This was a man who used to get drunk and beat his wife up in front of his small children. He also went on tour just to be able to be with his mistress. No, Tommy Cooper wasn´t just a lovely man, as most people here seems to think.
Apparently, Tommy was like this in real life (whatever that is) in as much as he gormed about and played practical jokes, wound uppity people up and generally larked about. He also drank like a Pope. He died a paradoxical death yet he remains dear to the hearts of all eccentrics. An archetypal Englishman.
Some1 I know said when he went to see him he just stood infront of a little gate on the stage telling jokes and everybody was wondering what the gate was for cos he never mentioned it all way through the performance and at the end he just walked through the gate and off the stage laughing! Absolutley different class!
ex. First, u secretly already have a ball in 1 hand (you're squeezing it very hard - nobody notices), u take 2 balls in the same hand (becomes 3), squeeze them, put them in your friends hand, & tell them to hold it tight.
Then u take the ball on the table and u make it LOOK as if you're putting it in your left, but you're not. It's still in your right. Then u pretend to do some magic, the other guy opens his hand, and it looks like the ball "magically" got there.
parkinson asks him to do a straight trick and he gets about hundred jokes too! this is one of my fave bits of TC coz it is really classy close-up magic (although not too difficult that anybody couldn't have done it, with a little practise.)done as straight as the funniest man in the world could do...
"have you got one of my balls?" - he even gets in a rare blue joke! on national TV! in the 70's!
so what if he's getting slow, getting old, getting drunk. i love it. there will never be another!!
I heard that he was doing a live show. The lights went down and a voice announced, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr Tommy Cooper.' Then they heard Tommy sighing and making various noises. Then steps could be heard coming down stairs. By now the audience was in hysterics, and he hadn't even appeared on the stage. The word genius doesn't cover this great man.
bloody great showman i'm so glad i missed his final performance that way i can remember him at his best. I do wish there more Tommy Coopers in this world
Tommy Cooper - this interview is why I like him so much, a brilliant magician and yet so crazy. The Parkinson show is where you go to be "yourself", so Tommy took his fez off and carried on being the same - that was as close to himself as he would go on tv...
A true comic genius. A star among a comedy breed so missed today.
Over twenty years the counrty has lost genuine funny people. Thank God they survive on youtube. Thanks fior posting. An interview with Keneth Williams is fantastic.
There was only one, a friend of mine was at the fatefull show where he died, he knew him, Tommy gave him a gift one Christmas, a box of matches.. on the outside it had a fez, a cane and top hat etc, on the inside of the box it said STOLEN FROM TOMMY COOPER. even a box of his matches could make us laugh.
now he makes us cry, because he is gone, gone but never forgotten.
What a great man! Once went to see him at The Golden Garter in Manchester. He stood behind the stage curtain laughing, and by the time he first appeared the whole audience was laughing - and he hadn't even said a word.
i don't think in all my life I've ever met anyone who didn't love Tommy Cooper, he was the only man ever who could tell the most stupid jokes and make you laugh, my favourite TC joke, "I walked into a bar last night, knocked me flat on my back, it was an iron one" so stupid, but at the same time, so funny
lol, the french version is priceless

The second part to the horse joke that tommy sometimes said was " it came in so late it had to tiptoe back to the stables" hahaha

Such a simple trick but the smoothness of the slight-of-hand is phenomenal. What a legend. And unbelievably funny too

I have a weakness for the humour of Tommy Cooper. Stupid but in some strange way brilliant.
