazz guitar, and that was Joe Pass. Both Ted and Joe were exquisite players. A cut above the rest.

  • BÉLO BÉLO BÉLO ! BRAVISSIMO

  • amazing guitarist!

  • Hello to all of you pickers out there! Although this man and I were neighborhood pals off and on while I was in SoCal, in reality it was for way too short of a time. What you are witnessing here is a man whose passion was the sheer joy only music can provide, and I can personally guarantee each and every one of you and those to come that this is a recording of the type of spiritual experience that comes only on special occasions when everything is right, as it was here. This is beyond priceless!

  • fabulous .. the counterpoint in Hark is wonderful .. thanks for posting this clip

  • This is amazing :) So many guitarrrs!

  • wow...those beautiful voicings and the way he just slips right into that key change..what a genius

  • AMAZING!!!

  • has anybody transcribed this or anything similar to it?

  • Howard Morgen.

  • I wish there were more musicians that would take music as far as Ted did.

  • Oh yeah.

  • guy in the front is like "omg i dont wanna let go... i wanna keep the case" 5/5

  • His tone was godly. It sounded like a harp or a piano in parts.

  • I love when I present his books to a guitar teacher they say anything but that ! lol but in a well respected way .

  • great playing!

  • skip ahead numb nuts

  • That was cruel, if true. Actually Mr. Greene had zero stage presence and I doubt he cared about that one way or the other. That's the main reason a guy as good as he was never became as famous as the Pauls and Atkins and Emmanuels of the world. Ted Greene was, is and always will be my favorite guitar player.

  • Most brilliant people have trouble communicating at all. In his case, the music spoke loud enough to the point where he didn't even need to say a word. My favorite solo guitar player as well, a real genius.

  • Ted,You were one of my teacher Alan DeMause's

favorites and you are dearly missed. Thanks for everything. Musikologist

  • veramente fantastico!

  • aaahhh.

  • nice song:)

  • I think you have to listen to Ted's work to understand the genius. To say he is a sound technician is like saying that Einstein is just another physicist. One you listen in depth to his understanding of harmony and phrasing you will fully appreciate him. too bad he has passed and can't give use the emjoyment of hearing more. Take care Ted . . .

  • one word, amazing!!!

  • lexovirus wrote; "He's more to sound engineering than guitar playing." What does that even mean? Well, at least you got the "Beautiful song" part right.

  • Beautiful song! From what I can tell, he's more to sound engineering than guitar playing.

  • Ted Played his way and was like no one else . Ted was such a master he was never showing off he truly played what he heard in his head and was a real humble guy.I love how he can just change the key at the drop of a hat.

  • Masterful. So inspiring to see this, thanks for posting.

  • What harmonies and that ending was the topping on the cake!

  • Ahh! The person whom Eric Johnson got his chord techniques from.

  • beautiful song..

  • A master of harmony.

This is what it's all about.

  • I don't know who is arguing about this. It's nice to listen to and nice for this time of year. Ted was great.

  • I really like the size dimensions of Ted's Guild. Does anyone know the exact model of it.

  • Looks like a Guild X-170 Manhattan...

  • It's got Duane Eddy's signature on the pickguard, which suggests that it's a Guild Duane Eddy model. DE-400, I think, was the model number.

  • I don't know whats more fascinating?

the music, the tweekshow playing it, or all you anal fuck tugs aguing over stupid shit!

  • wonderful....

  • The man applauding that somebody thought was Joe Pass is photographer Bob Barry. The man next to him who helps Ted with his guitar case in the beginning, is guitarist John Pisano, who hosts the seminars at California Vintage Guitar where this was taped. John played with Joe Pass for many years. Ted was basically very shy so there may be a touch of nervousness but the shaking of his hands was deliberate- it was how he acheived his legendary vibrato. Merry Christmas everyone!

  • Beautiful! Thanks for uploading this.

I wish people would stop arguing with youtube comments. Some people expect useful information when they get on youtube. Having to read through arguments about tone and taste is a drag and is useless to everyone except the two people arguing.

  • ... Sounds good to me.

  • One must try avoid using big words for the sake of making an impression, one could easily get confused and only contradict oneself.

  • One must try avoid using big words for the sake of making an impression, one could easily get confused and only contradict oneself.

  • If your version doesn't matter why do you think you opinion matters? If you even have a version, which from the sounds of it you don't, since you fail to demonstrate basic chord knowledge from a theoretical stand point. It's not a challenge, but an opportunity to give an example of now what is obvious as your meaningless opinion.

Obviousely Ted is in the middle of doing a clinic, and had many choices, and felt like this one was most appropriate one at the time.

  • Stratojet, please enlighten us with your version of this tune won't you? this way we can respect your opinion,

  • My version does not really matter. If my girlfriend watches this video, then she would make the same comments I made. To perform this tune the way you challenge me would just be giving in an irrelevant performance contest. Music is not acrobaty. Non-musicians are the true judges and final consumers of any musical performance. Thanks for your thoughts.

  • yes yes yes. very true.

...by the way, this video is soooo beautiful...

  • That's malarkey. Non-musicians are not the true judges (although they are the largest group of consumers). You can tell this lack of good musical judgment by looking at the disparity between the sales of any Britney Spears CD and, say, any Johnny Smith CD. The average non-musician music consumer has uninformed, idiotic tastes in music. They don't understand music and thus slip to the lowest common denominator.

  • As I said, Mr Green is a fantastic player. Very melodic; at least we do recognize the song. I much prefer when he keeps the harmony simpler. As for music rated by musicians only, we have to be careful. Some form of so-called fusion Jazz or Free jazz, even if difficult to play has more to do with gunslinger performance than misicianship.

