It is tuff to see how quick Jon dismisses the Alabama's caller insight which cut straight to the bone of the deceptions and instead pissed rght over the schmuck who rightfully believes in a wider collusion behind closed doors. Hicks, Stanhope, and Carlin would have recognized the comment for what it was.
I think what happened to Miller happened to a lot of people after 911. America split into left and right. The Bush administration didn't help either they drove the wedge deeper between Americans for political gain. Dennis just fell of the wrong side. He fell way off the wrong side.
U know, it's funny. If you watch from 4:30, the caller asks a question which Dennis IMMEDIATELY shoots down (rather insultingly) and Jon likewise disagrees with BUT , BUT , I MEAN , BUT THEN at 5:33 , Dennis makes a point which supports the caller's argument. Watch it and think. Dennis basically inadvertently agrees with the caller. Why was Jon's show cancelled if so many people would like his show??????
jon had a point on the "numbing of america". tool wrote a song on that too by the way, stinkfist. honestly though, this caller was very inciteful...so much so.
He might be really Conservative but I'm depressed when peop use that to say that he is no longer funny. We may disagree w/ him but I def think he's still a worthwhile comedian :-)
You make a good point, but once a comedian stops calling it down the middle, or becomes uber political he/she totally loses me. Jon Stewart makes jokes about both sides, sure it was more about the Republicans from 2000-2009 but come on, they had ALL the power. David Letterman I think calls it down the middle too, I mean, he made fun of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, how is that not calling it down the middle?
I prefer Moderates too, but Dennis' righty stance on the war shouldn't negate the fact that he still has that reference-loaded, fast-paced jibe to his still highly enjoyable stand-up :)
It's just weird comparing his stuff from the SNL and Dennis Miller Show to what he is doing now. I have noticed that he has shifted a little closer to the middle as of late. But who in their right mind hasn't? I saw one of his comedy specials on HBO right when Bush took office and he unloaded a lot of negative on Bill Clinton despite the great place our country was in and I have yet to hear him to do the same to Bush especially considering where our country has gone. And seeing him on Oreilly.
Well if you listen to his Radio show, he def is still in support of the Iraq War, but whenever he supports Bush's wartime policies, I'll hear him acknowledge that Bush isn't exactly smart (his whole Bush is a Checkers player, Kerry plays Chess analogy), and can be too emotional on religious subjects and w/ affrimative action. Def he's still rightwing and I would like to see more balance from him, but that doesn't negate his keen mind and pointed observations :-)
Keen mind hasn't changed, but pointed in the wrong direction in comparison to the past. I'm all for him supporting the troops, but for anyone not to acknowledge that this war only made things worse especially in any form of news media, is just not doing their job. The whole middle east became even more unstable and who knew that was possible. Having Saddaam there, as bad as he was, kept a sort of balance to that region of the world. Now we're worried about Iran and who knows what.
It certainly wasn't because it was too intelligent for us dumb Americans. Stewart's act has improved dramatically since the early 90s. He's a much more polished performer today than he was back then.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Miller saw Stewart's potentional even then. He also was responsible for Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, and several other young talents getting their start. I just wish Stewart hadn't turned into a douchebag.
The guy from Alabama was prescient, and no one really talked about stuff like the dumbing down the American people. Little did they know 14 year years ago, that the intelligence was at the peak, and now sucks.
and the caller from alabama was the only one with an inteligent insightful comments , that NO ONE SEES.. are you seeing it now / cause i happening and working ...
it's rediculous that some people would dumb down. football players end up driving cabs. nerds who get beat up are the ones who later get to be jon stewart.
i saw a biography on him and he was a little more on the "underdog" side. when i said "nerd" i meant it in the widest possible sense.
but that's besides the point. what really bothers me is that people seem eagar to dumb down because of some arbitrary standard that sets a limit of inteligence in order to be socially accessable.
Sadly it is very true.
50 years of Dumbed-down 'education' has resulted in Lousy government being allowed to almost Ruin the USA!