  • oh my. I now have no thoughts. Thank you for being the cloud in the silver lining.

  • Nice harmonies but a bit overdone. Sometimes keeping it simpler sounds better. Like his second piece on this video. Guitar players always tend to forget that they do not always play for a guitar player's audience. So, their arrangements always tend to be too busy.

Now about tone: I agree that Scolfield is the master of Ugly Horrible sound. A lot of Jazz guitarist don't pay attention to their tone and it makes it as bland as watching a Toyota Corolla.

  • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and some people just can't see very well. This was filmed in a guitar store and was probably a clinic. This wasn't in a supper club for people who are clueless to the sublteties of Mr. Greenes chordal palate.

  • Tone is a matter of taste. Some prefer the bite of a tele as played by a Gatlin or Collins (in another posted video in Mr. Greenes hands the tele spoke a lot gentler). I like the "jazz" tone for ballads like this (muted, highs rolled off).

Thank you poster for this cool bit of history.

  • Ted was [and is] a guitar god. I take lessons from a good friend of Ted's, and every time Ted's name comes up, I get misty thinking about him. Ted's genius is that powerful.

  • The sheet music link won't work for me. Will you please send me the sheets.

  • What a beautiful soul! Despite his shaking hands (nerves?) he plays with such grace. I really wish he were still with us so he could feel how much he means to so many guitarists and lovers of music. I hope he was happy until the end; I hope he felt appreciated and loved.

  • Ted's soul was so strong and came through so beautifully. I think he couldve played a shoe string on a shovel and made you cry.

  • I do miss Ted So. He was beautiful as his beautiful was and is.

  • Very inspiring.... and for those of us who have studied Ted's books, how wonderful to "get to know Ted better" through these YouTube postings! -Don in Ontario, Canada

  • How people can judge the tone of a musician from a bad quality tape like this!

  • lol relax i have huge respect for this man. He has the brain of a damn rocket scientist and has influenced and taught many great guitarist's through his books. Im jst sayin i dnt like his tone.

  • how long does this video take to load? grrrrr

  • wow, amazing. this guy is fascinating to me and I'm usually into shred stuff

  • He manages to make some pretty difficult voicings so so natural and flowing without calling attention the guitar itself and its idiosyncrasies. It's so good to hear pure harmony and melody together played with such ability.

  • Ted I miss you so. Loseing you has hurt me so. Just a reminder of our own Moralities.

  • Thanks for posting this. He was truly a harmonic genius. It is difficult to find any video of him anywhere. As for people like DazedNConfused87 who "hate his tone" First let me say that his username is an indication of his ignorance. It is an obvious reference to a Led Zeppelin song. Let's analyze this brilliant piece of...work, shall we? Ok, we have a bass ostinato in the key of E which simply repeats ad-nauseam. Then a dirty distorted guitar enters. Yeah, nice tone.

  • um... i love ted greene and his harmonies. he is probably the best guitarist that ever lived. but honestly, how can you judge someone off of their name? and how can u judge a band like led zeppelin on the simpleness of their music? why do people like you beleive that complicated music = good music?! there is tons of, so you say, bass lines that "simply repeat" that are utterly awesome! good music sounds good! good music is not necessarily complicated! open your mind a bit!

  • Then we have the vocals come in which sound as if someone were shot with a poisoned arrow. One assumes dart frogs were in some way involved. So from this we can only assume that DazedNConfused87 would like to hear Ted Greene play Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas on a Les Paul through a Marshall stack. I guess that would be his idea of a good guitar tone. My guess is that not only is DazedNConfused his username, it is also his mental state!

  • fucking good comment mate. i'm fed up of fucking retarded people making stupid comments about music. they nearly always are exclusive rock fans that think drugs are more important in music than the notes being played and all think led zepplin are the greatest musicians ever. they also seem to think that they are some how unique in their opinions. your comment made me very happy.

  • Then we have sourgruel who states "I think it would be easyer to use a zither".

It's obvious that anyone who can invent their own spelling for "easier" is a genius. This imbecile has neither the sensitivity nor the sophistication to appreciate the subtle nuances and advanced harmony that Ted Greene spent his life trying to teach the rest of us lesser gifted devotees. I think charliejung said it best and much more succinct than I. SHUT UP!

  • When is he finally going to sing?? xD

I think it would be easyer to use a zither. He looks pretty nervous, and it bothers the viewer...

  • shut up!!

  • The question here is not to be impressed but be TOUCHED , this guy was a GENIUS and a great human being as well, and this is clear in his music, but it is crucial to be vibrating in the same realm he is vibrating.Listening without any expectations might help...

  • wow, i have to say im not that impressed...i thought this guy was supposed to be fantastic. I have a book by him, lol. Maybe this song just isnt showing off his skill very well....

  • Top man for posting this -- links for sheet music don't work though

  • amazing polytonal harmony

  • Your links for the sheet music do not work.

  • hate his tone

  • "hate his tone"

yea well you suck my balls

  • That's enough to bring a tear to your eye........

  • Thanks for posting this MrJazzGuitar01.There is so little left of ted other than his books and his one and only cd.I am a newbie to all that is ted.

  • I don't care that its not christmas. good god, this man is a legend.

  • A true musician playing for the right reasons.

  • Holy shit i still think that's some of the most beautiful, incredible music i've ever heard, that bit on the refrain at the end where he plays the F/A - Eb/G - F/G - G/A.... in whatever detuned key it's supposed to be, WOWOWOW. heavy.

  • That is SO SO SO Beautiful!
